SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Friday for help in identifying a pair of thieves who have swindled San Diego-area senior citizens out of thousands of dollars in recent weeks via a lottery scam. The crimes occurred on at least a half-dozen occasions during March and victimized retirement-age Hispanic women in various local communities, including Vista and the city of San Diego, said Sgt. Karl Miller of the sheriff's Financial Crimes/Elder Abuse Unit. To con the victims, one of the perpetrators, calling herself Francisca, approaches them at grocery stores and initiates conversations in Spanish, according to investigators. During the interactions, the crook claims to have a friend with a winning lottery ticket who cannot claim the prize because he or she is not a U.S. citizen. At that point, a man who goes by the name Jose wanders up and pretends to overhear the women. He chimes in, saying he knows of a way to get the lottery winnings, if the victims are willing to provide upfront money. If they do, he promises, they will get a portion of the monetary prize. At that point, the swindlers drive the victims' banks or homes to get cash. Once the thieves have the money, they drop the victims off in an unfamiliar location, leaving them stranded until they can get help. The targeted women have lost between ,500 and ,000 each, according to sheriff's investigators. The female perpetrator is described as 40 to 65 years old, with dark hair and a medium build. Her accomplice stand about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, has short black hair and is heavyset. Both are Hispanic, with accents that do not sound Mexican in origin. Surveillance cameras have captured images of the thieves. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Multiple local and nonprofit organizations around San Diego County will host Christmas meals Tuesday for underserved and low-income residents.Salvation Army San Diego will host its 35th annual Christmas meal, beginning at 11 a.m. at Golden Hall at 202 C St. The organization expects hundreds of volunteers to assist with the event. Volunteers will escort attendees to their seats and serve them a traditional holiday meal.Serving Seniors will also host its annual Christmas meal for low- income and homeless San Diego County seniors, many of whom would otherwise spend the holiday alone. About 350 seniors will enjoy a meal of Cornish hen with Mornay sauce, cornbread dressing, whipped potatoes, green peas and carrot cake, according to the organization. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who ambushed a janitorial worker at a Little Italy coffee shop at knifepoint, tried to sexually assault her and stole her SUV, was sentenced today to 14 years in state prison.Christopher Merron, 28, was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life.The attack occurred around 4:30 a.m. last Oct. 14 as the victim was cleaning the coffee shop in the 1700 block of India Street. Merron pushed the woman into a back room, took her car keys and threatened her with a knife, according to police and prosecutors.Following a struggle, she was able to break free and run out of the building, said San Diego police Lt. Jason Weeden.The assailant fled in the woman's 1998 GMC Jimmy. Merron was arrested in Mission Valley the next day and the victim's SUV was recovered, Weeden said.Merron pleaded guilty in January to assault with intent to commit a sex offense, robbery and sexual battery charges and admitted a knife-use sentencing enhancement allegation. Other charges, including kidnapping with the intent to commit a sex offense, attempted oral copulation, false imprisonment with force and auto theft, were dismissed at sentencing. 1165

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - At least three vehicles were burned Wednesday morning when a carport caught fire in the parking lot of a Mountain View apartment complex, but firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to the apartments nearby, authorities said.The blaze was reported at 5:10 a.m. in the parking lot of an apartment building on Benfield Court, off South 45th Street between Ocean View Boulevard and Imperial Avenue, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.Firefighters responded and found a carport engulfed in flames along with at least three vehicles in the parking lot, a SDFRD dispatch supervisor said. Crews knocked down the flames within 20 minutes and no adjacent structures were damaged.No injuries were reported.The cause of the fire was under investigation. 792
