BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama, on Wednesday discussed bilateral relations and the A/H1N1 flu epidemic during a telephone conversation.     Hu recalled that during their meeting at the Group of 20 summit in London in early April, he and Obama agreed to work together to build a positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship in the 21st century.     The two leaders also reached extensive consensus on the establishment of the mechanism of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogues, joint efforts to tackle the international financial crisis, and enhanced coordination and cooperation on major global and regional issues, Hu said.     "Now, both countries are seriously implementing the consensus," the Chinese president said.     "China is willing to work with the United States to push for a healthy and stable development of China-U.S. relations," he said.     Obama, for his part, said the meeting with Hu was important because it outlined the future development of bilateral cooperation and made a good start on the China-U.S. strategic dialogue.     The United States appreciated China's efforts to promote bilateral relations, he said.     The Chinese president expressed sincere condolences over the A/H1N1 flu epidemic that has hit parts of the United States, and said the Chinese government has started emergency measures to prevent a spread of the disease.     "We are willing to keep contact with the World Health Organization, the United States and other parties concerned, and strengthen cooperation to jointly confront this public health challenge," Hu said.     Obama said his country has adopted effective measures against the disease and will continue to keep a close eye on the outbreak.     The U.S. president said he was looking forward to meeting with Hu again during a meeting of leaders of the Group of Eight nations and developing countries in Italy. Obama said he was also looking forward to visiting China.     The two leaders also exchanged views on such issues as the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the situation in South Asia.

BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The Bank of China (BOC), China's largest foreign exchange bank, will transact the first cross-border yuan trade settlement deal Monday, a source with the bank said Sunday night.     The BOC Shanghai branch would receive the first cross-border yuan trade settlement deal from the BOC (Hong Kong) Monday, the unidentified source said.     The payee would be Shanghai Electric International Economic and Trading Co., Ltd. under Shanghai Electric Group Co., Ltd. and the remitter would be the company's business partner in Hong Kong.     China last week issued detailed measures to regulate the pilot program for cross-border trade settled in yuan. The rules specified how to make transactions using Renminbi (RMB) to settle trade with Hong Kong and Macao and regional trade partners.     "The service has drawn much attention and many overseas enterprises had been asking us about it months ago. Why? Because cross-border yuan trade settlement could help enterprises avoid exchange rates risks, lock up financial costs and reckon enterprise anticipated profits," the source said.     "In comparison to convertible currency settlement, it could streamline links and reduce trade cost. It could help enterprises without foreign exchange revenues cut losses from converting foreign exchanges. It could reduce derivative fees in selecting RMB financial products," said the source.     The BOC Shanghai branch has reached tentative agreements with 11 overseas agent banks on yuan trade settlement deals. Now the agent banks in tentative agreements with the BOC mostly are large banks in Asia and they anticipate remarkable demand on yuan settlement, according to the sources.     "We are in talks with banks in the United States and Europe and get very positive feedbacks. GENEVA, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Close international cooperation is needed to fight all forms of racism and racial discrimination, which is the enemy of the whole human society, a senior Chinese diplomat said here on Wednesday.     "China proposes that the international community work closely together to form a strong united front in the fight against racism," said Li Baodong, Chinese ambassador to the United Nations Office in Geneva, in an address to the ongoing Durban Review Conference.     Governments should fully recognize the huge damage that racism has caused to various human rights, international security and human development, and pursue actively the policy of "zero tolerance" at both the national and international level, Li told more than 100 delegations participating at the anti-racism conference.     The five-day conference, which opened on Monday, is a follow-up meeting to the World Conference against Racism held in Durban, South Africa in 2001.     Delegates adopted by consensus a final anti-racism declaration on Tuesday despite the boycott of the meeting by quite a few Western countries, including the United States, citing concerns that the meeting could be used as a forum to criticize Israel.     The atmosphere of the conference was also damaged on Monday after dozens of European delegates walked out of the conference room in protest to a speech made by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad which likened Israel to a racist regime.     According to the Chinese ambassador, countries should enhance dialog and communications to resolve political differences and refrain from creating a breeding ground for hatred.     It's of great significance that countries have gathered once again to deliberate on the issue of racism eight years after the holding of the first UN anti-racism conference, he said.     Li also stressed the need to further enhance the effectiveness of various mechanisms established after the 2001 conference to address racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, with a view to achieving better synergy, coordination, coherence and complementarity in their work.     In addition, he suggested a renewal or reinforcement of the international definition for racism, as many new forms of racism and racial discrimination are emerging along with the current global financial, food and energy crises as well as the threat of climate change.     "The Chinese government is against all forms of racism, and it has been actively engaged in various international anti-racist activities," Li said.     "With the opportunity provided by this conference, China is ready to work will all governments and the civil society to create a world free of discrimination, hatred, fear and prejudice," he added.

ROME, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano on Monday, calling for a boost to ties between the two countries.     During the talks, Hu said Chinese-Italian relations have witnessed healthy and stable expansion over the past 39 years since the two countries established diplomatic relations. In 2004, the two countries agreed to establish an all-around strategic partnership, unveiling a new page for Chinese-Italian friendly cooperation, Hu said.     As next year will mark the 40th anniversary of the forging of bilateral diplomatic relations, China is willing to join hands with Italy to lift bilateral ties to a higher level, Hu said. He noted that China's participation is a must for the international community in its move to tackle the crisis, reform the international financial system and realize sustainable development.     On the EU-China relations, Napolitano said Italy would continue to play an active role in boosting the ties.     The president also reiterated Italy's adherence to the one-China policy.     According to the press release, Hu also briefed his Italian counterpart on the latest social and economic developments in China.     The two leaders held the talks at the Quirinal Palace, and Napolitano hosted a grand welcoming ceremony in honor of Hu prior to the talks.     Hu arrived in Rome earlier on Sunday for a state visit at the invitation of Napolitano.     Hu was also to attend the summit of the Group of Eight and major developing countries later this week in the central Italian city of L'Aquila.     This is the sixth time that the Chinese president has attended the G8 outreach session. The previous one took place in the northern Japanese resort of Toyako last July.     The G8, an informal forum of leading industrialized nations, includes Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Japan, the United States, Canada and Russia.
