SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Coronavirus Pandemic has had an unexpectedly positive effect on the Helen Woodward Animal Center, as pet adoptions have doubled over the past week."This is a fabulous time to bring animals into your home," says Jessica Gercke, the spokesperson for the HWAC.Gercke says the Center has seen a surge in people applying for adoption and fostering because they're working from home, and have more time to integrate a new pet into the family."We're seeing a lot of teachers and graduate students," says Gercke, noting that many had planned to wait until summer break, but moved up their adoptions because of the extra time at home.That's what led Anna Fairman, a Carlsbad Kindergarten teacher, to adopt last Thursday. She took home a new dog, Archie."I had had this plan that I was gonna adopt a dog at the beginning of this summer so that I could obviously have time to spend with the dog and train it," she says. "Now, just seemed like the perfect time."The HWAC is doing its part to keep the adoptions as safe as possible. They're only letting one person in at a time, with appointments set up in advance. Each person is allowed to interact with up to three animals to decide which one to take home.For fostering, the HWAC is doing video chat calls to inspect the homes of people wishing to foster and make sure they're safe and appropriate for the pets. They're also doing online training for potential foster families."We're seeing this beautiful, beautiful love that animals give to us," says Gercke. "It lowers blood pressure. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The gloves are coming off in the race for San Diego County District Attorney, with a unlikely person taking shots at Genevieve Jones-Wright Friday.Rebecca Harrison, who said she’s the victim of a Balboa Park rapist, backed candidate Summer Stephan.At a news conference in front of the courthouse, Harrison said Jones-Wright, who was the public defender in the case, treated Harrison as if she was the one on trial.“Several weeks ago I found out that Genevieve was running for D.A. and it literally made me sick to my stomach. It felt like someone had kicked me because she was professing that she gives dignity and a voice to victims when that is not what I experienced whatsover,” Harrison said.Jones-Wright told Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin she gave Harrison an extreme level of compassion and that the press conference was all political posturing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The downtown building at 101 Ash Street has been sitting vacant for most of the last four years and as it continues to sit empty, taxpayers are footing the ,000 per day bill.City Council leaders voted 5-4 — with Council members Vivian Moreno, Monica Montgomery, Barbara Bry, and Georgette Gómezto voting in opposition — to request monthly updates on the building's status and costs for several options presented by Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office.The mayor's options included putting millions of dollars more into the building for the needed repairs, buying out the lease, pursue a new landlord, trying to renegotiate its lease, or walking away entirely, the last of which could risk litigation and credit damage.The coronavirus pandemic has cleared out office buildings across downtown San Diego. But emptiness is business as usual for the old Sempra building at 101 Ash.In 2016, the city approved a lease-to-own agreement for the building, valued at million. The idea was to move upwards of 1,100 city employees into the facility.But officials quickly discovered a series of problems requiring major renovations to the site's 19 floors.In December 2019, the city finally began moving workers into the building, only to vacate them a month later when the county found traces of asbestos.So how did the city get into this mess? A new investigation shows it really never did its homework for such a big purchase from the start.The law firm Hugo Parker found that, "at no time, however, did the city formally inspect 101 Ash before closing escrow."In January, councilmember Barbara Bry showed ABC 10News a document that the city accepted the property as is."That is stupid to do when you are doing a long-term lease purchase on a building that was built in the 1960s," Bry said.An additional new report from Kitchell says the building needs 5 million of repairs, which is well more than what the city paid for it. 1947

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The cost of living in San Diego has become more burdensome over the last year, according to a new report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The bureau says that while prices fell 0.3 percent between May and July of this year, prices for consumer goods have risen 1.4 percent over the last 12 months. The cost of housing is up more than three percent since this time last year while food prices rose by a little more than one percent. Nationally, prices for consumer goods are up nearly 2 percent year-over-year. Also year-over-year, the price for fuel and utilities has risen by more than 6 percent, according to the bureau. 656

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The executive director of a senior living home defrauded residents of nearly 0,000, police say. Jorge Gonzales was arrested on November 12 for financial elder abuse by a caregiver, identity theft, grand theft and forgery. According to police, Gonzales is the executive director of the Golden Living Senior Home on the 3200 block of Duke Street. Police say Gonzales defrauded three residents of approximately 9,000.
