BEIJING, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Although China registered the first monthly trade deficit last month in six years, that would be temporary as the demand for imports is likely to ease with the expected moderation in domestic fixed asset investment, said an economist of JP Morgan Chase."With an anticipated recovery in developed economies this year, Chinese exports should improve gradually over the coming months," said Jing Ulrich, chairman of China Equities and Commodities of the U.S. bank in a research note Saturday. That will be proved by the forward looking new export orders component of China's official PMI (Purchasing Managers's Index) which increased to 53.7 in March from 50.3 in February, she said.China reported trade deficit of 7.24 billion U.S. dollars in March, the first since April 2004, as exports rose 24.3 percent year on year, while imports jumped by 66 percent."The pace of China's export recovery and dynamics of imported inflation will shape the country's approach towards currency valuation. A return to the policy of gradual RMB appreciation would allow China to mitigate imported inflation and promote domestic consumption by boosting household purchasing power in local currency terms," she said. She noted that in the longer-run, more flexibility in China's currency regime would allow the central bank to set monetary policy with greater independence from the U.S. Fed Reserves.

GUIYANG, May 14 (Xinhua) -- A toxic gas burst during an illegal coal mining operation has killed 21 people and injured five others in southwest China's Guizhou Province Thursday, officials said Friday.A total of 31 miners were working in a shaft of Yuanyang Colliery when the accident occurred at about 9:40 p.m. in Puding County, Anshun City. Rescuers on Friday confirmed that 10 people had escaped. The gas burst was triggered by the detonation of explosives for illegal mining, the rescue headquarters said after an initial investigation. The private mine, a combination of three minor collieries, began to improve its infrastructure facilities in 2008 when it received the first of the six necessary mining licenses from the local authorities.Ma Mintang, survivor of the gas outburst, receives treatment in Renmin Hospital of Anshun City, southwest China's Guizhou Province, May 14, 2010. A total of 31 miners were working in a shaft of Yuanyang Colliery in Puding County of Anshun City when a gas outburst occurred at about 9:40 p.m. on Thursday. Rescuers on Friday confirmed that 10 people survived and 21 bodies recovered from the coal mine.Mining was prohibited until the mine passed inspections by authorities and gets the other five business licenses, but the company secretly started mining last year under the guise of shaft maintenance, said Hu Yingze, director of the county coal mining administration. It had illegally produced more than 3,000 tonnes of coal so far, which was, in fact, theft of national resources, he said.Sun Guoqiang, vice governor of Guizhou, blamed county-level authorities for failing to examine the mine."Did anyone of you visit the mine after approving the shaft maintenance project?" Sun asked officials of the county's coal mining administration and work safety watchdog.Rising coal prices had driven the owners to start illegal production as the drought season cut short water supplies for power plants, which had to turn to coal. The market price for coal had risen to about 370 yuan (54 U.S. dollars) per tonne from the normal price of about 300 yuan, said Sun.

SHANGHAI, May 1 (Xinhua) -- What will the future city look like?A statue hanging in the Pavilion of Future in Shanghai Expo Park describes the development of cities in a parabolic way."When the lights come on, the shadow of the statue, which looks like the skyline of New York City, appears on the white screen in front of visitors. And when the lights come from the right side, the shadow on the left screen looks like Shanghai skyline," says pavilion guide Ni Wenhua. A visitor stands in front of a giant electronic book in the Pavilion of Future at the World Expo Park in Shanghai, east China, on May 1, 2010. Shanghai World Expo park formally opened to public on Saturday. The Pavilion of Future invites visitors to imagine what cities will be like in the future through movies, books and sculptures. But the skylines come from unexpected materials -- city garbage, including refrigerators, tyres, bicycles, metal parts, and steering wheels."The statue is a warning that the development of cities should not be a process of polluting. It should a harmonious process of coexistence between people and the environment," Ni says.
