SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A gray whale spotted frolicking in shallow waters attracted dolphins and a crowd of swimmers and surfers in the ocean off Mission Beach Wednesday. Lifeguards got a call about the whale possible tangled in fishing line about noon, an official said. A lifeguard who swam toward the whale to investigate determined it was free.The gray whale was young, possibly a year and a half old, whale watcher and photographer Domenic Biagini told 10News. Gray whales are starting to migrate north from Mexico during the spring. There is a good chance San Diegans will see more mothers and juvenile whales closer to shore, Biagini says, because the shallow waters keep the whales safe from orcas. According to the National Weather Service, a cold trough will drop to the southwest Monday, triggering showers along and west of the mountains. The freezing level will fall quickly late in the day, resulting in the possibility of icy conditions on roadways. Tina Camacho remembers asking her daughter Cirena Artero, 16, about her day at school."We talked, and she said her day was okay," said Camacho.Cirena is one of Camacho's five children."Around 6:45 p.m., we thought she went to her room. Around 7:30 p.m., we knew she was missing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A connecting trolley line to San Diego's airport has taken another step closer to reality.Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly signed an exclusive agreement at the Pentagon Thursday to redevelop the former SPAWAR facility, now "NAVWAR," into a transit hub. SANDAG and Navy plan to collaborate on a hub similar to "Grand Central Station" adjacent to the airport, as well as a modernized complex for Navy use."This new agreement is built on San Diego's strong naval heritage," Faulconer said. "The fact that it was signed by the Acting Secretary of the Navy inside the Pentagon sends the undeniable message that there is momentum and energy in both Washington, D.C. and San Diego to do something truly special with this property. It marks a huge next step in revitalizing this area into a civic asset that serves the U.S. Navy, the community and our regional transportation network."According to SANDAG, one option being explored last year would support housing, retail, and office space. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A “rolling altercation” between two drivers in the Bonita area led to the stabbing death of one man and the detention of another. Chula Vista police Capt. Phil Collum told 10News the incident was reported just after 9 a.m. at the intersection of Sweetwater Road and Willow Street, near the Chula Vista Golf Course.Collum said officers that responded to the incident arrived to find an unidentified man lying on the ground with stab wounds. Life-saving measures were administered before he was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital. The man died from his injuries upon arrival, according to Collum.The other man, 60-year-old Rickey Smith, remained at the scene. Officers said they found a folding-blade knife, believed to be the weapon, on Smith's belt. He surrendered without incident, police said.Collum said witnesses reported the drivers of a white Ford Ranger pickup and silver Nissan Quest minivan yelling at each other before colliding. Smith left his truck and stabbed the victim, who was still in his minivan, police said. No other parties were involved, Collum told 10News.
