The way doctors treat asthma in both children and adults just got a major update.Speaking to the Journal of the American Medical Association, respiratory experts said the changes in guidelines focus on six key areas, including improving asthma diagnosis, management, and treatment. It’s the first published update in 13 years.“So, one of the goals of our update was to address the issue of who can use intermittent inhaled corticosteroids and when used, are they as effective as daily use,” said Michelle M. Cloutier, MD with UConn Health. One of the biggest changes is that many patients may not need to use an inhaler every day anymore.“Especially those families of young children who don’t necessarily buy into using daily medication when their children are having intermittent symptoms,” said Stephanie Lovinsky-Desir, MD, MS with Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The new recommendations for inhaler use vary by age and severity of asthma, so it’s important to talk to your doctor about the new guidelines.Asthma affects nearly 5% of adults and 10% of children.During the pandemic, because of the higher death rate of asthma patients from COVID-19, more people have been seeking treatment for the condition. The average annual cost of asthma per person is more than ,200. But research has also shown among other things, regular use of medication and flu vaccines can reduce the chances of someone with asthma being hospitalized, driving up those costs. 1472

The travel industry has taken a major hit during the COVID-19 pandemic. From hotels to airlines, the industry saw a massive dip in business as people started canceling their upcoming trips. Instead, it appears people are taking their summer vacations outdoors."We had a lot of cancelations early on so starting in March, April and May we're heavily affected by cancelations but now that states are opening back up and travel’s resuming, our bookings are outpacing our cancelation seven fold," says Toby O'Rourke, the CEO of Kampgrounds of America. O'Rourke says campsite bookings and RV rentals are soaring.KOA conducted their own research and found that one-third of non-campers are considering camping as their summer travel activity. With contact-less bookings and a taste of the outdoors, she says many are finding camping a safer vacation option."We've been having a lot of activity on our campgrounds. There’s a lot of pent-up demand. We’re seeing June really take off which we’re excited to see heading into the summer months," says O'Rourke.O'Rourke adds that a majority of states have opened up their parks and campgrounds. In April, she says there was a magic date when people started booking campgrounds like crazy. Outdoorsy.com, a site that connects RV owners with people who want to rent them, says they've seen a 2,600% growth in their business since the COVID-19 pandemic began."Just last month alone, we saw over 2.5 million new visits or new users to the site Outdoorsy.com which is pretty significant. We’re breaking records all over the place in terms of bookings, growth. We had our best booking day on record last week that was up 300% year over year for just that day," says Jennifer Young, co-founder of Outdoorsy.com.Outdoorsy says recreational vehicles allow people to control their own environments."It's a standalone vehicle that you control where you buy your food, where it goes, how it stays in your refrigerator. Same with your bathrooms. So you’re cleaning and washing and showering - it's all self-contained in where you want to stay. You pick your location and destination," says Young.Plus both Outdoorsy and KOA have developed new safety guidance for campgrounds and RV renters amid COVID-19 which include proper sanitation, personal protective equipment and more."I definitely think once somebody rents an outdoorsy vehicle or camper van I’m pretty sure they’ll be hooked," says Young.KOA's O'Rourke advises people to first check camping websites and book ahead whenever possible. Helping people social distance while still leaving their house for a vacation. 2605

The so-called cone of uncertainty for Tropical Storm Jose now includes North Carolina's Outer Banks, Maryland and Delaware, after the National Hurricane Center on Thursday shifted its potential path west. The cone shows the probable track of the center of a storm over a five-day period. With maximum sustained winds of 70 mph, Jose is a tropical storm after being a hurricane through the week. The storm is expected to strengthen and become a hurricane again by this weekend, the center said. At one point last weekend, Jose was a Category 4 hurricane.Jose, which recently completed an odd clockwise loop, is forecast to move closer to the United States before turning north. The vast majority of computer models still keep the storm out to sea, but a few show it making a potential landfall along the East Coast, CNN meteorologist Brandon Miller said."Jose could produce other direct impacts next week along portions of the east coast of the United States from North Carolina northward to New England, but it is too soon to determine what those impacts might be or where they could occur," the hurricane center said.Track the storm hereThe inclusion of the Outer Banks in Thursday's advisories marked the first time the United States mainland has been in the forecast cone tracking Jose.As of 11 pm on Thursday, Jose was in the southwest Atlantic Ocean, about 375 miles northeast of the southeastern Bahamas, and was moving west-northwest at 8 mph.No matter its path, Tropical Storm Jose is expected to bring rough surf and rip current conditions in the next few days. The swells generated by Jose are affecting Bermuda, the Bahamas, the northern coasts of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico and the US Southeast coast. Those effects will spread north along the mid-Atlantic coast in the next few days.Jose is the sixth named hurricane of the Atlantic basin season, which lasts through November. The peak of hurricane season is generally from mid-August to mid-October. Two major hurricanes, Harvey and Irma, have hit the United States, with Irma also demolishing islands in the Caribbean. 2089

The Russian embassy in Washington asked its Twitter followers to vote for which US consulate they'd like to see shuttered Monday, after the Trump administration announced it would close down the Russian consulate in Seattle and expel 60 alleged spies throughout the country. In the poll, they offer the three US consulate locations in Russia as options: St. Petersburg, Vladivostok and Yekaterinburg. The US decided to shut down the Seattle consulate because of its proximity to a submarine base, senior administration officials said Monday, and expel the diplomats for "aggressive" intelligence collection. The move is part of an international effort to punish Russia's government for the alleged poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter in Great Britain. 772
