DENVER, Colo. — Riding a bike marks a milestone for children. While it can provide a sense of freedom for some children, many kids with physical disabilities don't have the opportunity to enjoy the experience. That was almost the case for one young Denver boy, but thanks to a family friend, he can now pedal to his heart's content.Keeping up with Alex Braun, 5, on the playground can be a challenge. He moves around quickly.His mother, Amber Braun, calls Alex "a ray of sunshine.""He is so funny, he is our little comedian," she said. "We call him the mayor because he just loves to talk."He also loves to play, but unlike the rest of the kids, it takes him a little longer to reach his destination."I can't really run, just one foot at a time," Alex said.His mom said he can't feel much from his knees down.She said she'll never forget the two doctors who advised her to terminate her pregnancy after diagnosing her baby, Alex, with spina bifida. The birth defect is a condition that affects the spine. It can cause physical and intellectual disabilities that range from mild to severe, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."Kind of like a cute orange that was on his back, so the spine opened up — the spinal cord kind of came out, which affected the way that he walks today," Amber said.Alex has undergone six surgeries throughout his lifetime. His family has traveled the country for foot casts to help correct his clubfeet and he has attended therapy nearly all of his life. Amber said they work his muscles every day to make them stronger."We give him all the opportunities that we give our daughter and our son," she said.This summer, Amber said she tapped into a spina bifida mom's group on Facebook and asked about bikes for children with the condition. She said she was quickly directed to the nonprofit Adaptive Adventures. The organization provides outdoor sports opportunities for people with physical disabilities. The organization loaned Amber a unique bike to fit Alex's needs.Amber posted a video of Alex on the Adaptive Adventure bike. Christine Garcia, a family friend who met Amber before Alex was born, said the post made her want to take action."My momma heart exploded," Garcia said. "I just got overwhelmed with a feeling of you know what, Alex needs that bike and we have to make this happen."She reached out to Adaptive Adventures and asked to purchase the bike and set up a GoFundMe to raise ,500."The money was raised within days of being posted," Garcia said.Amber said she vividly remembers the priceless expression on Alex's face."He was like, 'What! It's mine?'" she remembered. Las Vegas even has its own museum devoted to the iconic neon of its heyday.It was a dying business, or so it seemed. Friedman says smaller scale, specialty signs are now more popular than ever.  Smaller businesses want to craft a unique sign that stands out and might even be Instagram-worthy.“For us, we’ve never made more neon, and we still can’t make it fast enough, Friedman says.“I think because there's a fresh appreciation of artisanal goods, and people with this instant gratification are appreciating slow process, handmade items, and neon is clearly one of those.”The process can take days to craft just one neon sign.Thomas Rinaldi, a historian who's catalogued some of New York’s most iconic neon signs, says the abundance of new neon is real."People have really kind of seized, maybe more than ever in the last few years, on the kind of unique aesthetic of these exposed tube neon signs,” Rinaldi says. “And it’s become enormously desirable for restaurants, retail environments."However, Rinaldi acknowledges that, in terms of glass blowers still working in neon today, there are fewer of them. Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson on Sunday conceded the Florida Senate race to Republican Gov. Rick Scott, ending his re-election bid after the completion of a statewide recount.Scott announced the concession in a statement, saying, "I just spoke with Senator Bill Nelson, who graciously conceded, and I thanked him for his years of public service."Nelson will make a statement at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, his campaign announced.The concession brings to conclusion a key Senate race that continued to be fought well after Election Day.The Senate race -- along with the governor's and state's race for agriculture commissioner -- went to a machine recount a week ago, but the recount did not do nearly enough for Nelson and further formalized Scott's more than 12,000-vote lead. The contest still fell within the .25% standard for a manual recount of overvotes and undervotes, however.Nelson conceded after the noon deadline for the manual recount, when all of Florida's 67 counties were required to submit their final vote totals to the secretary of state, meaning every vote deemed admissible by county canvassing boards and the courts had been officially counted.The results of the recount showed Scott with a vote lead of 10,033 over incumbent Nelson. Before the completion of the manual recount, Scott had a lead of 12,603 votes.Nelson's concession comes a day after Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum ended his campaign for governor by acknowledging that Republican Ron DeSantis had defeated him. DEL MAR, Calif., (KGTV)— “Enter at your own risk”— That’s what the signs at Del Mar Beach say after at least three shark sightings in as many days. There was also one sighting off the Coronado Coast around noon Wednesday.Del Mar is precisely the escape Kathleen Pierce and her family were after. “We have been suffering in the hundred-degree weather in Temecula so we thought we’d come down to the beach,” Pierce said. It was a great plan until she saw the warning sign at the beach entrance. ADVISORY: SHARK SIGHTED. ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK.“I saw the sign, and I had to pause,” Pierce said. But they jumped into the water anyway, because she figured, the likelihood of actually coming up onto a shark was low. But a few minutes in, her son spotted a few. “When the wave was about to crash, I just saw all of them swimming in a group,” her son Drew said. Drew said they were only about three to four feet long, so he ignored them. His friend was frightened and ran to the shore. “The sharks that were seen off of Del Mar, based on the size, we know that they were juveniles,” Research Biologist at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center, Heidi Dewar said. Dewar said if the sharks are under six feet, they are juveniles. They eat smaller fish, so they pose no threat to people. It is their parents we need to worry about. “If I saw a sub-adult or anything over 6 feet, I would probably personally get out of the water,” Dewar laughed.
