A new species of prehistoric reptile has apparently been discovered within the depths of the Petrified Forest National Park in northeastern Arizona.Named Skybalonyx skapter, the fossilized remains are believed to be a new species of drepanosaur, a reported 220-million-year-old burrowing reptile that potentially looked like a combination of an anteater and chameleon, the Petrified Forest National Park said Tuesday in a news release.Skybalonyx skapter, though, may have looked even more peculiar, the release said.Drepanosaurs have been noted to have interesting features, such as "enlarged second claws, bird-like beaks, and tails ending with a claw," the release said.The discovery was made by research teams from Petrified Forest National Park, Virginia Tech, University of Washington, Arizona State University, Idaho State University, and the Virginia Museum of Natural History, according to the release.Their findings were reportedly published on Oct. 8 in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. The study compared the claws of drepanosaurs to Skybalonyx skapter to modern animals, and reportedly found that Skybaonyx skapter's claws were similar to moles, echidnas, and mole-rats.Adam Marsh, the lead paleontologist at the Petrified Forest, said in an email that the bones were discovered during the summers of 2018 and 2019 as part of a paleontological dig.Due to their small size, the remains were reportedly difficult to find using traditional methods. Essentially, research teams used a series of metal screens and water to sift and break down rocks to find the fossils.He said the bones were found in the eastern expansion of the forest that was acquired in 2011. A New York appeals court has cleared the way for a publisher to distribute a tell-all book by President Donald Trump's niece over the objections of the president's brother. The New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division issued the written decision late Wednesday. The appeals court lifted a restraint that a judge put on Simon & Schuster that sought to block its distribution. But it left in place restraints against Mary Trump. She's the author of “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man.” The publisher, Simon & Schuster, and a lawyer for Mary Trump praised the ruling. An email seeking comment was sent to a lawyer for Robert Trump, who sued Mary Trump. 718

A Spirit Airlines employee has been charged with allegedly stabbing a co-worker during an argument at Cleveland Hopkins Airport, according to a police report.Around 7 p.m. on Nov. 12, police were called to the Spirit Airlines ticket counter for an altercation between two employees.When they arrived, authorities found a male employee who said he had just been stabbed in the stomach with a pair of scissors by another employee, the report said.  According to the report, the victim said around 6:30 p.m. he was sitting on the "belt" behind the counter when a third employee told him he wasn't allowed to sit down.  The employee also told the victim the suspect, 39-year-old Vonda Gardner, had taken photographs of him sitting down.The victim approached Gardner about the photograph and Gardner denied taking any pictures and swore at him, the report said.According to the report, the victim told Gardner he wanted to have a discussion with management to resolve the situation, to which she replied: "don't worry about it, I got it taken care if."During this time, Gardner was typing an email on her computer while the victim was standing behind reading over her shoulder. When Gardner realized this, she turned her computer monitor off.The victim reached over, turned the monitor back on and was then stabbed by Gardner with a pair of scissors she had been holding, the report said.The victim grabbed the scissors from Gardner and ran to security.Gardner was charged with felonious assault and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 22. 1571

A total of 173 sea turtles died off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, this week because of the extreme cold, according to Mass Audubon Director Bob Prescott.Prescott said 227 cold-stunned turtles were recovered from the Gulf of Maine since Wednesday, but only 54 lived. Mass Audubon, the largest nature conservation nonprofit in Massachusetts, regularly patrols the beaches this time of year looking for cold-stunned turtles, Prescott said.But this was many more than they expected, he said. 490

A pro-growth group's sweeping victory this week could smooth the road for more dense housing in San Diego's uptown neighborhoods.The group, Rise Up Town, won all seven open seats on the city's Uptown Planning Group. The all-volunteer board makes official recommendations to the City Council on proposals in Hillcrest, Bankers Hill, Mission Hills and parts of University Heights. Rise Up Town campaigned on "taller, well designed buildings," with support for affordable development, faster approval, and more walkable and bikeable neighborhoods, with lower speed traffic. It also said the current board members weren't doing enough to support growth in a time that San Diego needs it. "We thought that we could address the problems that we saw in terms of housing affordability, in terms of bike and pedestrian infrastructure within the community," said Clint Daniels, one of the newly elected members. "We got together, we were passionate about it, and we thought those passionate ideas that we could serve the community well."About 500 people voted in the election, held Tuesday before the Uptown Planning Group's meeting. The vote unseated three incumbents, including board chair Leo Wilson. Mat Wahlstrom, who lost his bid for re-election, said he's concerned the new members could serve as a rubber stamp for developers. "None of us have said anything against appropriate density," he said. "We definitely don't want to put all of uptown under saran wrap."There are 17 members on the Uptown Planning Group.
