New gun legislation proposes that anyone who wants to buy a firearm would need to submit their social media profiles and search history for review before buying a gun in New York.Officials would be able to review up to three years worth of search history.The bill was drafted by state Senator Kevin Parker and Brooklyn borough President Eric Adams."There should be more restrictions on how guns are purchased. We should have more background checks," Paul McQuillen, director of the Buffalo chapter of  New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, said.He said that the NYAGC isn't ready to back the bill yet, but he does think it could be beneficial."We’ve obviously seen some of the mass shooters have a social media history that should have sent red flags," he said.It's not going to be easy to pass this kind of bill. James Tresmond, a gun rights lawyer, said it violates multiple constitutional rights."The first, the second amendment, the fifth amendment, the fourth amendment, and the 14th amendment," Tresmond said.The bill still has a way to go before it is passed or denied. NEWTON, Mass. – As eviction moratoriums end across the country, homeowners and renters are facing a crisis. Many are on the verge of homelessness as cities and towns scramble to distribute what little federal emergency funds they have left.Amanda Berman is the Director of Housing and Community Development in Newton, Massachusetts, a wealthy suburb near Boston. But even some of the nation's wealthiest cities are realizing their residents are not immune from economic impact of the pandemic.“This was there all along. We’ve been having a housing crisis forever. This is exposing how deep the cracks are,” Berman said.With help from the CARES Act, Newton was able to secure million in emergency housing funds. To spread the money out as best they could, the city decided to assist people in low-income housing with 70% of their rent. At least 170 families have been helped in the last two months.“You fight and fight to get ahead and something like this throws you back really far,” Berman added.Nationally, 20% of households missed their rent payments last month. Housing experts say that number is likely to skyrocket in September as extra unemployment funding and rental assistance money disappears.“The real estate industry will go through massive changes here in the next few months,” said Jeff Larabee, who has an apartment complex he rents out.He's had some tenants simply move out because they’ve lost their jobs and can’t pay rent, which has left him concerned about making mortgage payments.“I think there’s going to be a lot more homelessness, I don’t know how we're going to make all the mortgage payments,” he added. 1641

Netflix unveiled a new logo on Monday, and while the changes may not seem visible at first glance, the company says the change will save them millions of dollars.That's because the company's new logo is written in a custom-made typeface, a font that Netflix will be using across it's platform and brand identity.The font, called "Netflix sans," was developed in-house at Netflix and designed in partnership with fount foundry Dalton Maag.Previously, Netflix was using a "Gotham" typeface — a font the company was paying to license. NEW ORLEANS — A Black man whose life sentence for stealing hedge clippers in a home burglary drew scathing criticism from the chief justice of Louisiana's Supreme Court has been granted parole. Louisiana's high court had denied release for 63-year-old Fair Wayne Bryant earlier this year for the 1997 burglary that netted him a set of hedge clippers. In dissent, Chief Justice Bernette Johnson said the habitual offender law under which Bryant was sentenced was a “modern manifestation” of Jim Crow era laws aimed at jailing Black people for simple crime. Conditions of Bryant's parole include mandatory attendance at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and community service. 678

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Workers were cleaning up after high tides caused a 40-foot sailboat to capsize and also flooded the streets of Newport Beach late Friday, causing a traffic jam that kept vehicles from leaving the Balboa Peninsula for hours. The Orange County Register reported that eight bulldozers are dedicated to building back a sandy berm before high waters return Saturday night. Like many other Southern California beaches, the beach is closed to discourage crowds this holiday weekend. People managed to get off the sailboat before it capsized and turned into wreckage. 596
