Feeding America, a network of 200 food banks across the United States, expressed concern on Wednesday on pending legislation that could strip food stamps from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program away from nearly 3 million Americans. House Resolution No. 2 is up for consideration by the House of Representatives, which would add employment stipulations to some food stamp recipients, and their families. Feeding America's primary concern is that the nation's food banks will not be able to handle increased demand if the legislation becomes law. "Feeding America's nationwide network of member food banks will not be able to make up for the lost meals," Feeding America said in a statement. "We urge lawmakers in the House to reconsider their approach and amend their legislation before sending it to the Senate to ensure that the final legislation does not take food off the table for families who need it."According to a Congressional Budget Office projection, the federal government would reduce spending on direct benefits by .2 billion from 2019 to 2028. But the CBO claims it would cost the federal government in additional .7 billion in administrative costs to enforce the employment requirement. Overall, the federal government would be projected to save .5 billion over the 10-year period if the employment requirement is enacted. The CBO said that beginning in 2021, food stamp recipients between the ages of 18 and 59 who are neither disabled nor caring for a child under the age of 6 would need to either work or participate in a training program for 20 hours each week; that requirement would increase to 25 hours each week in 2026.The push to add work requirements to those receiving government assistance got a boost last month when President Donald Trump signed an executive order, which was intended to reduce poverty. "As part of our pledge to increase opportunities for those in need, the Federal Government must first enforce work requirements that are required by law," the executive order, signed by Trump on April 10, reads. "It must also strengthen requirements that promote obtaining and maintaining employment in order to move people to independence."Spending on food stamps is part of a larger "Farm Bill" legislation. The total cost for the Farm Bill is 7 billion from 2019 to 2028. Former Michigan State University women's gymnastics coach Kathie Klages was charged Thursday with two counts of lying to a peace officer in connection to the investigation into the school's handling of Larry Nassar's sexual abuse at the school, according to the Michigan Attorney General's office."While investigating how Larry Nassar was able to get away with sexually assaulting hundreds of individuals on and off Michigan State's campus, Klages denied to Michigan State Police detectives having been told prior to 2016 of Nassar's sexual misconduct," the release said."Witnesses have said that they reported Nassar's sexual abuse to Klages dating back more than 20 years."The charges are for both a felony and a misdemeanor, the release said. The arrest warrant was approved Thursday morning and Klages is required to turn herself in to Lansing Police by the weekend, according to Michigan Attorney General spokeswoman Andrea Bitely.Klages was the women's gymnastics coach when Nassar, a prominent team doctor for MSU and USA Gymnastics, sexually abused hundreds of girls and women for decades under the guise of providing medical treatment.Nassar pleaded guilty last year to state charges of criminal sexual conduct and federal charges of child pornography. As part of his plea deal, Michigan courts allowed any and all of his victims to speak to him and put their experience in the public record.Nearly 200 girls and women -- an "army of survivors," as they said -- came forward to describe harrowing tales of Nassar's abuse and to take on his system of enablers at Michigan State, USA Gymnastics and the US Olympic Committee.Klages, who retired in 2017, was one person named in the hearings. Food insecurity has skyrocketed in communities across the country during the pandemic. Rural communities have been hit especially hard. In Louisiana, which the highest-ranked state for food insecurity for children and the fourth-ranked state in food insecurity for seniors, food banks are becoming more important than ever before.For grandmother Mary O'Neal, she's raising her 8-year-old grandson on her own. Without help from her local food bank, she said she doesn't know how they would get by.Her husband passed away a couple of years ago, which cut their fixed income in half. Since then, O'Neal said she's really had to save."I had to pick up, and we had to start doing things different," said O'Neal. That loss was made worse when a tornado ripped through their northeast Louisiana home."I said, 'You know, Lord, you’ve sent me through the biggest storm of my life. This is just another storm. You brought me through the other one, and you’re going to bring me through this one,'" she said.But O'Neal said she never imagined the storm coronavirus would bring right into her kitchen. Food was running short—not only for her, but for her diabetic grandson, so she visited The Care and Hope Ministry, a small church turned community food bank, for some help."For us, it’s more than just than a box of food," said Pam Walker, who runs the food distribution. "It’s relationships, it’s loving on people, it’s hope, hope in a time of despair."Hope is just what O'Neal needed, especially after her grandson's school, and several in the area, stopped sending home-packed lunches while students were doing remote learning."That was all cut out the last of June. They didn’t give any more lunches," said O'Neal.
