LOS ANGELES (AP) — A shirtless man is in custody after leading Los Angeles-area authorities on an auto pursuit that ended in a Venice Beach parking lot where he was taken down by a stun gun.News helicopters showed the scene Friday afternoon as the pursuit transitioned from a freeway to city streets and then entered the parking lot, where the driver finally stopped and got out of the SUV.The man started walking away, but officers equipped with guns and less-lethal weapons closed in and he suddenly fell flat on his back.Officers swarmed the man as beachgoers gathered to watch.Police tell KTLA the man was suspected of assault and making criminal threats against his mother. 686

She was 94.Known affectionately as the "the Grand Dame of Dish," Smith's legendary work included a chronicle of Donald and Ivana Trump's divorce, which made front-page news.Covering the glitteratiSmith's column, which was titled simply "Liz Smith," became a staple in the publication for a quarter century, and was syndicated in almost 70 newspapers.Smith started her journalism career as a CBS Radio news producer for Mike Wallace, according to the New York Daily News.But it was her sharp writing at Cosmopolitan -- namely the salacious details of the romance between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton -- that led to her break at the Daily News.Her clever barbs and scathing commentary elevated her to the level of notoriety shared by the A-listers she covered -- many of whom are now remembering her fondly."Loved Liz Smith. More than 18,000 people are hospitalized and many of the state’s intensive care units are filled. Mobile field hospitals are being erected in several places around California to handle the overflow of patients. LIVINGSTON, La. (AP) — The 2019 "American Idol" winner Laine Hardy says he's been diagnosed with COVID-19. The 19-year-old singer from Livingston, Louisiana, made the announcement Sunday on social media, saying it's not what he expected on the first day of summer. Hardy says his symptoms are mild and he's recovering under home quarantine. Hardy sang the national anthem at the swearing in of his local sheriff last Friday. He also recently completed a virtual tour that was seen by more than 2 million viewers. LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — A helicopter crashed offshore near Jones Inlet Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.Officials said the pilot, a 64-year-old man, appeared to be attempting a controlled descent at Meadow Island at around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. The chopper landed in an area with about three feet of water.Rescue crews from the Coast Guard and several other local agencies responded. The pilot was rescued from the aircraft and taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, including a facial laceration and back and rib pain. He was the only one on board.There was also some damage to the helicopter.Chief Petty Officer David Turner of the U.S. Coast Guard said he did not know the cause of the crash, nor did he know details of the flight plan.There was very thick fog in the area Wednesday, and while Turner did not know if it was a contributing factor to the landing, he said it's difficult to operate in those conditions.Visibility was only a half-mile in the area at the time of the incident with misty conditions in the area."I kept on hearing this helicopter, circling and circling, and after a couple of circles, it didn't sound right to me," said Damian Walsh the man who helped rescue the pilot and took video of the immediate aftermath.Walsh was out on his boat when he says a thick fog quickly rolled in around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon."It turned pretty quickly probably had about 20 yards of visibility," he said.He and another boater rushed to the scene after hearing a loud splash.One coast guard officer told Walsh that the pilot fell 1,000 feet in three seconds.The helicopter fell into shallow water."He was lucky; if he fell 50 yards over, he wouldn't have survived," Walsh said. "I got him on the boat; I called his wife, let her know he was alight."Walsh said he and a couple of other Good Samaritans got him over to rescuers."They wouldn't have found him in that fog.
