We're all looking forward to the return of live in-person music events. However, some artists and people behind-the-scenes don't want the industry to return to how things were before the pandemic. They want to put a new focus on making the stage more inclusive."We're now in the year 2020. I think people have had enough," said Jerome Crooks with Never Famous. Noelle Scaggs with Diversify the Stage agrees. "I've hit my wits end with being the only one. Being the only one on a stage that looks like me, reflects my skin tone."The message that things have to change is growing louder since the death of George Floyd earlier this year. "The music business can't have an effect on society until we've held ourselves accountable," said Binta Niambi Brown with the Black Music Action Coalition. "For those of us who have long desired to advance issues of equity and justice, it (Floyd's death) created this undeniable moment and we felt like we needed to seize it."Brown is a music executive who recently co-founded the Black Music Action Coalition. She says when we look at music labels and publishers, there are few people of color in senior positions. "The reality is that when we improve anything for a Black person or for Black artists, Black executives, we're improving the model for everyone," said Brown.Noelle Scaggs, with the group Fitz and the Tantrums, is focused on having better pipelines to get young minorities into the live music and touring industry through her organization Diversify the Stage. "I think it's just really about widening the net of opportunity and recruitment and really kind of being considerate of your surroundings and I think we, as artists, we do have a responsibility to participate in this work," Scaggs said.Scaggs teamed up with the tour manager behind Never Famous, Jerome Crooks, to expand a resource where touring professionals can market themselves."The promoters and the vendors they have to listen, you know, and they have to want to be better," said Crooks.Live Nation Urban created a Black Tour Directory which lists hundreds of qualified Black professionals in the music industry. The effort is getting noticed, they landed on the cover of a magazine this month."As a Black man in this industry, I just want to move forward. I want to look forward and I want to bring people under my wing and bring them up," Crooks said. Scaggs added, "I would love for an organization like Diversify the Stage to not have to exist anymore. WASHINGTON, D.C. – The coronavirus grip on the summer of 2020 is shaping up to mean different things to different people.“The picture does look different depending on where you are looking in the country,” said Dr. Caitlin Rivers, an epidemiologist with the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.Only two states – Connecticut and Rhode Island – recorded a drop in coronavirus cases last week. In a dozen other states, mainly in the northern Plains states and the Northeast, cases are steady, including in hard-hit New York and New Jersey, which got their number of COVID-19 cases under control.However, in the other 36 states, the number of coronavirus cases is on the rise, including record-breaking numbers in Florida, Texas, Arizona and NevadaYet, Dr. Rivers says don’t call it a "second wave."“Most communities never left the first wave and so it's difficult to call it a second wave,” she said.But could a second wave of state lockdowns be on the horizon? Dr. Rivers said that can be hard to know, but that would come down to a number of factors – the main one being hospital capacity.“It's nobody's preference to reinstitute the lockdowns. They're enormously disruptive - they're costly to say the least. It's a very difficult set of circumstances,” Dr. Rivers said. “So, that's really for the worst-case crisis situation. But we can't rule it out because we also cannot allow our health care systems to become overwhelmed.”That means, there is a need to keep hospitals from reaching 90% capacity. Already, some states have paused their reopenings. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Since the start of his presidency, President Donald Trump and his administration have talked about getting manufacturing companies to come back to the United States, a process known as reshoring.Now, with unemployment at a historic high, another 1.5 million people filing jobless claims last week and still 19.5 million continued claims or people unemployed, the idea of reshoring is being revisited by Congress.Some on Capitol Hill are proposing reshoring incentives for companies in the next stimulus package.“There are a lot of potential ways that the administration and Congress could come up with tax subsidies and tax breaks for companies that produces here,” said Ed Yardeni, an economist and the president of Yardeni Research.While believes there could be some jobs created by companies reshoring in the U.S., it’s hard to say how many. That’s partly because, many companies that would consider reshoring would also consider using artificial intelligence at their production plants.“Clearly bringing back jobs would be great, but I don’t think we go back to the 70s and 80s, where we had a lot more people employed,” Yardeni added. “I would think that if you are reshoring and bring production back to the U.S., you are going to use state of the art technology to do that, so I’m not sure it is going to be a huge win-win in terms of jobs.”Experts, including Yardeni, believe companies that would most likely consider reshoring would be those in the pharmaceutical and technology sector. Their reason for the move is likely less for job creation and more because of national security concerns.Either way, the way to get more jobs out of reshoring may be by doing more than just incentivizing companies to come back to the U.S.“Maybe what we need is to combine reshoring with really focusing on reeducating a lot of the labor force so that they can manage the robots, build the robots, program the robots, as opposed to doing the job the robots are doing,” said Yardeni. 2004
We're looking deeper into consequences of police misconduct and brutality against minorities, not to overshadow any loss of life, but to highlight the racial systemic issues it adds to, including mass incarceration.“Has taken black fathers, black sons, out of their families and out of their neighborhoods and put them in a situation where even a short jail term leads to long term, lifelong economic consequences,” said Marc Morial, the president and CEO of the National Urban League.Morial spent the early years of his career as an attorney filing civil rights and police brutality lawsuits, defending black cops, and then became the mayor of New Orleans, helping lead an overhaul of the police department there.Morial says it took strong leadership, changes in recruiting, hiring, and training. He even pushed for a rule requiring police to live in the city where they work.“Lesson to be learned, reforming policing is tough and reforming it in a way that is sustainable is doubly tough,” said Morial.According to a University of Hawaii law review article on police brutality costs, African Americans have a higher rate of PTSD than their white counterparts. And that trauma carries over more significantly in work and everyday activities.Loss of life often means children are left without adequate support, the paper added, leaving them to fend for themselves in a school system that often serves as a pipeline to prison instead of a path to higher education.Police misconduct leads to distrust in urban communities and a lack of cooperation on legitimate crimes.Morial says the solution lies in community-oriented policing and funding.“These communities need investments in schools, youth programs, housing infrastructure,” said Morial. “Inner city America has been hollowed out by public policy and private actions. It’s not fair for the next generation.
