We all know we could be scammed and these days it’s becoming harder and harder to tell what’s legitimate and what’s not. Phishing attack are not only increasing, they’re getting more sophisticated. Here are the main ways scammers are targeting you and what you can do to beat them at their own game.It all starts in your inbox with your email. It’s the easiest way for scammers to strike. They’re phishing for your personal info and their bait is pretty convincing.Girbin Klein is a senior security analyst and said, “These are the types that people will get into their email inbox typically that claim to be from Apple, claim to be from American Express, whatever company or bank people might be associated with."Scammers are getting more sophisticated with how they approach us. "It's claiming that you know you've won something or your accounts are being closed down because there's been some weird activity with your account," Klein added. "I mean those are the types of emails that get people's attention."Right now, fake Netflix emails are circulating. The email asks you to verify your billing information by clicking on the link. It even gives you a separate link to visit the help center. There’s also a fake email being sent out that’s claiming it’s from Apple. Recent research suggests one in four emails is trying to get your Apple ID, making it the top target of hackers. If you receive one of these emails, here’s what you should do. Never click on the link. That’s what scammers use to steal your information. Instead, if you’re really concerned, go to the company's website on your own and check things out. You can also try hovering your cursor over a link to see where it directs you, but there’s now new software that doesn’t always show you that. Finally, look at the email sender’s address. Who sent it? Are there inconsistencies? Sometimes it looks like it’s from a family member, friend or company you know, but the address doesn’t match up.Remember, just because they’re phishing doesn’t mean we have to take the bait. Something else to keep in mind is your bank will never send a generic email requesting personal information be sent back to it. Make sure you check your online accounts frequently and to install firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware in your computer. 2308
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Department of Homeland Security has asked the military to provide more help securing the U.S.-Mexico border, two defense officials said Friday amid a political standoff over President Donald Trump's demand for more money to build a border wall. The acting secretary of defense, Pat Shanahan, has not decided how to respond to the DHS request, but in the past the Pentagon has provided help when asked. At one point last fall there were nearly 5,900 active-duty troops along the border in Texas, Arizona and California to assist border patrol agents and to erect wire barriers. That number now is about 2,350.The defense officials said DHS asked for certain military capabilities, not any number of troops. It will be up to Shanahan to decide whether more active-duty troops are dispatched. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the request for assistance has not yet been fully processed. One of the officials said DHS wants the military to put up concertina wire as barriers along 160 miles of border. That would be in addition to 70 miles of concertina wire that combat engineers put up last fall. If the new work is taken on by the military, it might require an extension of the current deployment beyond its scheduled end Jan. 31. The official said DHS did not specifically ask for an extension, but it has not been ruled out.The troops have been erecting and reinforcing border barriers but are not performing law enforcement tasks or engaging with migrants. Some also have been providing transportation and logistical help as well as medical assistance to troops and to Customs and Border Protection personnel along the border. Many in Congress, including leading Democrats, have criticized the troop deployments as a waste of money and a misuse of military resources.Separately, there are about 2,200 National Guard troops deployed along the border. It is possible that some of those, or additional deployments of National Guard personnel, could be used to perform some of the work requested by DHS. 2049

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has ruled that Oklahoma prosecutors lack the authority to pursue criminal cases in a large chunk of eastern Oklahoma that remains an American Indian reservation. The court’s ruling casts doubt on hundreds of convictions won by local prosecutors. The case was argued by telephone in May because of the coronavirus pandemic. The case revolved around an appeal by a Native American man who claimed state courts had no authority to try him for a crime committed on reservation land that belongs to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. The reservation once encompassed 3 million acres, including most of Tulsa, the state’s second-largest city. 670
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon has ordered the military's independent newspaper, Stars and Stripes, to cease publication at the end of the month. The plan includes closing all of its offices worldwide. This is despite congressional efforts to continue funding the century-old publication. On Wednesday, at least 15 US senators sent a letter to Defense Secretary Mark Esper protesting the move.“Stars and Stripes is an essential part of our nation’s freedom of the press that serves the very population charged with defending that freedom,” the lawmakers said. “Therefore, we respectfully request that you rescind your decision to discontinue support for Stars and Stripes and that you reinstate the funding necessary for it to continue operations.” 755
