The Humane Society of the United States went undercover, investigating animal testing at one of the largest contract research organizations in the world. Officials found dozens of beagles and hounds that were force-fed fungicides to test a new pesticide product at a lab in Michigan.The undercover video is hard to watch. "In some cases, the animals are forced to ingest substances either by putting a gel capsule down their throats or with a tube,” Kathleen Conlee, vice president of Animal Research Issues at the Humane Society of the United States, can be heard saying in the undercover video. For some, it’s hard to fathom. However, Conlee says this kind of animal testing happens more often than we think. "There are about 60,000 dogs at about 350 facilities in the United States right now, and I think the public is very shocked to learn that it's at that scale,” Conlee says. And that's just dogs. Conlee explains when you factor in all animals, the number being used for testing is closer to 25 million per year. "That's warm-blooded animals that doesn't include fish, reptiles, amphibians," she explains. In this case out of Michigan, 36 beagles were being used to test pesticides for a company called Dow Chemical Company. It’s a practice that is not against the law. "The company is doing legal activities,” Conlee says. “Nothing illegal was happening." Often times, Conlee says federal agencies like the FDA and EPA request animal tests to approve products or provide funding for experiments. Most recently, the U.S.D.A. was under fire by a separate animal watchdog group for alleged "kitten cannibalism,” where they report experiments involving feeding kittens to dogs. These are practices Conlee says should stop."We're going to be calling on these agencies to change their practices,” she says. 1826

The American Medical Association on Tuesday called for an immediate ban on all electronic cigarettes and vaping devices.The group adopted the sweeping stance at a policy-making meeting in San Diego. It aims to lobby for state and federal laws, regulations or legal action to achieve a ban, but the industry is sure to fight back.The AMA cited a surge in underage teen use of e-cigarettes, which typically heat a solution that contains nicotine.“It’s simple, we must keep nicotine products out of the hands of young people.” Dr. Patrice Harris, AMA’s president, said in a statement.The doctors’ group said a separate health issue also prompted its action — the recent U.S. outbreak of lung illnesses linked to vaping. Most of those sickened said they vaped THC, the high-inducing ingredient in marijuana, not nicotine. Officials believe a thickening agent used in black market THC vaping products may be a culprit.The outbreak has “shined a light on the fact that we have very little evidence about the short- and long-term health consequences of e-cigarettes and vaping products,” Harris said. About 2,100 people have gotten sick; 42 have died.The AMA has previously sought bans on e-cigarette flavors and ads.Some observers say the AMA’s position is flawed and has little chance of achieving a sweeping ban.“I would be 100% with the AMA if they were seeking a ban on all tobacco products that are smoked, including e-cigarettes,” said Jonathan Foulds, a tobacco addiction specialist at Penn State University. “But right now, nicotine electronic cigarettes are competing with and replacing the most harmful legal product in this country.”Gregory Conley, president of the American Vaping Association, a pro-vaping advocacy group, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has made clear that its focus “is not store-bought nicotine vaping products, but illicit contaminated THC oil cartridges sold by drug dealers.”“It would be a mistake for adult smokers and their families to listen to these misguided prohibitionists, as the evidence continues to indicate that adult smokers who switch to nicotine vaping products greatly improve their health,” Conley said.The AMA policy calls for a ban of vaping products not approved to help people quit. The man who drove into a crowd of counterprotesters in Charlottesville's "Unite the Right" rally two years ago has pleaded for mercy and asked for a sentence less than life imprisonment in his federal hate crimes case.In a sentencing memorandum filed in federal court Friday, James A. Fields Jr. said the court should not give him a life sentence because of his young age, history of mental illness and childhood trauma, and to show that no one is defined by their worst moments."James did not come to Charlottesville with any plan to commit an act of violence. In the space of only a few minutes, caught in circumstances he did not intend to create, he acted in an aggressive and impulsive manner consistent with his mental health history and his age," the memo reads."In a matter of seconds he caused irreparable harm for which there is no excuse. But this Court can understand his actions, without excusing them, as symptomatic of transient immaturity, and not consider them to be predictive of who he might be in the future with time and medication."The memorandum notes that Fields' grandfather killed his grandmother and then himself, and that his father died in a car accident before Fields was born. His mother was in an accident that left her paraplegic before he was born and raised him as a single mother. The memo also says he has been taking medication since his imprisonment that has controlled his symptoms."No amount of punishment imposed on James can repair the damage he caused to dozens of innocent people. But this Court should find that retribution has limits," the memo states.The memo comes ahead of his sentencing in his federal case, in which he pleaded guilty to 29 hate crimes in order to avoid the death penalty.Fields was 20 when he attended the August 2017 demonstrations in Charlottesville, Virginia, and joined white nationalists, neo-Nazis and other groups opposed to the city's decision to remove a statue of Confederate Gen.
