SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County's unemployment rate ticked down to 14.8%, but a potential new wave of closures could wipe out a large portion of the recent job gains.The San Diego Association of Governments reported Thursday that the jobless rate in the region is continuing to drop from a peak of 25% on May 9. Still, roughly 250,000 workers in the county remain unemployed amid the Coronavirus outbreak. Ray Major, the agency's chief economist, said the increased spread of the virus could lead to prolonged economic frustration. "What (the report) shows is that we're ready to go back to work, but that the recovery is probably going to be slow, and we're probably going to be having this conversation with double digit unemployment throughout the summer and probably into the fall," he said. The potential drawbacks would take a financial and mental toll on thousands of workers who returned to their jobs, only to be sent back to file for unemployment. Season and Ian McKesson had to close their two hair salons when the pandemic broke in March and got by on unemployment. "It was hard working 50 to 60 hours a week and being proud that you can maintain everything and then all of a sudden you can't do anything. It was almost like being ripped apart, for me," Season said. The McKessons had to shutter their Mission Hills salon permanently but did reopen their Fallbrook location, called Mary Jane North. That cleared the way for seven stylists, including them, to go back to work. "We get nervous because there's things that are still shutting down around, and so that's a little daunting," Season said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Rent isn't the only thing in San Diego on the rise - so are the costs and fees associated with it. A recent study from HotPads, a Zillow-owned site, says San Diegans can pay ,270 per year in overlooked costs and fees that come with moving. The includes security and pet deposits, pet rent and parking. The biggest chunk comes from the security deposit, which is typically one month's rent. In all, it works out to an additional 6 per month. "As rent prices continue to rise and rent affordability remains a concern, it is important for renters to consider all their potential expenses before planning a move," said Joshua Clark, economist at HotPads. "There's all kinds of things they might charge you for at move-in, so you want to be sure to check before you sign anything," she said. Steingrebe focuses largely on downtown, renting out privately owned condos. She says some buildings even require tenants hire move-in coordinators to make sure things go smoothly and not disturb other residents. Renters don't pay the HOA directly, but landlord's can pass along any sort of fines or violations they commit. "Unauthorized moves, these buildings downtown, you can't just walk in with your couch, you have to schedule it," Steingrebe said, adding dumping trash inappropriately can also lead to fines. The biggest financial issues that arise for renters come at the end of a lease, when it comes to getting a security deposit refunded, Steingrebe said. She said the best defense is to document with photos and text any damage or issues that occur throughout the year, starting with an initial move-in inspection. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police and National City firefighters used “scare tactics” this Halloween with elaborate haunted stations, touted as safer alternatives to traditional trick-or-treating on dark streets.The Southeastern Division police station building on Skyline Drive was transformed into a walk-though “haunted station," with room after room of zombies, creepy clowns and ghouls, some played by department employees in costume.“It’s all in good fun, for the kids to save a safe place to go, to get a little scared but in a safe environment,” San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said before she took a tour of the haunts.Joseph Lemon, Jr. does not let his 11-year-old daughter Ananda do traditional trick-or-treating.“It’s not as safe as it used to be, and you have to go and x-ray the candy and all of that," Lemon, Jr. said. "Now many of the churches and the police department put on events like this that are safer.” They also had candy and entertainment in the parking lot. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria says the city's convention center shelter for the homeless will be funded through at least the first month of 2021.Gloria said in a release that he's directing staff to provide funding using money previously slated for shelter operations in November and December that wasn't spent due to cost-saving measures and other factors, as well as a state grant specifically for funding homelessness-related services."I am committed to protecting our homeless neighbors from COVID-19 while keeping a focus on connecting them to long-term housing," Gloria said.
