CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Protests are planned over the demotion of a popular South Bay principal.Mary Rose Peralta had been principal of Chula Vista High School since 2013. Viktoria Camacho was one of her former students.“She was a great leader. She was one to walk down the hallways with a smile on her face,” Camacho said.“My freshman year of high school was 2013 and that was actually Ms. Peralta’s first year as principal. We always kind of had that ‘we started high school together’ journey,” Camacho said.Peralta was removed from her position at the end of the school year. She is now the principal at Chula Vista Middle School. Supporters, as well as a petition online, said her demotion had to do with giving her students a “creative step for graduation to give class of 2020 a warm goodbye.”ABC 10News covered the event, where the names of all 642 graduating seniors were painted on the field.A district spokesperson would not confirm that graduation had anything to do with Peralta’s demotion.“Ms. Peralta began the school year as the principal at Chula Vista Middle School. Any information behind the reason for that is a personnel matter, and as you know we can’t share specifics about that,” spokesperson Manny Rubio wrote to Team 10.Her removal came just days after Dr. Moises Aguirre became acting superintendent of the Sweetwater Union High School District. He replaced Dr. Karen Janney after she was placed on paid administrative leave amid an investigation into the district’s multi-million dollar budget shortfall.“Especially in the middle of a pandemic, when students need consistency, this shift really had an impact on the community,” Camacho said.Camacho wrote an email to Dr. Aguirre in early July about Peralta’s demotion. He did not address the situation, writing instead that he had “every confidence that Mr. Alcala will serve the Chula Vista High School community in the same open and welcoming manner he did at Chula Vista Middle.”Camacho said her criticism of the district’s decision has nothing to do with the new principal, but emphasized Ms. Peralta should have never been removed in the first place.“If you ask anyone, she was a star. She was probably one of the best things to happen at Chula Vista High School,” added Aaron Barrera, another former student.Barrera and Camacho are the driving forces behind the petition online, demanding Peralta get her job back. As of Tuesday afternoon, it had more than 7,800 signatures.“It's quite the injustice, it's quite unfair, and it's plain out wrong,” said Barrera.Peralta has not spoken publicly about her demotion. On Monday August 10th, an in-car protest will take place at the district office with her supporters, including educators, families, and leaders of the local Filipino community. At least 200 cars are expected to attend. 2827

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — As ICU capacities continue to dip, coronavirus positive cases within the local Latino community stay high. Leaders within the Latino community are now pleading with people to stay home during the holidays. Christmas is just days away, it's a festive time for family, a joyous time of gathering. But Nancy Maldonado with the Chicano Federation says this year, that cannot happen."I get it, it's hard, but it's necessary, and it's what we have to do right now," Maldonado said. The percentage of Latino San Diegans testing positive with COVID-19 is disproportionately high. While making up 34% of the county population, Latinos make up nearly 60% of positive COVID cases. With ICU space now extremely limited, Maldonado says they cannot afford to add to those statistics."Latinos have been hit really hard because of the overrepresentation in front line jobs, because of crowded housing, and because of a number of different factors," Maldonado said. "What we're seeing right now is the fallout of people gathering from Thanksgiving, and we don't want to see these numbers increase."Last week, ABC 10News reported that the wait times at the South Chula Vista Library's free, no-appointment COVID testing site were hours long. But beginning Sunday, the county changed the site to be appointment only. The goal is to keep people from going out and gathering at a COVID-19 hotspot. The South Bay, which is home to many Latinos, has been hit hardest with the virus. Maldonado says that is why the Chicano Federation has boots on the ground to launch the "With Pride" campaign."It's the 'Con Orgullo' campaign, 'With Pride,'" Maldonado translated. "Because what we really want to do is touch on people's pride that they feel when keeping their families and communities safe."Their message is for people to get tested, stay safe, and stay home during the holidays."We are very family-oriented," Maldonado said. "Traditionally, we do gather during the holidays, and we gather in large groups. So we're sending a message that this holiday season, it has to look different so that next year, we can all get back to celebrating the way we love to. It's great to feel hopeful. But it's not okay to let your guard down. Not yet." 2250

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The impeachment hearing was front and center Wednesday afternoon in Professor Phil Saenz’s political science class at Southwestern College. As lawmakers questioned witnesses in the first public hearing, Saenz walked his class through the impeachment process and the latest developments that came from the testimony.“How many of you, based on what you know right now, believe there's at least enough for an impeachment?” he asked the class.RELATED: Impeachment hearing testimony further connects President to Ukraine pressureMore than half raised their hands, but as the discussion continued, it became clear many were still skeptical that the impeachment process had made much impact yet.“Right now, today, it’s not impeachably wrong,” said Gerard Cook. His classmate, Shadi Bargho, said he thinks the allegations are enough for impeachment but understands there are conflicting narratives.“There’s just so much being put out there that it’s really easy to put it on the side and not pay attention to any of it,” said Bargho. 1060

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) — The man accused of threatening St Rose of Lima Church and School plead not guilty at his arraignment Friday at the Chula Vista Courthouse.During the afternoon proceedings Thomas Escajeda, 61, entered the courtroom and sat shoulders hunched, a frown carved into his face with eyes nervously panning the room.No facts in the case were shared, and bail stayed at 0,000.RELATED: Man accused of threatening South Bay church, school says it's all a misunderstandingAfter the arraignment, Escajeda's attorney Adam Hepburn spoke on his demeanor, "he's never been in custody before, this is his first time ever being arrested this is his first time ever having this type of contact with law enforcement... He is clearly upset, it's a new setting it's very difficult."Escajeda spoke exclusively with 10News from jail Thursday explaining it was all a big misunderstanding. He said he called the church office and wanted to help out with the All Saint's Day activities."If I could sell hot chocolate, and coffee maybe some donuts, I could make a killing because you know when you get up at 6:15 to go to church it's pretty cold," he said he didn't get to finish his sentence and wanted to apologize to everyone at the congregation.RELATED: Chula Vista church receives threat against All Saints Day massWhen Choir Member Silvia Sotelo heard what he told 10News she was surprised, "so hard to believe that... I think when we call an office, I mean we don't tell them I mean okay I'm going to kill everybody because I'm going to make a good chocolate, I mean that is not that way that we talk when we make a phone call."When asked if he should be punished, she replied, "It's not something I will decide," saying she wasn't the one to judge.Escajeda is facing a felony criminal threat and misdemeanor electronic communications threat charges."We take these threats very seriously I can tell you that our office and several other agencies formed essentially a committee, or a task force, and tried to develop protocols for these situations so we can get out in front," Deputy District Attorney Christopher Blaylock said.He could not say how long they've had the task force in place.Hepburn said they didn't argue the 0,000 bail Friday, "In order to combat or contradict that we like to get as many facts as possible, speak to family, friends, and do our own investigation before we make a bail pitch."Hepburn said the judge has to make a ruling on bail based on what has been presented so far in the police report, and take that as fact.If Escajeda's not guilty plea stands and he gets out, Sotelo said she'd welcome him back, "we're all sons of God it wouldn't be any different with me." 2762
