Cardi B and her sister Hennessy Carolina are facing a defamation lawsuit after the rapper posted a video on social media accusing a group of Long Island beachgoers of being racists.The video was taken on Sept. 6 at Smith Point Beach in Suffolk County, according to the plaintiffs' attorney. It shows Carolina and her girlfriend, Michelle Diaz, involved in an expletive-filled spat with three people who are supporters of President Donald Trump.Cardi B shared the video with her massive social media following and accused the group of being racists who attacked her sister and Diaz.Now, the people on the other end of the video are suing the rapper for defamation, claiming Cardi and company attacked them.Attorney John Ray, who represents the plaintiffs, said his clients were enjoying a beach day with their families when Carolina came running up the beach toward them.“Hennessy Carolina suddenly approached them, raging, spitting, insulting, assaulting, defaming and threatening them, all the while videotaping them, because one of them wore a MAGA hat,” Ray said in a statement. “Then Hennessy, Cardi B and celebrity model Michelle Diaz deviously edited the videotape and published the edited version all over social media, across the world for all to see, and maliciously falsely labeled these residents and their families as ‘N…s’ and as racists.”The video was posted by Cardi B several weeks ago during a heated social media war between the rapper and conservative media personality Candice Owens.In the caption she posted along with the video, Cardi B said her sister and Diaz were being harassed because they are “an Afro/Hispanic gay couple.”However, the beachgoers painted a different picture of the incident during a news conference Tuesday detailing the lawsuit.Peter and Pauline Caliendo, of Moriches, and Manuel Alarcon, of Middle Island, said Carolina got in their faces, cursed and threatened them repeatedly after they asked Diaz to move a vehicle that was blocking other cars.Peter Caliendo and Alarcon said the video affected their careers, and Pauline Caliendo said she has had to defend herself to her family and friends.While the Caliendos had a Trump flag on their beach tent and Alarcon had a Make America Great Again hat on, all three insisted they are not racist or homophobic and that the incident had nothing to do with the president or race.“Anyone who knows us knows we’re not racist or homophobes,” Peter Caliendo said.Police were called to the scene, according to Ray, but the women had left before officers arrived on the scene. A police report was filed, Alarcon said.The lawsuit alleges that the video was created and posted online in an attempt to advance their careers. Ray cited a civil rights law that prohibits the use of a person's image for commercial purposes without written permission."What they have done, they went to this beach where they never go, they went there to create a scene...to create a commercial profit. (AP) — The National Park Service says scientists are trying to determine the cause of death of an endangered whale calf that was found stranded on a beach on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.The young whale is considered to be “one of the rarest marine mammals” on earth, according to NPS.Biologists performed a necropsy on the North Atlantic right whale calf and took DNA samples Saturday.NPS at Cape Lookout National Seashore posted news of the whale’s death on its Facebook page.Right whales are critically endangered. The park service says only about 360 of the animals are still alive and about five or six calves are born each year. 661

(AP) — The spacecraft team that brought us close-ups of Pluto will ring in the new year by exploring an even more distant and mysterious world.NASA's New Horizons spacecraft will zip past the scrawny, icy object nicknamed Ultima Thule (TOO-lee) soon after the stroke of midnight.One billion miles beyond Pluto and an astounding 4 billion miles from Earth (1.6 billion kilometers and 6.4 billion kilometers), Ultima Thule will be the farthest world ever explored by humankind. That's what makes this deep-freeze target so enticing; it's a preserved relic dating all the way back to our solar system's origin 4.5 billion years ago. No spacecraft has visited anything so primitive."What could be more exciting than that?" said project scientist Hal Weaver of Johns Hopkins University, part of the New Horizons team.Lead scientist Alan Stern of Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, expects the New Year's encounter to be riskier and more difficult than the rendezvous with Pluto: The spacecraft is older, the target is smaller, the flyby is closer and the distance from us is greater.NEW HORIZONSNASA launched the spacecraft in 2006; it's about the size of a baby grand piano. It flew past Pluto in 2015, providing the first close-up views of the dwarf planet. With the wildly successful flyby behind them, mission planners won an extension from NASA and set their sights on a destination deep inside the Kuiper Belt. As distant as it is, Pluto is barely in the Kuiper Belt, the so-called Twilight Zone stretching beyond Neptune. Ultima Thule is in the Twilight Zone's heart.ULTIMA THULEThis Kuiper Belt object was discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2014. Officially known as 2014 MU69, it got the nickname Ultima Thule in an online vote. In classic and medieval literature, Thule was the most distant, northernmost place beyond the known world. When New Horizons first glimpsed the rocky iceball in August it was just a dot. Good close-up pictures should be available the day after the flyby.ARE WE THERE YET?New Horizons will make its closest approach in the wee hours of Jan. 1 — 12:33 a.m. EST. The spacecraft will zoom within 2,200 miles (3,500 kilometers) of Ultima Thule, its seven science instruments going full blast. The coast should be clear: Scientists have yet to find any rings or moons around it that could batter the spacecraft. New Horizons hurtles through space at 31,500 mph (50,700 