SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A football player was badly injured during a Homecoming football game at Scripps Ranch High School Friday night. According to a witness, the injury happened five minutes into the second quarter at the 30-year line. The witness told 10News the wide receiver laid on the field for 20 minutes before an ambulance arrived to rush the student to the hospital. School officials and the victim's sister confirmed to 10News that the football player is expected to be okay. 493

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A former San Diego County Sheriff’s Captain pleaded guilty in federal court on Tuesday to illegally trafficking firearms.In a gray suit and a mask, Marco Garmo made his way into the downtown courthouse. ABC10 News’ cameras were not allowed in the courtroom, where Garmo stood before the judge and pleaded guilty to one count of engaging in dealing firearms without a license.The case stems from last year's bombshell allegations that five defendants including Garmo, prominent jeweler Leo Hamel, and former Sheriff's Lieutenant Fred Magana were involved in a massive gun running operation.ABC10 News was there as agents raided Leo Hamel's Fine Jewelers in Old Town.Hamel and Magana were charged with working with Garmo to re-sell guns and falsify records. Both have since pleaded guilty.The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Tuesday that the cases for the other two defendants are still pending.According to prosecutors, Garmo used his position to buy and re-sell guns that are intended only for law enforcement, not the general public, so-called off roster guns. Over six years, investigators say he sold more than 100 firearms for cash or to collect favors from those who might support him in a future run for San Diego Sheriff.Garmo faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a fine of 0,000 and supervised release for up to three years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A deceased whale was found by lifeguards floating off the coast of San Diego Thursday.San Diego Fire Rescue Lifeguards at Black's Beach spotted the dead whale floating about two to three miles off Sumner Canyon.Lifeguards responded to the gray whale, found to be about 30 feet in length and show obvious sounds of bloating and decomposition, according to SDFD spokesperson Monica Mu?oz.RELATED: Humpback whale feeding frenzy off San Diego's coastSDFD lifeguards are working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to secure samples of the whale carcass and figure out what disposal options are available.It wasn't immediately clear what led to the whale's death. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A group of parents rallied in Mira Mesa Thursday morning to urge the San Diego Unified School District to reopen schools for in-person learning sooner rather than later.Since March, the district has kept school doors shut, but officials recently announced plans to initiate Phase 2 of a return plan come January.At Thursday’s rally, parents said that's not soon enough."Kids are depressed. We're trying to get them outside safe, but they need socialization and to be with friends. That's half of what they get out of school,” a parent said.City Councilmember Chris Cate joined parents Thursday in support, adding, "Every day that passes is critical."Cate said San Diego's climate could have easily played a part in welcome all students back to class by now."Outdoor learning, why are we not taking advantage of the climate we have here in San Diego? After a week of deliberations, the Vista jury found Winslow guilty of raping a woman in Encinitas and exposing himself to two others, but deadlocked on eight other charges.
