MANILA, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine government's high- level delegation to Beijing and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to brief the Chinese side the hijack crisis was postponed and would be reset soon, senior government official said Thursday.Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, quoting the Department of Foreign Affairs as telling reporters that the Philippine government is "awaiting for the confirmation of the Chinese side on the arrangement that will ensure that the mission of the planned visit is achieved."He added that appropriate announcement will be made when the visit will take place.Earlier, Philippine authorities said the high-level delegation composed of Vice-President Jejomar Binay, Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo and Lacierda were supposed to leave for Beijing on Thursday and then proceed to Hong Kong on Friday.The officials will personally deliver President Benigno Aquino III's messages when meeting with Chinese leaders in Beijing and Hong Kong.The hostage crisis in Manila, involving a 21-member Hong Kong tour group, ended on Monday night with eight hostages killed and several others injured. The dismissed Filipino police officer, who hijacked the tour bus, was also killed during the police assault.President Bengigno Aquino has said the Monday's hostage-taking drama was "ghastly" and admitted there were "many failures". Aquino and other officials have promised a full investigation. BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Saturday cautioned against more rain-triggered disasters such as flood and mudslide during the rain season, and demanded for strengthened preventive measures.Currently most parts of the nation is experiencing the flood season when geological disasters becomes rampant, especially in the mountainous areas in the western region, Hui told a national meeting on geological disaster prevention on Saturday.He said authorities should keep a clear mind on the grim situations and step up efforts to prevent and fight the disaster with scientific methods.Massive mudslides hit northwestern China's Zhouqu County in Gansu Province on Aug. 8, with death toll rising to 1,239 as of 4 p.m. Saturday, and 505 are still missing.On early Saturday, at least 38 people were missing after rain-triggered floods and landslides ravaged Wenchuan County in southwest China's Sichuan Province, the epicenter of an 8.0 magnitude earthquake which left about 87,000 people dead or missing more than two years ago.Hui has called for all-out rescue efforts in Wenchuan County's mudslide. He asked local authorities to promptly evacuate residents, and speedily restore transport and telecommunication facilities in the area.The Vice Premier asked the local water, meteorological, and land authorities to closely monitor the situation and issue prompt forecasts and warnings on the floods and rain.Monitoring geological risks should be immediately launched in the towns, villages, and areas along roads and railway tracks, Hui said.Dangerous zones should be marked and people should be prevented from entering such risky areas.Hui said more work was needed to be done to ensure residents have food to eat and water to drink. CHENGDU, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) - A panda cub born Friday afternoon at a breeding center in southwest China is just another panda bear born at the center. What makes her unique is her mother.Jini, the panda mother, gave birth to the female cuba at the age of 17. She is compared to a human in her sixties, the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in Sichuan Province said in a statement.The female cub weighed 125 grams. She was born at 14:41 p.m., four hours after Jini went into labour. Both the mother and cub are in good health, said the statement.Jini, a resident of Beijing Zoo, was sent to the Wolong center this March for the cub-birth purpose because the research center has developed expertise in breeding techniques.With a 20-year breeding history, the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center is home to the world's largest captive panda population. It has helped Beijing Zoo and Chongqing Zoo and many zoos in other countries in breeding and feeding pandas.The new cub is Jini's second. It is the eleventh cub born at the Wolong center this year."Pandas come into heat in the spring and give birth in autumn. This is the main reason for the panda 'baby boom'," said Dang Chunxiang, an expert with the Wolong Center.More than 10 other pandas are expected to give birth over the next one or two months at the Wolong center.Jini delivered her first cub "Qingqing" in 2007 when she was thirteen and a half years old, which was itself rare amongst pandas. She also entered record books with her pregnancy that lasted 324 days. Generally, pandas deliver in 120 -150 days.The length of a panda's pregnancy depends on its health and nutrition level, according to experts.About 1,600 giant pandas are living in the wilds in China. Sichuan Province and the northwestern provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu are the home to most of them. Another 290 pandas are in captive-bred programs worldwide, mostly in mainland China.

HUZHONG, Heilongjiang, July 1 (Xinhua) -- More than 20,000 firemen are battling lighting-triggered forest fires in northeast China as continuous hot weather undermines their efforts, forest fire prevention authorities said.The fire, spotted Saturday, continued to spread Wednesday due to high temperatures after having weakened overnight, said Sun Zhagen, deputy director of China's National Forest Fire Prevention Headquarters.The forest fire first occurred in a part of the Greater Hinggan Mountains in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and then extended to the neighboring Heilongjiang Province.Rescuers were still struggling to put out the fire at more than 30 sites in the two regions, said a spokesman with the fire fighting headquarters at Huzhong, a major fire site.Further, another 6,000 fire fighters and additional equipment would be sent to control the fire in Heilongjiang, said the spokesman."As it is too hot to get close to the scene to put out the fire, we have to build fire barriers during the day and battle the blaze at night," said Pang Zhiqiang, a forest policeman.Sparks are being buried under the burnt debris of wood, often as deep as 30 cm and easily set on fire again by wind, said rescuers at Huzhong District."We felt thirsty, dizzy and had trouble breathing after staying in the burnt forest for just 10 minutes", one fireman said.Each of the rescuers, carrying about 25 kg of equipment on his back, could only carry four bottles of drinking water, a rescuer with the Heilongjiang forestry police force told a Xinhua reporter. "If the bottle water is not enough, we drink the river water, though there are worms in it."Some thirsty fire fighters said they even dug into the ground and breathed in the moisture. Also, many rescuers have become exhausted after remaining awake and working for four days.Temperatures in the Greater Hinggan Mountains Region have been hovering over 37 degrees Celsius recently and seven counties and districts have witnessed record-high temperatures, said Na Jihai, chief of the Heilongjiang Provincial Meteorological Bureau.Temperatures in Huzhong District hit 39.7 degrees Celsius Saturday, Na said.Fire-control experts in Inner Mongolia also said such an extremely-hot weather was rarely seen over the past six decades.The two regions have dispatched three aircraft and 10 cloud seeding rockets to conduct artificial precipitation operations, according to local meteorological departments.The dry and hot weather will continue for the next three days, but a light rain is forecast for Thursday, according to the National Meteorological Center of China Meteorological Administration."This is a battle between human beings and nature.
