SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld guests are getting their first look at a sea otter pup recently rescued in Alaska and taken in by San Diego staff for care.Cinder, an orphaned sea otter brought to SeaWorld earlier this month from Alaska, has nearly doubled in weight and has been hitting all the developmental milestones for her age, the theme park said. Veterinarians have been caring for the pup around the clock, the park says, and she has been adjusting well to her new home.RELATED: Orphaned sea otter pup brought from Alaska to SeaWorld's careCinder is viewable just in time for Sea Otter Awareness Week. SeaWorld keepers will be hosting presentations about otters and ways to public can help in their care in the wild through Saturday.The young pup arrived at the Alaska SeaLife Center underweight and dehydrated, before being transferred to San Diego. Cinder's now weighs a little more than 10 pounds, feeding on a special sea otter milk formula every three hours.Guests can view Cinder periodically throughout the day at the Otter Outlook nursery.The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has deemed Cinder non-releasable, so SeaWorld's Animal Rescue Team and veterinarians have provided constant care. She is expected to be introduced to the park's other resident female sea otters — Mocha, Coco, Clover and Pumpkin, who range in age from five to nine years old — who were also orphaned. 1393

The incident happened just after noon Sunday at Parking 1, 5300 College Blvd., SDSU officials said. “The suspect began touching himself inappropriately and then fled northbound toward Alvarado Road,” according to a news release. University officials said the man is in his mid-20s, and Hispanic with dark hair and a tan complexion. He is around 5’7” to 5’8” with an average build. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Starting Wednesday, cruise ships will return to the San Diego Embarcadero — but they will not be picking up any customers for months to come. Experts say the longer the vessels stay, the harder it is for the cruise industry to bounce back.The Holland America Koningsdam returned to the Port of San Diego Wednesday morning. It is one of five cruise ships scheduled to dock at the Embarcadero for fuel and supplies. But not to pick up guests.The vessels include:Holland America Koningsdam – December 23Princess Cruises Emerald Princess – December 24 (leaves for Los Angeles after San Diego visit)Holland America Westerdam – December 28Holland America Zuiderdam – January 8Holland America Noordam – January 11"Their revenues compared to say the same time last year are literally down 99%," financial advisor Dennis Brewster said.According to the Port of San Diego, there have been 119 canceled cruises since March and a loss of 0 million in regional economic activity. Unlike airlines and restaurants, which are two other industries hard hit by the pandemic, Brewster says cruises have no Plan B."Their revenues literally went to zero," Brewster said. "I mean, the others were really bad too, but you can't do a cruise ship on a takeout or drive-through."The Port says each cruise line must follow the CDC's "Framework for Conditional Sailing Order" before they can set sail. The first phase is to test and safeguard the crew. The second is a simulated voyage where the ships must prove their ability to mitigate COVID-19 risk. After that, they can slowly reintroduce passengers on their voyages.In the meantime, the ships and crews will stay put. But will the companies be able to stay afloat?"Even if the CDC and other organizations say, 'January one, you can resume your operations,' how many people would get on today?" Brewster asked.The hope is that travel will be on everyone's radar once it shifts away from the coronavirus."I think all of us have spent enough time at home the last nine months to last the next nine years," Brewster said. "So that's a good thing for the industry. There is going to be quite a bit of pent-up demand."According to the Port of San Diego, Holland America has some cruises scheduled to depart in April and May. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Scientists at the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute are working to replenish the California Halibut population.In October, they released 2,300 juvenile halibut into Mission Bay. Those fish were bred, born and raised at the institute. They hope it's just the start of a robust replenishment program."The species is pretty heavily depleted and for that reason, they're a good candidate to help boost the species," says Mark Drawbridge, the Institute's Director of the Sustainable Seafood Program.Recent surveys show the California Halibut is down to 14 percent of what its population should be. The most severe drop has come in Southern California.Hubbs hopes it can replicate the success it had with the White Seabass. It has released nearly 2.5 million seabass into the wild in the last 35 years."A lot of the process is transferable from one species to another," says Drawbridge.The Dick Laub Fisheries Replenishment Program oversees every step of the process, from breeding to release. Drawbridge says they've seen success in every phase so far."Our survival rates from egg to juvenile stage are typically 20 percent or higher," he says. "Compare that to the wild, where it would be a fraction of a percent. That's more than adequate to produce tens of thousands of fish."The next step is seeing how the halibut survive in the wild. The Institute put stainless steel trackers in each fish and will monitor them over the next few years.The program is funded through private donations, many of which come from fisherman who need a healthy halibut population to make a living. 1602
