SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ocean Beach residents say they are uniting to address issues they believe stem from people living in vehicles.OB resident Michael Copley and nearly 100 others emailed San Diego Police this week, asking for officers to step up patrols in their neighborhood. "I'm just a citizen. I have no authority, I can't enforce anything," Michael Copley says. In a response posted to social media by SDPD officer David Surwilo, Surwilo says the concerns have been sent to patrol supervisors so that they "are aware of your community safety issues, what you are seeing and dealing with and your requests for assistance to address these issues."SDPD Capt. Scott Wahl adds, "We are out in the Ocean Beach area, seven days a week, making sure that we are addressing these issues. And it's important that the community continues to provide that information to us."The post referenced complaints pertaining to areas of Ocean Beach, Robb Field, and dog beach over vehicle campers, drug use, homelessness, and quality of life."One person sleeping in their car is not a big deal. But 100 people sleeping in their vans, that creates an impact on the community," Copley said.In May, city leaders approved restrictions on people living in their vehicles within San Diego. Part of those restriction prevent people from sleeping in vehicles within 500 feet of a school or home and overnight anywhere in the city from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.Wahl says that now, the city has more beds and parking lots available for free to those living in vehicles that can help alleviate the concerns. But according to a July report by 10News, one of the city's newest parking lots for those individuals is going largely unused.Police recommend residents report non-emergency issues on the city's Get It Done mobile app. But if it is an emergency, residents are encouraged to call the police. 2190

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police have arrested a man they say tried to sexually assault a woman in Little Italy before stealing her car. Police say the man, identified as Christopher Merron, 28, was arrested Monday on several charges, including assault with intent to commit a sex crime, brandishing a deadly weapon and auto theft. According to police, the incident happened on the 1700 block of India Street at 4:33 a.m. Sunday.RELATED: Man tries to sexually assault woman before stealing her car in Little Italy, police sayPolice say the man walked into Cafe Italia while the victim was cleaning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Puerto Ricans are living in fear after hundreds of earthquakes rocked the region, according to a San Diegan with family there.Tommy Rosas last lived on the island when he was 14. Though he moved to the mainland, Puerto Rico never left him."It hurts," he said sadly, "every minute of the day, I walk, breathe, sweat, cry Puerto Rico."He's been hurting more for his home since 2017, when Hurricane Maria hit. "My family moved, with the exception of a couple cousins who live in Cabo Rojo." He said it was too much to start over an most of his family moved to the states."The electrical grid is ancient, and it has to be repaired. They started the repairs little by little, then the earthquakes hit," saying in frustration, "whats next? What did Puerto Ricans do to deserve this?"The shaking started December 28th, the biggest quake struck January 7th, registering a magnitude 6.4."There's thousands of people living on the streets, because of their homes being destroyed or they're afraid of their home collapsing on top of them." Rosas said friends described the desperate living conditions through social media.Rosas gave a friend a flash light as a gift before he went to Puerto Rico a few months back. He said it was a joke, but now that friend now using it regularly, "he's in Isla Verde, so they lost power there, and it's periodically, it comes and goes. The food supply, water," he said was dwindling.He said a group caravaned from the north side of the island bringing supplies like diapers, formula and juice to those affected by the earthquakes.The positivity keeps Rosas going, "we don't give up, we won't lay down and say okay."He raised ,000 for supplies for the island and is planning another fundraiser. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Pacific Beach residents were seen running for their lives as a pickup truck slammed into several parked vehicles early Thursday.Witness video captured the incident, showing a pickup truck revving its engine, screeching its tires, and slamming into vehicles. Witnesses said at least nine vehicles were damaged. Another video showed neighbors holding the driver down on the ground until police arrived, one neighbor holding the man down in a headlock. Someone nearby could be heard yelling, "don't hurt him," at the group.Police arrive to detain the driver, but it's not clear what led to the dangerous incident.One neighbor who helped hold down the driver said his first reaction was to prevent anyone for getting hurt."My first reaction he needed to get out of the car and restrain him so he didn't hit anyone else," said James Scherr.The driver was taken to a nearby hospital by police for minor injuries.
