SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego man died after crashing his car into a ditch overnight Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash happened on I-5 north near Clairemont in East Mission Bay. Officers say they believe the single-vehicle crash happened sometime overnight, but wasn't reported until the sun came up. According to CHP, the car crashed into a ditch on the side of a freeway. Officers say it's too early to determine if drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.  521

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new study reveals the importance of having qualified athletic trainers available at high schools. One of the experts behind the study says he is shocked at how poor a job California does at regulating athletic safety."California is either dead last or next to last in all of these ratings of high school sports safety," according to Dr. Eric Post, an Assistant Professor at San Diego State University, who helped author the study.Robbie Bowers, trainer at Rancho Bernardo High School, says only about 60 percent of California schools have a certified trainer. With several sporting events and practices occurring for each school on any given day, it's nearly impossible even for schools with a trainer to have adequate coverage for all athletes.According to Post's research, that greatly increases the risks for student athletes who suffer an injury. "At schools with low athletic trainer availability, kids with a concussion were more likely to have that concussion go unidentified and also more likely to have that concussion be mismanaged as a result." Post adds that at schools with low trainer availability, an athlete with a concussion was often not treated until 24 hours after the injury. At schools with adequate trainer availability, athletes got initial treatment within 30 minutes.Bowers has backed previous efforts to create a statewide standard and certification; however, those legislative attempts have failed to pass. Zolezzi says over the last three years, there's been an increase of 300 licenses. The prices of rent, insurance, and goods have all gone up in the past year. There are also higher labor costs because of minimum wage hikes and low unemployment creating favorable hiring conditions for employees.But cost isn't the only factor."Customer loyalty, today, is really at a low," says Zolezzi. His members say diners now would rather go to multiple places once than become regular, dependable customers at a few spots."You could be doing everything right," he says. Zolezzi says these apps can charge restaurants as much as 30% of the total bill, plus delivery fees, to carry their food. That cuts into already razor-thin margins and in some cases cause restaurants to lose money on each delivery order."If you don't have that factored into your business plan, it could create a negative," he says.Zolezzi says it's now up to the industry to adapt, as restaurant owners need to constantly reinvent their location, menu, and marketing to bring in more customers. 2568

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A passenger has tested positive for coronavirus on one of the first Caribbean cruises since the pandemic started. The case may push the start of cruising out of San Diego even further.On its maiden voyage since the pandemic, the SeaDream Cruiseliner has its first case of COVID-19. Travel writer Gene Sloan for “The Points Guy” is on that ship and now stuck in quarantine.“They’re going right now cabin to cabin and testing everyone on board,” said Sloan.The ship with 53 passengers and 66 crew set sail from Barbados on Saturday. Sloan says everyone got tested before getting on board and the trip was going well until the captain made an announcement Wednesday that someone had tested positive.All passengers were instructed to self-isolate in their staterooms.The CDC’s “No Sail Order” for ships in the United States expired Oct. 30. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man attempting to kill weeds set his house on fire in San Diego Sunday, according to firefighters.The fire happened just before 11 a.m. on the 4500 block of Clairemont Avenue. The man was trying to use a hand-held propane torch to kill the weeds in a planter box in front of his property when the plants caught fire.Shortly after the plants caught fire, the flames spread to the rest of the house.Firefighters arrived quickly and were able to extinguish the flames in about five minutes.Authorities estimate there is about ,000 in damage to the house.No one was injured. 613
