Ever since their older brother competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee years ago, twin brothers Garrett and Pierce Bryner have dreamed of making it to the bee — together.This year, they’ll see that dream become reality. “It’s kind of historical, I guess you’d say,” said Garrett, who made it to the national bee — without his brother — last year.Previously, twins would never have been able to make it to the bee together, as one would have always beaten the other out. But thanks to new qualifying rules put in place this year which incorporate a point system, two sets of twins are now going to be on the national stage for the first time in the spelling bee's 91-year history: the Bryner twins, and another set of twins from Mississippi.Garrett’s brother Pierce will become the third sibling in the Bryner family to attend the bee.Their mom, Liz Bryner, who has shepherded her kids through her share of bees, says that while the two will be nervous, for the parents, its on a whole other level.“I think nothing compared to the Bee in terms of the stress level,” Liz said from her home in Utah. “If you look around at the parents they’re often more nervous than the kids. I think it’s really a nail-biting experience.”Garret and Pierce say they can be competitive when it comes to studying. "Sometimes the other one jumps in tries to spell the word before the other one,” Pierce said. Ultimately they hope for the best for each other.“I just cheer him on,” Pierce said.They’ve been studying as much as they can, Liz said, but as eighth grade boys, surrounded by the rugged landscape of Utah, their attention span only lasts so long before they want to get back outside and hop on their bikes.“I don’t think we’ve ever gone longer than probably 90 minutes at a time,” she said. “That’s about as long as anyone’s been willing to do.”“To know that they can both understand what it’s like to be there at the national bee to compete, and it’ll be something they share,” she said. “The fact that they can share this experience is just incredible as a mom.”ESPN, which broadcasts the bee, has seen viewership numbers for the annual contest that have hovered around one million people. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — Cardiff Elementary School in Encinitas must pay 0,000 just so it can resume a project to modernize its campus.The payment is part of a settlement to a group that sued the district over a project to rebuild much of the school, which had upwards of 60-year-old buildings.In 2016, voters approved a million bond measure authorizing the project. The group that sued, Save the Park and Build the School, challenged the plan's environmental impact report and its plan to build a multipurpose facility on part of a grassy area of district property that doubles as a public park in off hours. Late last year, a judge ruled in the group's favor and issued an order to halt work on the project. This week, the school and the group reached a settlement to allow campus construction to resume, and put the multipurpose center back into a federal approval process because it involves the National Park Service. The group got 0,000 for legal fees. "It was a flex and it cost our kids and the taxpayers 0,000 to bring us right back to where we were in December," said Morgan Gates, a parent at the school. Eleanor Musick, who heads the group, said the park is cherished and one of the only open spaces nearby. "It was not that we intended to stop the construction specifically to spite them or anything like that, That's the law. If a project is out of compliance with [The California Environment Quality Act] it must stop," Musick said. Father and son stories aren't supposed to look like this."I was praying for my friends and family to be OK," said Braden Freidkes, a freshman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. He was inside the school when a gunman started shooting.Braden eventually made it out and into his parents' arms. They had been trying to reach him repeatedly and up until that point had feared the worst. "We were one of the lucky ones. (KGTV) — A 19-year-old’s call for help on social media after experiencing homelessness ended with an overwhelming amount of support from the community.Caleb Dershem recently moved to Escondido from Ohio in March.“I wanted to get more experience, try new things,” he said.He had a job driving for DoorDash and a roof over his head, but after some struggles, he ended up without a home in June, sleeping in his car.The car that became his shelter was stolen last week. In need of a place to rest his head, Dershem took to Facebook to post in the Escondido Friends group.“My car I have been sleeping in has been stolen, and I need a place to stay for the night while I wait till morning for the shelter resources to open. If anyone knows any safe places, let me know, please. I’m 19 and from Ohio,” he wrote.Moments later, dozens of North County residents reached out to Dershem offering advice."It's overwhelming to find out how many good people are actually out there," he said. "All I asked for was a place to stay for the night."There was one stranger, a man named Mike Shaw, who would answer Dershem’s call for help.“Our goal is to get some information from him, find out where he is, find out briefly what’s going on,” said Shaw. “And we put him in a hotel.”But the help didn’t end there. Shaw is the Executive Director of Southern California Youth Emergency Services, or SoCalYes.The nonprofit provides help for youth in situations like Dershem’s.“We focus on street outreach and education, focusing on youth that are 12 to 24 years old on the streets homeless,” he explained.Less than a week later, Shaw helped Dershem secure a one-bedroom apartment, next they’re working on full-time employment and replacing his stolen car.“Get him stable, get him some counseling, get him a vehicle and get him employed,” said Shaw speaking of the next steps. “Make him a productive member of our society and our community.”Dershem said he's ready to get back on track.“Mike’s been great to me, helping me with a plan to get myself together, and I appreciate him a lot,” said Dershem.It was an act of kindness that possibly changed Dershem’s life. Shaw wants other young people in situations like Dershem’s to know that resources are available at SoCalYes.“It was like a breath of fresh air, but it was new air, it wasn’t the air I was breathing before,” said Dershem.After overwhelming support from the community asking how they can help Dershem, Shaw started a GoFundMe page for those who would like to donate. 2529
