(AP) — Jurors have reached a verdict in the case of a Southern California man charged with killing a family of four and burying their bodies in the desert.The San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office said Friday that the verdict in the case against 62-year-old Charles "Chase" Merritt will be read in court Monday.Merritt is charged with killing his business associate Joseph McStay, McStay's wife, Summer, and the couple's 3- and 4-year-old sons.RELATED: Dramatic closing arguments in McStay family murder trialThe family vanished from their San Diego County home in 2010. Three years later, their bodies were found in shallow graves in the desert.Merritt was arrested in 2014. SAN DIEGO — Demoralized business owners are venting their frustration and resentment over the new shutdown order meant to help stop the spread of the coronavirusMonday was day one of restaurants doing takeout only, bars, wineries and personal care shuttered, and hotels limiting travelers.This time, however, workers and employers alike feel like they're being hung out to dry."You're shutting us down, it's like, alright, here you go, good luck. That's what it feels like," said Cesar Vallin, who laid off 70 percent of the remaining staff at the Cloak & Petal restaurant in Little Italy. "The future is we're going to be here and we're going to get through this. I have to really question or ask myself if I want to stay in this business."For the second time since March, Cloak & Petal has been relegated to takeout only due to the new shutdown order. Bars, wineries and personal care salons are totally shut down, while hotels may have to turn away away non-essential out-of-state travelers. SAN DIEGO (AP) — Little Kurt looks like any other baby horse as he frolics playfully in his pen. But the 2-month-old, dun-colored colt is actually a clone. He was created by fusing cells taken from an endangered Przewalski’s horse at the San Diego Zoo in 1980. The cells were infused with an egg from a domestic horse that gave birth to Kurt two months ago. The baby boy was named for Kurt Benirschke, a founder of the San Diego Zoo's Frozen Zoo, where thousands of cell cultures are stored. Scientists hope Kurt will help restore the Przewalski’s population, which numbers only about 2,000. 599

(KGTV) -- A mother of three, nearly killed when a great white shark bit her in April, is paying it forward after countless people donated tens of thousands of dollars to help with her medical bill and living expenses while she recovers.Leeanne Ericson of Vista was the guest bartender Monday evening at Cassano’s in San Clemente.It was originally a fundraiser for Ericson. She decided to give the night’s donations to the Torrey Pines Surf Ministry which takes Wounded Warriors, and others with physical disabilities, surfing.Ericson lost much of her right thigh when the shark bit her April 29.“Leeanne was out swimming while I surfed, and a great white, mistaken identity, though she was a sea lion and took her instead,” her boyfriend Dusty Phillips said.Related: 801
SAN DIEGO — A growing number of restaurants in San Diego want to wall off the parking spots outside their front doors and replace them with tables.The concept is called a Parklet, and the city of San Diego appears to be ready to embrace it - at least until social distancing mandates lift. "It's San Diego. We're getting the most beautiful weather of the year. Let us have some seats out there. Let us have some tables," said Merritte Powell, who owns La Puerta restaurant on 4th Avenue. Powell is readying an application to the city that would allow him to build on a curbside section of the street in front of his restaurant and put more seating. He says it's key to survive amid social distancing restrictions, which have limited his capacity. In fact, La Puerta even with hourlong waits still only pulls in 50 percent of the revenue it would have made before the Coronavirus outbreak. On bad days, revenue drops by as much as 70 percent. "Because of the way the seating is, because of the social distancing, stuff like that, I'm nowhere near where I need to be," Powell said. On July 7, the City Council will consider an urgency ordinance that would waive some fees for Parklets and help streamline their construction. Restaurants from downtown, Little Italy and North Park are all readying applications. The opportunity could help level the playing field for restaurants on streets that cannot be closed to vehicle traffic for on-street dining. The city has already permitted road closures on 5th Avenue and India Street for restaurants to expand. A stretch of North Park could be next. The urgency ordinance would last until social distancing restrictions expire or are lifted. 1693
