SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted unanimously, 9-0, today in favor of building a new fire station at UC San Diego.The fire station is the first on the campus and will serve UCSD students, faculty, staff and the school's surrounding neighborhoods. The station will be located in the campus' northwest corner at the intersection of North Torrey Pines Road and Northpoint Driveway."UC San Diego is pleased that the San Diego City Council has approved a fire station to be built on the campus," UCSD Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla said. "We look forward to working together with the City of San Diego on this vital project. UC San Diego is significantly growing its enrollment to make the university one of the nation's premier residential campuses and it is critical that we address life safety issues as part of our growth."More than 36,000 students currently live on UCSD's campus, with the school planning to add another 20,000 student beds by 2022. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The founder and former CEO of a San Diego startup pleaded guilty Wednesday to a federal wire fraud charge for stealing more than .5 million from his own company.Jeffrey Fildey, 56, of Las Vegas, created GoFormz Inc. -- which provides online mobile forms and reporting products -- and began illegally taking money from the company sometime around late 2015 and continued to do so through August 2017, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.U.S. Attorney Robert S. Brewer said, Fildey "abused a position of trust to brazenly steal company assets, treating GoFormz Inc. as his own private slush fund."Prosecutors say Fildey obtained loans -- supposedly for the company -- then kept the funds for himself, paid for personal expenditures on company credit cards, received cash advances for himself on company credit cards and took money directly from the company's bank account.A U.S. Attorney's Office statement announcing the plea cited examples that included a 6,250 loan he obtained for the company, which he immediately wired from the firm's bank account to his personal bank account. The U.S. Attorney's Office said GoFormz made payments on the loan while he spent the money on personal expenses.The U.S. Attorney's Office said Fildey took three unauthorized loans on behalf of the company and transferred the funds to his bank account each time, withdrew more than 0,000 in cash from the company's bank account for his personal use and made more than ,600 in unauthorized purchases on the corporate credit card.The company lost ,544,147 as a result, according to the plea agreement.Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 9. 1658

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The National Institutes of Health awarded San Diego State University a grant of nearly million to build a center for medical research on health issues in San Diego and Imperial counties, the university announced today.SDSU received the grant from the NIH's National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, which supports schools that serve large populations of minority students. According to university officials, 31.5 percent of SDSU's first-year undergraduate students are members of at least one underrepresented minority.The .9 million grant is the second-largest the school has ever received, after a million federal grant the university received in 2014 to expand to the country of Georgia.NIH is expected to administer the grant over five years to fund construction of the HealthLINK Center, multiple research projects and annual seed funding for four researchers pursuing pilot projects."This a wonderful recognition of the faculty's excellence in health disparities research, and a significant opportunity to build on that excellence so that SDSU can remain a leader in this field for years to come," said Stephen Welter, SDSU's vice president for research.SDSU expects to work with local health care agencies and providers like the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, Family Health Centers of San Diego and Clinicas de Salud del Pueblo Inc. through the HealthLINK Center. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to extend a moratorium on evictions for both residents and small businesses for another month, in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, along with board Chairman Greg Cox, made the request, which was unanimously approved. The board first approved an eviction moratorium in late March."By extending the moratorium, we are giving families and business owners another tool to assist in their recovery from the pandemic," Fletcher said. "The Board of Supervisors did the right thing today."Cox said: "This is not an effort to provide free rent. It's really an encouragement for tenants, landlords, to work together on a payment plan."Fletcher added that people who qualify for the moratorium have to prove economic hardship caused by the pandemic.Supervisor Kristin Gaspar said the San Diego Association of Realtors recently sent letter to the county and city of San Diego in support of a rental assistance program.Gaspar asked Chief Administrative Officer Helen Robbins-Meyer if the county can create its own rental assistance program, saying property owners use the rental payments they receive to meet their own bills and employ others."I don't think any of us imaged this pandemic would go on so long," she said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - People who visited the Lucky Lady Casino in San Diego on weekends over a six-month period ending in late September may have been exposed to tuberculosis, county health officials reported Tuesday.The Health and Human Services Agency is working with the casino to inform patrons and staff who may have been exposed between Feb. 23 and Sept. 30, said county spokesman Jose A. Alvarez.HHSA will provide testing at no cost to patrons who were potentially exposed, Alvarez said. Testing will be offered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 8 and 9 at the casino at 5526 El Cajon Blvd., he said.People who visited the casino are encouraged to contact their doctor or county TB Control if they cannot get tested on Dec. 8 or 9, Alvarez said.Beginning Tuesday, testing is also being offered to casino staff at no cost by county Occupational Health, according to HHSA officials, who noted it can take eight to 10 weeks after exposure for someone to test positive for TB.Those wanting more information may call Lucky Lady Casino at (619) 287- 6690 or the county TB Control Program (619) 692-8621.Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, said most people who are exposed do not become infected.