kph), and even something as minuscule as a grain of rice could demolish it. "There's some danger and some suspense," Stern said at a fall meeting of astronomers. It will take about 10 hours to get confirmation that the spacecraft completed — and survived — the encounter.POSSIBLY TWINSScientists speculate Ultima Thule could be two objects closely orbiting one another. If a solo act, it's likely 20 miles (32 kilometers) long at most. Envision a baked potato. "Cucumber, whatever. Pick your favorite vegetable," said astronomer Carey Lisse of Johns Hopkins. It could even be two bodies connected by a neck. If twins, each could be 9 miles to 12 miles (15 kilometers to 20 kilometers) in diameter.MAPPING MISSONScientists will map Ultima Thule every possible way. They anticipate impact craters, possibly also pits and sinkholes, but its surface also could prove to be smooth. As for color, Ultima Thule should be darker than coal, burned by eons of cosmic rays, with a reddish hue. Nothing is certain, though, including its orbit, so big that it takes almost 300 of our Earth years to circle the sun. Scientists say they know just enough about the orbit to intercept it.COMPARING FLYBYSNew Horizons will get considerably closer to Ultima Thule than it did to Pluto: 2,220 miles versus 7,770 miles (3,500 kilometers vs. 12,500 kilometers). At the same time, Ultima Thule is 100 times smaller than Pluto and therefore harder to track, making everything more challenging. It took 4 ? hours, each way, for flight controllers at Johns Hopkins' Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, Maryland, to get a message to or from New Horizons at Pluto. Compare that with more than six hours at Ultima Thule.WHAT'S NEXTIt will take almost two years for New Horizons to beam back all its data on Ultima Thule. A flyby of an even more distant world could be in the offing in the 2020s, if NASA approves another mission extension and the spacecraft remains healthy. At the very least, the nuclear-powered New Horizons will continue to observe objects from afar, as it pushes deeper into the Kuiper Belt. There are countless objects out there, waiting to be explored. 4591

CAMDEN, N.J. – Across the river from Philadelphia sits the nearly 200-year-old city of Camden, New Jersey, at one time called “the most dangerous city in America.”“This city has been riddled with drugs,” said resident Mark Hansen.About 74,000 people live there. Seven years ago, amid a budget crisis and a spiking murder rate, the mayor and police chief, as well as local and state lawmakers and then-Governor Chris Christie, among others, joined together and disbanded the city’s police department.“We had 67 murders in 2012, which put the murder rate higher than some third world nations. So, a change had to come,” said Louis Cappelli, Jr., Camden County’s freeholder director, which is a job similar to a county commissioner.It’s a position Cappelli also held when the city police department ceased to exist and was replaced with a brand-new county police department.“We started with two main objectives,” Cappelli said. “Number one was to reduce the number of crime victims and number two is to make the residents of the city feel safe.”So, what happened to the city police officers? With the union dismantled, all of them -- from the chief on down -- had to reapply for their positions with the Camden County Police Department (CCPD).Not everyone got their job back, but Capt. Zsakhiem James did.“Couldn't see myself being a cop anywhere else,” he said. “This is my home.”However, the policing Capt. James knew then underwent a complete change. All the officers went through new training – focusing foremost on community policing and de-escalation, where the use of force becomes a last resort.“We stress interaction with people on a positive note. We reward that,” Capt. James said. “As opposed to just the traditional rewards for drug and gun arrests and solving violent crimes, we also reward officers for being integral parts of the community.”In the years since the changes, according to the CCPD, Camden’s crime rate fell. Since 2014, violent crime is down 36% and murders are down a whopping 72%.Not so fast said Camden County NAACP President Kevin Barfield.“Crime statistics throughout the state, in the United States, have went down over the years,” Barfield said. “So, can we truly contribute that to policing or a police model?”He is also concerned that the county police department lacks diversity in the ranks. Minorities make up about half the force and few are part of the higher ranks, in a city where 95% of the residents are either African American or Hispanic.“The problem is that the police department does not reflect the community that it serves,” Barfield said.That matters a lot, according to Dr. Nyeema Watson, head of civic engagement at Rutgers University’s Camden campus.“We still want to see broad swaths of diversity in all ways - because until there is a deep cultural shift, not only in policing but against systematic oppression of blacks, we're still going to have a fear and mistrust of the police,” Dr. Watson said.County officials say they are working to address that issue but add that the changes in policing in Camden shouldn’t be discounted. As for cities considering revamping their own police departments, each had some advice to offer.“Give the community the opportunity to vote,” said the NAACP’s Kevin Barfield. “When we change things, we need to make sure that those who are most vulnerable, that we still make sure that they have a voice.”For freeholder Louis Cappelli, what happened in Camden may not apply everywhere.“It's not one size fits all,” he said. “What we're doing here works well for us. So, you have to mold it and craft it to the needs and particular circumstances of your city.”Dr. Nyeema Watson cautions that change takes time and hard work.“This isn't going to happen overnight,” she said. “So, this is a long haul that communities will really have to engage in.”All are words born of experience from those who’ve been there. 3904
