CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The budget issues at the Sweetwater Union High School District appear to be worse than originally predicted, and it has cost some teachers their jobs. On Monday night, the district's school board voted to cut 34 temporary teaching positions in the district's adult education program. One of the teachers losing their jobs, Dottie Giffen, told the board members at the public meeting, "You could say sorry a million times, and the mess that you got us into does not make any of us feel better."Many parents say they are fed up with the cuts and want someone to be held accountable. Giffen said of the district's leadership: "We have no faith, no trust. We want the district cleared out. We want to start over fresh."According to an audit released at the school board meeting on Dec. 3, the district is in its current financial state because of a number of issues, including internal borrowing, unsustainable salary increases, and a decline in student enrollment.The new audit was first reported by The Voice of San Diego, showing the district is borrowing money faster than it can pay back, taking money from Mello-Roos fees on people’s property taxes. This fiscal year alone the will borrow million dollars in addition to the million they already owe. Parents are now hoping the county or state will take over and balance the budget. One parent told 10News he wants the district employees out, replaced by someone with a fresh set of eyes. (KGTV) – The Chula Vista Elementary School District’s appearance on a website list of applicants seeking to reopen schools was determined to be a mistake, the district told ABC 10News.CVESD never applied for a waiver, stating on their Facebook page on Thursday night:“We are aware of a ‘Chula Vista Elementary’ fraudulently being listed as an applicant for a school reopening waiver. Our District has NOT applied for a waiver to reopen our schools. As a part of the waiver process, we would consult with labor units, parents and community organizations first. Our District is working with investigative authorities to determine how documents were submitted purporting ‘Chula Vista Elementary’ is a waiver applicant with the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.”District officials said the 2020-21 school year will begin Aug. 31 with distance learning.On Friday, a district spokesperson told ABC 10News that the listing was the result of an error made by an independent charter school that selected the Chula Vista district name on the San Diego County Health and Human Services website.The spokesperson said the HHSA informed the district of the mistake and the website has since been corrected.Meanwhile, at least 27 schools in San Diego County have already been given the green light to begin in-person learning, with dozens of other schools still waiting for approval.Those schools that have been approved have several things in common, including the ability to maximize outdoor space.The Rancho Santa Fe School District is on the list of those that can bring students back to campus, and Superintendent Donna Tripi said preparing for this was not an easy task."We had to work on the class groupings, we had to do training for staff, training for parents, we had to write up all the protocols and really think out every move that everyone makes on campus,” Tripi said.San Diego County was removed for California's virus monitoring list on Aug. 18, beginning the 14-day countdown the county needs to stay off the list in order to reopen K-12 schools in-person.On-campus classes could resume as soon as Sept. 1, depending on the school district. 2188

More than 60 homeless children and families had their holiday gifts paid for by a group fundraiser. ‘Making San Diego Smile’ formed at the end of November and was able to escort each child on a 0 Walmart shopping spree Wednesday night.“It just brings joy to my heart to know in such a short time we were able to bless so many children,” said Tony Castro, one of the organizers behind 'Making San Diego Smile.'The group says the fundraiser will be much larger next year after knowing the the popularity of it in just a few weeks. 657
