NEW DELHI, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Sonia Gandhi, chairperson of India's ruling Congress-led United Progress Alliance (UPA), Friday expressed her wish that relations between India and China can be enhanced with common efforts by the two countries.     During a meeting with visiting Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo, Gandhi said that there exists a very solid basis for developing friendly and cooperative relations between India and China. Dai conveyed cordial greeting and good wishes from General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Chinese President Hu Jintao, who also expressed his congratulations to the Congress party and the UPA for successfully winning a second term of government in the general elections this year. He said that President Gandhi has personally made great efforts for the development of Sino-Indian relations as leader of the UPA and the Congress party.     Dai also said China is willing to make common efforts with India to upgrade the bilateral strategic cooperative partnership to a new level.     Gandhi also memorized the 1988 historic visit to China by her late husband, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, as well as her attendance of the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.     She expressed her wish that as the 60th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and China is nearing, the peoples of India and China, especially the youth of the two countries, increase human exchanges to build a good social foundation for furthering friendship between the two countries.     Dai and Gandhi also exchanged views on strengthening friendly ties between the Communist Party of China and the Congress party of India.

BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday proposed closer cooperation among members of a regional security group to tackle the world economic recession.     "Confronted with the global financial crisis and aiming at a steady economic growth, member states of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) should work together and seek mutual benefit," Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang told a SCO business forum in Beijing.     The SCO was founded in 2001 to enhance security cooperation among its six member states, namely, China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Mongolia, India, Iran and Pakistan are observers to the regional group. Instead, it offered more opportunities for them to work together," Li said, citing the fact that SCO members are complementary in economies and have an increasingly-connected market.     Although the total population and territories of SCO member states amounted to a quarter and one fifth of the world's total, their overall economic scale and trade volume made up only the world's 11 percent or 10 percent respectively, Li said.     "Thus, there is a huge potential for SCO member states to expand economic and technology cooperation," Li said.     He called for SCO member states to carry out the joint actions to deal with the global slump and accelerate the process of trade and investment liberalization.     He proposed promoting the projects that involved and benefited multiple parties, building infrastructure networks of transportation, communications and energy.     It was necessary to step up cooperation in modern agriculture, emerging industries, high-tech and social welfare so as to benefit the people, Li said.     He vowed that China will unswervingly pursue the path of peaceful development, take a more active part in SCO affairs, fully participate in regional economic and regional cooperation in a bid to work for the welfare of 1.5 billion people within the SCO member states.     The business forum was an important event under the framework of the eighth SCO prime ministers' meeting, which took place on Wednesday.

PHUKET, Thailand, July 21 (Xinhua) -- China is willing to cooperate with the Philippines to push forward the relations between the two countries, said Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in the meeting with his Philippine counterpart Alberto Romulo Tuesday.     The Chinese government encourages and supports competitive enterprises to invest in the Philippines, and it also promotes cooperation in areas such as agriculture and new energy, said Yang. BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Former Chinese ambassador to Brazil Chen Duqing said Saturday China may play a significant role in Riode Janeiro's preparations for the 2016 Olympic Games.     "Compared with the other applicants, currently Rio de Janeiro still has a lot to do to improve its sports facilities and other infrastructure, which indicates a special opportunity for Chinese companies," Chen told Xinhua Saturday in an exclusive interview.     The costs of preparing for the event in 2016 are estimated at roughly 12 billion U.S. dollars. However, the event is expected to generate 250 billion.     Zhou Zhiwei, an expert in Brazil studies with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted that for Rio de Janeiro, traffic and infrastructure are the city's weak points.     Beating rivals Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid, Rio de Janeiro won the right to host the world's largest stage of sporting events after three failed attempts.     Rio de Janeiro's win also marks the first time that an Olympic Games will be held in South America.     Chen said as big third world countries, both China and Brazil have cooperated closely in applying for host cities, making preparations and organizing the Games in the past few years.     In 2007, China's General Administration of Sports sent teams to Brazil to draw experiences from the Pan American Games. During last year's Beijing Olympics, the Brazilian Olympic Committee and the Rio de Janeiro bid team came to China to watch the games.     Besides the Games, Rio de Janeiro, along with another seven cities, was also expected to host the 2014 World Cup, which required large investments in infrastructures in terms of sports facilities, transportation and reception, Chen said.     "Just like their Beijing friends, I believe people in Rio de Janeiro will also enjoy rich benefits brought along by the Olympic Games," he added.
