The Dominican Republic's top tourism official on Friday downplayed a spate of deaths among American tourists as an exaggeration."It's not true that there has been an avalanche of American tourists dying in our country, and it's not true that we have mysterious deaths here," Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia told reporters.Garcia said toxicology reports were still pending in some cases but that autopsy results and causes of death have been released. He said his country has been in constant communication with US Embassy officials.The characterization in some media outlets of an "avalanche of deaths does not correspond to reality," he said.At the news conference, the minister read the names of the Americans who have died in the past year, with the official cause of death -- noting that all died of natural causes.Garcia said Americans are not canceling their vacations to the Dominican Republic. His country was working to clear up what he called misrepresentations and "exaggerated" reports about the deaths."We want the truth, not a special treatment," he said.At least nine American citizens have died at Dominican Republic resorts -- or after falling ill at one -- over the past year, according to information from the US State Department, victims' family members and the resorts involved.The deaths have left some Americans wondering if they should cancel upcoming trips to the Caribbean nation.Officials there have called the deaths isolated events as they work to reassure travelers their country is safe.Of the nine Americans who have died while or after visiting a Dominican Republic resort since June 2018, it's not clear how many deaths owed to natural causes.Samples taken from at least one minibar at the Bahia Principe Hotel were being tested by the FBI as part of the agency's collaboration with Dominican authorities, the country's public health ministry said this week.Officials in the Dominican Republican or the United States have not said the deaths are connected.Three of the Americans died at the Bahia Principe resort in La Romana within days of each other. Two died at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana.The investigations into the deaths have included visits from health inspectors, including environmental health and epidemiology specialists, according to Carlos Suero, spokesman for the public health ministry.The State Department has a standing travel advisory for the Dominican Republic, urging travelers to have caution because of crime, but it has not issued a travel alert specific to the traveler deaths.From 2012 to 2018, 128 Americans died in the Dominican Republic from something other than natural causes, according to US State Department statistics. That averages about 18 annually.The Dominican Republic is one of the Caribbean's top tourism destinations, with more than 6 million stopover tourists last year, including 2.2 million Americans, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization.Tourism represented more than 17 percent of the country's economy last year, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. 3098

The city of Fresno doesn’t fit the California stereotype; it can be a tough city that raises tough kids. Kids like Jose Flores. “A lot of the violence around here, the drugs,” Flores says. Flores attends Duncan Polytechnical High School, and he’s on the welding track. All the students at Duncan are enrolled in a Career Technical Education. “We know that this is what our community needs, and frankly, this is what our community wants," said Jeremy Ward, who runs the College & Career Readiness program for Fresno Unified School District. "Jobs related to college really only speaks to a portion of the jobs that exist in the United States today. There are many skilled professions that are very well paid that have nothing to do with going to college." But it’s not just students at Duncan. Almost half of the students in Fresno are enrolled in CTE programs. The district thinks it’s one of the best ways to prepare students, who may not go to college, for some other real-world opportunities. “Students that are engaged in career technical education, there’s a heavy amount of data that shows that there’s a higher degree of graduation and that there’s a higher degree of post-secondary success, because of the experience they have by participating in a CTE program,” said Ward. At Duncan, students can enroll in welding, truck tech, manufacturing, and even nursing. “They are in a CNA program, by the time they graduate, they’ll have the requirements they need to take their state competency evaluation exam,” said Jodi Uyeg, a nursing teacher. “We get to work with real residents and practice the skills that we’ve learned here there; that way we’re ready for our CNA test in May,” said Evelyn Gamble, a nursing student. The idea is that these CTE programs give students a ton of options to join the workforce or go to college. Options they might need as rural areas like Fresno keep recovering from the recession. Just ask Ashley Swearingen, the former mayor of Fresno. “We went through as the city of Fresno, five years of consistent budget cuts," Swearengin said. "In some years, we were doing two or three budgets a year just to try and keep up with plummeting revenues, and of course, expenses were still going up." Swearingen has been working hard to try and help the area recover, but it hasn’t been easy. “We’ve struggled for a long time," said Swearingen. "I mean, this is a place that’s had chronic, double-digit unemployment for literally 30 to 40 years.” But schools like Duncan give kids in more rural areas a way to earn a good living or continue their education. For Flores, this opportunity was a big deal. “Growing up a lot of friends being killed a lot of gang violence,” said Flores. He’s been to more than a few funerals for friends his own age. “A lot of middle school friends that you know we were close, but we all went to different high schools," said Flores. "They all started doing their own things and even a couple of them are dead now, you know? It’s sad to say but that’s the life the chose. You think I’m going to know these people 30 years down the line and you know, it’s over right there." But he credits his family and the opportunities he’s had to keep him off the streets and alive. “Being around a lot of those people, it’s drags you in there,” he said. The woman is seen hitting her head on metal kitchen equipment. She was slow to get up, but eventually continued with the burglary, along with a male accomplice. The Chicago police union again is calling for a federal investigation into State's Attorney Kim Foxx to determine the extent of her involvement with the Jussie Smollett case.Kevin Graham, president of the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police, said the demand is based on news reports about text messages between Foxx and an attorney about, according to him, "diverting the case from Chicago police department to a federal investigation."Foxx, the state's attorney for Cook County, recused herself from the Smollett investigation in mid-February.Graham, who spoke to reporters after prosecutors announced they were dropping charges against Smollett, said he originally made the request to the US Department of Justice last week. He also has asked federal investigators to look into a letter sent to Smollett days before he alleged he was attacked on a Chicago street."We're doubling down on that. We want to make sure that the Justice Department takes a very hard look with that case and what went on today," he said.Text messages obtained by CNN through an open records request show Smollett family friend Tina Tchen -- a former chief of staff for first lady Michelle Obama and a lawyer -- reached out to Foxx on February 1. Tchen wrote the family had "concerns about the investigation."Foxx emailed Tchen saying in part, "Spoke to Superintendent Johnson. I convinced him to (r)each out to FBI to ask that they take over the investigation. She says Tchen gave her Foxx's number.Hours later, Foxx texts the unidentified family friend that she "spoke to the (police) superintendent earlier, he made the ask. Trying to figure out the logistics."The person responds: "Omg this would be a huge victory."The text message exchange went back and forth with Foxx and the family friend until Feb. 13 and these messages are why Foxx recused herself from the investigation, Cook County State Attorney's Office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said earlier this month.CNN reached out to Foxx on Tuesday but didn't get a response.Efforts to get a comment from the Department of Justice on Tuesday night were also unsuccessful. 2301
