DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A 95-year-old grandmother in Florida was arrested Saturday after police said she slapped her granddaughter in the face with her slipper before calling 911 to get her out of the house.According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Hattie Reynolds told police her granddaughter, Janeen Williams, 46, would not get out of bed, and that she was "tired of her staying in bed all day soaking up the air conditioning."When officers arrived at the home, Williams told police she did not want to press charges, but because of "strict domestic violence laws" Reynolds was arrested.According to a Florida statute, police officers have the ability to determine if an arrest is needed in a domestic violence instance once probable cause is established."If your wife reported that you threatened to hit her, you would be arrested because that is a domestic violence assault," police Chief Craig Capri told the News-Journal. "I just feel bad for her but the officers did their job as required by the law."Reynolds was booked in the Volusia County Jail and released the next day on her own recognizance.  1126

DENVER —An Aurora, Colorado high school athlete was turned away from a Texas university recently after the school’s head baseball coach told him the school no longer recruits Colorado athletes because of past issues with drug testing. The Cherokee Trail High School student expressed interest in attending Texas Wesleyan University in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on a baseball scholarship but was rejected in an email sent to the student by Head Baseball Coach Mike Jeffcoat.Jeffcoat writes, “Thanks for the interest in our program. Unfortunately, we are not recruiting players from the state of Colorado. In the past, players have had trouble passing our drug test. We have made a decision to not take a chance on Student-athletes from your state. You can thank your liberal politicians. Best of Luck wherever you decide to play.”Although not explicitly mentioned in the email, Jeffcoat is likely referring to Colorado's recreational marijuana laws. The university said it is aware of the email and is investigating the matter. John Veilleux, a spokesperson for Texas Wesleyan University, said the letter in no way reflects TWU, its values or recruiting practices. Veilleux declined to say if previous Colorado athletes had trouble passing drug tests. The school released the following statement:We are aware of the email sent by our baseball coach, and the comments he made are in no way a reflection of Texas Wesleyan University, its values or its recruiting practices. This is a personnel matter and it is currently under investigation. It is our University policy to not discuss personnel matters, but we want to reiterate that this email does not reflect our values and we do not condone discrimination. This includes discrimination on the basis of race, color, origin, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, disability or sexuality; or the political legislation of one’s home state. We are committed to providing an inclusive campus for all of our students, faculty, staff, visitors, potential students and their families.Texas Wesleyan has a long tradition of excellence in athletics and we are committed to recruiting student-athletes who will excel at our university. Like the NAIA’s core values, we are focused on building and recruiting champions of character. 2328

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after someone vandalized a park in Del Mar. According to authorities, someone drove onto the grass at Shores Park and did donuts overnight Sunday. Due in part to recent rain, authorities say the incident left extensive damage. The park is used by students of The Winston School and by pet owners as an off-leash park. The City of Del Mar is working to fix the damage but it’s unclear how much the repairs will cost at this time. 522

DENVER (AP) — Authorities have arrested a Colorado man they say held two roofing-company salesmen at gunpoint who had been knocking on doors in his neighborhood. Police told KUSA-TV that both salesmen were wearing blue polo shirts with a local roofing company logo when Scott Gudmundsen forced them to the ground Thursday. The 65-year-old Gudmundsen told police he thought they were members of a far-left-leaning group known as Antifa. Police determined the two workers were doing nothing wrong and arrested Gudmundsen. In a letter, Colorado State University university president Joyce McConnell, athletic director Joe Parker, and head football coach Steve Addazio addressed the situation."Our student is a young man of color, while the perpetrator is white," the letter read. "Regardless of what investigators learn or reasons the perpetrator gives, we know this: Our student got up Thursday morning, worked out with his team, then showered, dressed, and went to work. Hours later, he was facing a stranger with a gun and hearing police sirens that had been inexplicably called on him. Given what we have seen happening in cities across this county, we know all too well that this encounter could have proceeded very differently."No attorney was listed for Gudmundsen in court records. 1294

Defense Secretary James Mattis has authorized the deployment of more troops to the US-Mexico border, and it may be as many as 5,000.Forces will head to the border by the end of the month, a defense official said. It's a move aimed at sending a message as a migrant caravan makes its way through Mexico, bound for the US border, drawing the ire of President Trump. But it's important to note that even though troops are involved, the military isn't bracing for battle. 484
