SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of Black student leaders from Poway Unified School District schools met last week with administrators, principals and counselors to discuss ways to address issues of racism and inequality in the district.The students are the presidents of the Black Student Unions at each of PUSD's five high schools.It was the first meeting since the student leaders sent an email asking to see changes in the district to improve the lives of students of color."Making PUSD not just not racist but transparently anti-racist," said Jade Thompson, president of the BSU at Rancho Bernardo High School.Thompason helped write the email, which also talked about the recently created Instagram account "Black in PUSD,” which anonymously details students' experiences with racism."We just think it was a great way to open up people's eyes cause people like to say not in this community," said Thompson.Superintendent Dr. Kim Phelps agrees, saying, "To hold people accountable, including the district and our teachers and everybody ... I'm proud of our students for doing that.”Phelps and Thompson both described the meeting as productive and positive.Among the issues discussed were student education and assemblies addressing racism. The district is also committing to more diverse hiring and curriculum."It's upon us to try to do better; we have a lot of work to do and we want to do better so it’s a growing and learning opportunity for all of us," said Phelps.The students and administrators also talked about the consequences for racism-related incidents.Students said they'd like to see a form of restorative justice instead of just punishment.Although both students and staff agree there's a lot more to be done, they also say the first step is recognizing the problem and starting the conversation."I have a lot of hope for the future of this year and the years to come," said Thompson. 1906

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A family escaped from a fire that erupted in the garage of their Bay Ho home late Sunday night, but the family’s pet cat did not survive.At around 11:15 p.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were called to a home in the 4800 block of Hidalgo Avenue in response to a fire at a two-story home.Firefighters knocked down the flames and kept the fire contained to the garage, but there was smoke damage throughout the home, SDFD spokesperson Monica Munoz said. A time of knockdown was not available.The family of five made it out of the home safely, but ABC 10News learned the family’s cat was overcome by smoke and later passed away.The American Red Cross was called to help the displaced residents arrange for temporary lodging. The blaze caused an estimated 0,000 in damage to the structure and an estimated 0,000 in damage to its contents, Munoz said.The cause of the blaze is under investigation.City News Service contributed to this report 969

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 74-year-old woman was pinned between a U-Haul van and a retaining wall after chasing after the runaway van in Valencia Park.After exiting the van Saturday at about 7:30 a.m., the woman failed to set the parking brake, San Diego Police said. As the van started rolling northbound on Valencia Parkway, the woman gave chase.She was re-entering the vehicle when it veered to the left, struck a fire hydrant, a retaining wall, and another vehicle, police say, pinning the woman between the van and the wall.The woman suffered non life-threatening injuries, including a fractured pelvis.SDPD Traffic Officers were investigating the incident Saturday. 673

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Barrio Logan business is on a mission to help students become the first in their family to go to college. Called the Barrio Logan College Institute, the business helps kids learn how to get into college. The program began in 1996 and helps students from third grade all the way through college. So far, 204 students have participated in the program. The programs offered are free, but parents are required to donate their time. The business began out of the need to help students in underserved communities. According to the institute, only three percent of adults age 25 and older in Barrio Logan have a bachelor’s degree. The institute also says only 38 percent of those 25 and older in the community have a high school diploma. Through the institute, many students have been able to go on to attend college. 88 percent of students who have gone through the Barrio Logan College Institute’s College Success Program remain in college working toward a degree. For now, the institute is focused on moving to a new location within the Barrio Logan Community, so far raising .1 million of the needed .5 million to buy the building. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two community boards that review police practices will hold emergency meetings Wednesday and Thursday regarding the San Diego Police Department's de-escalation-of-force policies.The city's Citizens Advisory Board on Police/Community Relations will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a Thursday evening meeting of the Community Review Board on Police Practices, both of which can be viewed on the city's website and YouTube page.San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said the goal of both meetings is to "take a serious look at de-escalation recommendations that could be implemented by our department" and "increasing and facilitating further dialogue and understanding between our officers, our men and women who are out there protecting us, and the community."Faulconer said public input is welcome regarding what SDPD policies should be updated or changed."Many are crying out to be heard. We are listening," Faulconer said. "Your city is listening. Now we want to turn those words into actions."The meetings will be held amid protests against police brutality staged in San Diego and elsewhere across the country, and follow Monday's announcement by the SDPD that it is banning the use of the carotid restraint technique.While the protests occurring both locally and nationwide were triggered by the Memorial Day death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, some have accused local law enforcement of escalating violence during protests in San Diego and La Mesa through the use of tear gas and bean bag rounds to disperse crowds.During a Monday news conference outside the County Administration Center, community leaders said weekend protests in San Diego and La Mesa were peaceful until officers clad in tactical gear crowded protesters, then fired non-lethal ammunition toward the protest groups.Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, chair of the San Diego County Democratic Party, said San Diego police caused "the panic that led to the escalation of violence" on Sunday by boxing in the crowd in downtown San Diego."How many of y'all think marching troops towards a contained space is de-escalation?" he asked.Local activist Tasha Williamson criticized law enforcement who responded to Saturday's protest in La Mesa, during which protester Leslie Furcron was shot in the head with a projectile, allegedly by a police officer.Furcron's family held a news conference outside La Mesa City Hall Tuesday afternoon to call for the officer involved to be fired and criminally charged. 2487
