SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thirty years ago, Officer Brian Hardy had an idea. Hardy told his chief, "Chief, I have this crazy idea. Let's put teddy bears in a police car and bring them up to Children's Hospital. I think the kids would really get a kick out of it."Hardy was just a few years into being a member of the Coronado Police Department. He got the idea when, during a visit to Rady Children's Hospital, he noticed the toy collection bin."I asked the nurse at the station there why are there so few toys and she said donations are way down this year. We don't have a lot of toys for the kids in the hospital," said Hardy.Hardy bought the first twelve bears himself. Then, the teddy bear drive started to spread to other law enforcement departments across the county.They have collected as many as 75,000 teddy bears and a huge caravan delivers bears to Rady Children's Hospital every December.Hardy said he'll never forget the impact bringing a little joy to one terminally ill child had on his fellow officers."This little girl was maybe 4, 5 years old and all those cops walked out of there crying their eyes out," said Hardy.A few years later, Hardy found himself on the other side of things when a doctor at Rady told him his 2-year-old daughter's appendix had burst."He said my daughter's very sick she may not make it till morning, but he says, 'We're going to do our best to save her life,'" said Hardy.They did and it happened to be the morning of the teddy bear caravan.Hardy remembered, "It was like an episode of the 'Twilight Zone.' Things were turned around and I was in the hospital and the cops were coming with teddy bears."Hardy has received many thank you notes over the years, but it's what one girl told him a few years ago that has stayed with him."She comes running up full clip and she says, 'You gave me a teddy bear when I was 5 years old,'" Hardy said. He said the young woman now in her 20s told him, "I never forgot that." Now, because of the pandemic, instead of collecting piles of bears, they are encouraging people to donate money to buy bears that go directly to the kids.Officer Hardy is retired now, but still involved and has this message for the many generous donors."If you could see what we see, these children just light up when you bring them these bears," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- There are more concerns about vacation rentals in the Bankers Hill area, following action taken by the City Attorney’s office to shut down what they called a COVID party Airbnb on 2nd Avenue.The civil enforcement action cited concerns over gatherings during coronavirus-related restrictions and numerous other violations, from lack of permits to not obtaining proper tax licenses. According to the complaint the homeowner David Contreras Curiel, did not pay required taxes or fees to operate a vacation rental. It also alleges Curiel illegally made numerous renovations to the home.“From packing a party house during a pandemic to illegally renovating an entire property, the conduct of the defendants in this case is egregious and unacceptable,” City Attorney Mara Elliott said in a news release Friday.On Monday, ABC 10News spoke to a neighbor who lives next to another Airbnb rental on 3rd Avenue. Records show the rental is also owned by David Curiel. The home is listed as The Alfred Mansion on Airbnb’s website.“It’s disruptive every weekend,” one neighbor told ABC 10News. He did not want to be identified, but he said the parties picked up at The Alfred Mansion a few months ago.“Two weekends ago, there was a wedding there with at least 40 people. Nobody had a mask on,” the neighbor said. He added that he has made several complaints to police and the City of San Diego, but nothing had been done. He also had not heard anything from Airbnb regarding his concerns.Curiel did not return requests for comment. Early Monday afternoon, ABC 10News contacted Alex Mendez, the person who helps manage the property and deal with guests.On Monday evening, Mendez called the allegations against the Airbnb properties “unwarranted.”Regarding the city action taken against The Ashley, Mendez said that he and the owner were willing to work with the city. When he asked to reschedule a meeting with code enforcement a couple months ago due to Curiel’s travels, Mendez said the city was not willing to be flexible.Instead of a code enforcement officer calling him back, someone from the City Attorney’s office contacted him, Mendez said.He and Curiel were both caught off guard by the city’s allegations.“We, by no means, have a party house. The house rules are very strict,” Mendez said.Mendez said he has been willing to work with any neighbors who have had issues with the Airbnb properties. “We’re very responsible,” he said, adding that it is also not fair for “neighbors to complain any time there’s any little noise and mischaracterize it.”A spokesperson for the City Attorney’s office could not say whether or not the property on 3rd Avenue was being investigated, but told ABC 10News that the case against The Ashley could affect the other rentals owned by Curiel.“If granted, our injunctive relief would apply to any properties within the county owned by Mr. Curiel that have one or more of the same-type violations that are listed in our complaint,” a spokesperson said.Airbnb has not responded to this latest allegation, but previously told ABC 10News that hosts are not allowed to authorize parties where current public health orders prohibit gatherings, like in San Diego County. 3217

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The oldest San Diego women's choir is scrambling to raise funds for a last-second trip to sing at the Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony. The Choral Club of San Diego dazzled crowds from veterans homes to Spreckles Organ Pavillion. They've been singing since 1939."It was a very private women's group. They all got together in their homes and they had tea," Executive Director Caron Andregg said, painting the picture of what the club looked like back then. In 2012, they officially became a 501(c)(3) non-profit and over the past five years they've been tuning to a more modern note."We've filtered out a lot of the older traditional music and we started filtering in more modern music," Andregg said.She said the crowds have loved it and they've ran with it, gaining notoriety and ultimately an invite to the Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony. Andregg added someone personally recommended the club to the organizers of the event on Honolulu."Getting 25 ladies to Hawaii is no small task," Music Director Kyle Adam Blair said. The group has been frantically making calls for two weeks, but are not gaining any traction."I can't even get people to pick up their phones ... That's why we're panicking and asking you for help," Andregg said.The club is stepping in after an East Coast choir suffered a misfortune and couldn't perform.Andregg said they are honored for the opportunity to be the only vocal ensemble."We're from a Navy town and we have a relationship with the Midway and we have relationships with other Naval outlets, we've performed for Naval ceremonies," she said.The group needs to raise ,000 in a month so they can book the flights and lodging for the choir members. 1706
