SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The H1N1 strain of influenza is the most prominent strain of the illness in San Diego and around the nation so far this flu season, according to local health officials.Of 1,730 confirmed cases reported in San Diego this season, nearly 94 percent are influenza A, the County Health and Human Services Agency reported Wednesday. Influenza A covers H1N1 and H3N2. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention believes this is because older adults have been exposed more to H1N1 and younger adults tend to have lower vaccination rates."Older people have some element of immunity to Pandemic H1N1 because they’ve had more exposure to these influenza viruses than younger groups," said Sayone Thihalolipavan, county deputy public health officer, said.Last week, a 26-year-old woman visiting San Diego from Washington, D.C., died possibly due to H1N1 complications. She was also suffering from meningitis, though it's unclear if she had been vaccinated or suffered from any other underlying medical conditions.Another local resident, identified as a 49-year-old male, died of the flu, according to health officials. That man did have underlying medical conditions though it wasn't clear if he had been vaccinated.This season, there have been nine flu-related deaths, officials say, compared to 44 deaths at this time last season.Health officials advise the best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated, wash hands thoroughly and often, avoid going out if you're sick, and clean commonly touched services. Those with underlying chronic conditions, pregnant women, people who live with or care for others who are high risk, and those 65 and older are most at risk of catching the flu. 2041

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The city of San Diego may turn to homeowners to help chip away at the housing crisis.On Wednesday, the San Diego Housing Commission floated the idea of offering loans to homeowners in the city to build backyard granny flats to be rented out as affordable housing. The plan could help homeowners pay their mortgage while also providing more low-income units to those who qualify. Councilmembers on the committee appeared to be in support of the idea. The city would take a cut of the rent for about ten years before the homeowner gets it outright. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ten people were arrested in a suspected smuggling incident after border officials stopped a boat off the coast of Coronado this week.U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine agents say a boat was spotted just west of Coronado at about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Agents said the vessel was traveling from Mexican waters into U.S. territory.A crew was sent out to stop the suspected smuggling boat and 10 people were found aboard. The boat had been traveling without lights on and was spray painted black, according to agents.The individuals on the boat, all male Mexican citizens ages 18 to 55, were taken back to shore and turned over to Border Patrol, CBP said."It’s dangerous to travel on a crowded boat, out at sea, with no lights, and these smugglers took the added step of spray-painting the hull black so they would be difficult to spot at night," said Christopher Hunter, Deputy Director of Marine Operations for CBP in San Diego. "Smuggling organizations aren’t considering anyone’s safety when these make these illegal attempts, only what profits they can try to make."The 10 men were due to be returned to Mexico, CBP said. 1166

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Surveillance video shows a couple at a Kearny Mesa home, targeting an American flag.John Dodds bought his flag two years ago and displayed it with a light outside his home on Atlas Street."My father was a Navy veteran, my brother was very patriotic and instilled it within me," Dodds said. "I want everyone to know how much I appreciate this country and what the veterans of this country do for us."A flag typically flies in front of Dodd's home 365 days a year. On Thursday morning, Dodds walked outside and saw the empty flag holder, before reviewing his surveillance video.Around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night, two people with backpacks - bandanas on their faces -  walked by. One of them walked up to his porch and yanked out the flag before she took off. Dodds posted the video on the Nextdoor app in hopes of tracking down those thieves - and his flag.        "Maybe it was a big joke to them, but I don't think they know how seriously most of us take the flag of the United States of America," he said. Dodds plans on getting another flag but is still holding out hope for it to be returned. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The family of the man killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 5 Monday morning says the California Highway Patrol got it wrong. According to them, their brother - Justin Callahan - was a driver, but not the driver who caused the crash. RELATED: Driver killed, 2 hurt in wrong-way crash on I-5On Monday CHP told 10News the following: Just before 2 a.m. Monday, a Volkswagon Jetta was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Inerstate 8 from Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. As CHP officers responded, the Jetta entered the northbound Interstate 5 transition ramp to the westbound I-8 in the wrong direction and collided head-on with a Toyota Camry.An SUV then crashed into the back of the Camry, the CHP said.The driver of the Jetta was 35-year-old Justin Callahan, who was declared dead at the scene. Justin's family says he usually drives home from work at the time and would have been traveling in the opposite direction - from Chula Vista to his home in Ocean Beach. Based on that information, they tell 10News the CHP's report just doesn't add up. "It doesn't make any sense," his brother, Tommy Villafranca, said.  "Why would he get back on the freeway and get back the opposite direction?"And if Callahan did turn around and got back on the freeway, the timing doesn't add up,  his brother said.  He says his work caught on security video leaving at 1:38 a.m. and the crash happened less than 20 minutes later."It takes 21 minutes just to get from his work to Sunset Cliffs Boulevard," Villafranca said.   "He’s still got to turn around go back, and that would take even more time, so the timeline is not working at all."The family has created a GoFundMe to help them pay for arrangements necessary to get Callahan back to Wheatland, California and arrange a funeral. "Justin was an artist and an inspiration to the people around him," James O'Callahan wrote on the GoFundMe page. "At this point I am too broken up inside to write anything worth reading.
