(KGTV) - The VA San Diego Healthcare System began distributing its first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine Tuesday, Dec. 22.The VA received 2,800 doses of the Moderna vaccine, which is enough for their whole staff and everyone on their priority list. The first people to get the vaccine were people who either work or live in nursing care facilities and also people in the spinal chord injury unit. The VA anticipated being able to get all of those people vaccinated in the first day.Next for the VA are people in the ICU, emergency departments and those directly caring for coronavirus patients. It was estimated that all of those people should be vaccinated in the first day or two.Doctor Robert M. Smith is the director of VA San Diego Healthcare System and said their priority is getting people vaccinated quickly. He said they do not plan on saving any of the doses that are needed for a second vaccine 28 days after the first is injected. Rather, they will rely on the chain of command to get them those second doses in a timely manner, vaccinating as many people as they can in the meantime.“We and the rest of San Diego are seeing a huge increase in the number of COVID patients right now and it’s really straining resources so we need to make sure our staff can stay well so they can provide that care,” said Smith.Smith said they are starting with giving out 300 doses per day, hoping to be able to give up to 600 doses per day eventually. Once all staff are vaccinated in the next few weeks, the focus will be on the community and the 120,000 eligible veterans who are covered by the VA.He advised veterans in the community to not reach out to the VA, saying at first, the VA will be prioritizing some veterans and contacting those who are eligible, then eventually the VA will be more flexible with allowing other veterans to walk in and get the vaccine. 1888

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— The City of San Diego announced Friday it would be shutting down its reservoirs an additional weekday each month in response to a 3 percent citywide budget cut.10News heard complaints from Steve Gordenker and his buddies, all regulars at El Capitan Reservoir. “The summer months, I am here Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, every weekend,” Gordenker said. As competitive freestyle jet skiers, El Capitan is their home turf.“More time on the water equals results,” Gordenker said. When the City of San Diego announced it would be closing El Capitan on the first Friday of every month, they were devastated. “If we are not able to come on Fridays, then that limits us to two days a week,” Gordenker said. “And the problem is this is our only freshwater lake in San Diego County.”Their only other option is to visit San Diego Bay. Gordenker said salt water is much harsher on their jet skis and makes it costly to maintain. That is why they chose to practice at the freshwater reservoir.El Capitan is one of eight city-operated reservoirs that will be closed an additional weekday, starting July 1.The closures are as follows:Barrett – Closed the first Wednesday of each month.El Capitan – Closed the first Friday of each month (starting August 1, 2019)Hodges – Closed the third Wednesday of each month.Miramar – Closed the first Tuesday of each month.Murray – Closed the second Tuesday of each month.Otay, Lower and Upper – Closed the second Wednesday of each month.San Vicente – Closed the second Friday of each month.Sutherland – Closed the third Friday of each month.“It doesn’t even really make any sense,” El Capitan concessions manager Stacy Foster said.Foster works for an independent contractor, Rocky Mountain Recreation. They provide concessions for most of the city’s reservoirs. If the lakes close, Foster doesn’t get paid. “If they still have to pay the city workers and they are losing the revenue of the people that are coming in, they are not saving any money. They are losing money,” Foster said. According to a city spokesman, maintenance and water staff will keep their hours because their duties fall under a separate budget. However, recreation-related workers will be affected by the closures because their duties fall under the 3 percent general fund budget cuts.Out of the eight reservoirs, El Capitan is the only one to close starting in August.“It is going to start in July for the other lakes, but here we were able to push it to August because it’s Fourth of July weekend,” said Foster.Foster said their lake keeper was able to negotiate the start date since the closure would have fallen under one of the busiest weekends of the year. Still, she is worried that the sudden change in schedule will inconvenience regulars. “When they have a truck and a trailer with a boat on it, there is no place for them to turn around back there, so it is going to be a mess,” Foster said, pointing toward the gate.As for Gordenker, he said he is disappointed. But he said it could be worse. “They could turn the whole program off if they wanted, so we are fortunate to at least have two days.”The closures are in effect for the next year. 3174

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 64-year-old man is recovering after he was beaten in Kearny Mesa by a group of street racers so severely he had a brain bleed and fractured disk. "I felt my RV jostling around, like maybe they were standing on my bumper, so I got out and went around back to look and I look up and someone's standing on my RV," said the victim, who did not wish to be identified.Police said the beating happened on June 28 around 9:30 p.m. A group of street racers arrived in the area for an apparent “meet up” and gathered into a large group. Multiple vehicles arrived at the location and began doing “burn-outs” in the street. Some members of the group climbed on top of the victim’s RV. When the victim walked out of his vehicle to confront them, three of the men attacked him. Another man stole the man's phone from his pocket as he was lying on the ground unconscious. "The last thing I remember is one of his buddies jumping out and I don’t know what happened after that; I probably got hit from behind."The suspects fled the area in a grey, possibly 2003 Audi A4 sedan. The man was left lying in the street. Employees from a nearby business ran out to help him and called an ambulance. San Diego County Crime Stoppers along with investigators from the San Diego Police Department’s Eastern Division are asking for the public’s help in identifying and locating the attackers. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Family members have identified three of the four teens involved in a deadly accident in Mt Hope.Three teens died at the scene, a fourth is in ICU at the hospital.Dwayne Heard is Dashaun Heard’s father, one of the teens that did not survive the crash. Dashaun was just 17-years-old. Heard says his family is still in disbelief about what happened, saying his son was a good kid that was outgoing and enjoyed being with his friends.Rose Monta?o is the mom of two of the teens in the car, 17-year-old Daniel and 15-year-old Julian Monta?o. Daniel did not survive the crash. Julian is in ICU and doctors had to amputate one of his legs.Monta?o says her son Daniel had a loving heart, was positive and enthusiastic about life.Both Heard and Monta?o say they still have many questions about what happened that night.The crash happened around 11 p.m. Tuesday night. Police say an officer ran the car’s plates and noticed it was reported stolen. SDPD says the driver ran a red light, refusing to pull over. According to police, the officer lost sight of the car, but the helicopter followed. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - California Gov. Gavin Newsom said indoor operations must close in the state, so some businesses like gyms and restaurants are moving outside. For the beauty industry, there’s a divide. While Newsom and San Diego County officials said businesses can move outside, the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology won’t allow it.Bahar Radman is a stylist at Del Beauty Box and said she already started cutting hair in her salon’s parking lot. She said it works because there is more space to spread out, there is better airflow, she already has the cosmetology training on best hygiene practices, and she’s also taking coronavirus safety precautions, like keeping a mask on the whole time. She said of her first three outdoor clients, all were happy with the setup and already booked return appointments.This goes against the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology rules, though. In a statement, a spokesperson from the Department of Consumer Affairs said, “The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology understands the effect shutdowns have on businesses and is sensitive to that. As it stands at this moment, under current laws and regulations, the services cannot be performed outside.
