The conversation around wearing different protective gear is expanding. In particular, face shields.Teachers recently asked the nation’s top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, about it and he said, “if you can get one, it’s not a bad idea.”Fauci went on to say that a shield shouldn't necessarily be worn in place of a mask, but more parents are considering the option for kids.“For some of the kids, a mask just isn't going to work. And in those cases, a face shield can be considered, but I think it needs to be understood that that’s not the default,” said Dr. Preeti Malani with the Infectious Diseases Society of America.Infectious disease experts say there just isn't enough data yet on how much protection a face shield provides.One study found it did significantly reduce the number of inhaled droplets, but cloth masks are also about protecting others. Shields were not as sure to do that as well.“If you're wearing a shield, the respiratory secretions that might be coming from your mouth or nose are not going to be as well contained,” said Malani.In the health care setting, face shields are used primarily to prevent splashing in the eyes.Malani offered this advice about finding the right shield.“It’s important that it’s long enough to really protect the whole face and that it wraps around fully and that it fits well up at the forehead,” said Malani.Companies, including Apple, Nike, General Motors, and John Deere have all started producing face shields.In a JAMA Network open viewpoint, it was pointed out that face shields have some advantages over masks. The death toll from the ongoing Camp Fire near Paradise, California continues to grow as authorities found another eight bodies, increasing the number of confirmed dead to 58. The Camp Fire is the largest single wildfire in California history, now doubling the death toll of second-deadliest fire in California history. The number of confirmed destroyed structures also has increased to more than 10,000. The death toll could continue to rise as the Butte County Sheriff's Office said that nearly 100 people remain missing. Most of the missing are elderly residents of Paradise.  One bit of good news is that officials are starting to get the fire under containment. The Camp Fire scorched 138,000 acres and is now 35 percent contained. Meanwhile, authorities continue to battle a massive blaze in Southern California. The Woolsey Fire has burned 98,362 acres and is 52 percent contained, officials from LA Fire said.  971

The federal government has placed thousands of unaccompanied immigrant children in the homes of sponsors, but last year it couldn't account for nearly 1,500 of them.Steven Wagner, a top official with the Department of Health and Human Services, disclosed the number to a Senate subcommittee last month while discussing the state of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) that oversees the care of unaccompanied immigrant children.Wagner is the acting assistant secretary for the Administration for Children and Families, which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services. ORR is a program of the Administration for Children and Families.CNN reported earlier this month that, in his testimony, Wagner said during the last three months of 2017, the ORR lost track of nearly 1,500 immigrant children it had placed in the homes of sponsors.Wagner's statement has attracted more attention amid reports that immigrant children are being separated from their parents at the US border. 998

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is asking people who take a COVID-19 vaccine to download a smartphone app so it can continue to track side effects.The app, called V-Safe, uses text messages and web surveys from the CDC to check in with patients who have gotten a COVID-19 vaccine.The app will also remind patients when it's time to go back for a second shot.Patients can expect to experience mild symptoms like fever, headache and muscle aches after taking the vaccine. But doctors, like Dr. Grace Lee — the associate chief medical officer for practice innovation at Stanford Children's Health and a member of the CDC's vaccine advisory panel — say those side effects don't tend to last very long."We hope that patients will be willing to engage in the system, recognizing it does take some time," Lee said. "But it's really important for all of us in the U.S. to make sure that we are helping to create a robust vaccine safety monitoring system for all COVID vaccines."Lee says that because clinical trials for COVID-19 vaccines have been so large — with 30,000 to 60,000 people in each trial, compared to just several thousand for a typical trial — there's already a lot known about the vaccines.The trials have shown no major safety risks thus far, but Lee says rare adverse events can happen — like the two healthcare workers in Alaska earlier this week who suffered anaphylactic allergic reactions with the Pfizer vaccine. The side effects reported by those two patients were similar to the ones suffered by two people in the U.K. earlier this month.Lee says that's why the CDC is counting on as many people as possible to use V-Safe."My hope is that if the numbers are high," Lee said. "It just means it gives us more information more quickly, and so for anything rare that might occur, we would be able to pick it up much more quickly."V-Safe send text messages to patients, asking them how they are feeling for up to six weeks after their shots.
