WASHINGTON D.C. — A 17-year-old boy was killed and 20 people were shot, including an off-duty police officer, in Washington D.C. early Sunday morning at a large gathering.The victim was identified as 17-year-old Christopher Brown and police say the off-duty 1st District police officer was shot and is in the hospital fighting for her life.Officers said another 17-year-old was shot and the other victims were all adults and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.The police chief said there were multiple shooters and at least 11 of the 20 people shot were women. “There was some kind of a dispute,” said Police Chief Peter Newsham, with the Metropolitan Police Department. “Multiple weapons were produced,” he told reporters. He said a motive for the shooting wasn’t clear.The chief also said they would be talking to building management about the gathering and officers will be looking at whether more could be done to break up the group.At this time, officers believe the gathering started late Saturday night and shots were fired just after midnight. "Sadly, some people who have no regard for human life, opened fire," said Mayor Muriel Bowser, reiterating that drinking and using marijuana in the street is illegal in D.C., as is having a gathering of this size. You see the pain in their eyes when they can't get into the car or run after the ball.Veterinarians across the U.S. say it's not just old age, but arthritis that's causing your dog pain, and a new drug trial is working to make your furry companion feel better.One of the clinics testing the new drug is Paradise Animal Hospital in Catonsville, Maryland. Dr. Cheryl Burke says she to qualify for the trial, dogs have to have obvious signs of arthritis and cannot have cancer. At the clinic, they conduct blood tests, x-rays and a physical exam.Hannah, a blonde chow mix, came in for the procedure."She has a lot of trouble getting up and when she goes to walk up and down the stairs, she stares, like can I do this? Can I do this? Breaks my heart when I see that," Hannah's mom, Donna Foster said.Foster found out from a friend this clinic was conducting the trial and thought she'd take a chance, "I mean she's fourteen years old and basically she's really healthy so if I can keep her for another 20 years, I know that's not realistic but I will and I want her to have a quality of life."The trial was created in San Diego, by Animal Cell Therapies, and uses canine stem cells to grow cartilage in the joint, so the dog has more cushion when he/she walks or runs."Stem cells are the body's primitive precursor cells and we all have them, and when we're born, there's a huge population of them in our umbilical cord," Dr. Burke said.The stem cells adapt to the needs around them, so they could turn cancerous, something Dr. Burke and pet parents don't want. That's why dogs go through several tests (for free) before they can qualify.The clinic is doing the entire trial for free, to get FDA approval, so other pet parents can one day buy the drug.Part of the study requires that the test be double blind, meaning no one, even Dr. Burke can see which drug is given to the dog.Each dog undergoes the same procedure. Then pet parents come back for a one month, three month and six month check up to see how the dog is progressing.If the study is approved any dog who didn't get the drug will get it for free."If it's approved, it could be a few years, before it's on the market but it could be wonderful," Dr. Burke said.There is no ballpark figure as to how much the drug may cost, but dog lovers are hopeful it could help their furry friend have a longer, better life. 2431

(KGTV) - President Trump addressed questions Tuesday about a possible closure of the U.S.-Mexico border, saying “I’m totally prepared to do it.” Speaking at a White House news conference, Trump called on Congress to make a deal and the Mexican government to stop immigrants from entering Mexico. Trump suggested Mexico had stepped up its efforts to keep Central American migrants from moving north in the past two days. The president also demanded change in what he described as "the worst, dumbest immigration system in the world."“We need to get rid of chain migration, we need to get rid of catch and release, and visa lottery, and we have to do something about asylum, and to be honest with you, we have to get rid of judges,” said Trump. Closing the border would have a severe impact to the U.S. economy, especially in border cities like San Diego. The flow of goods, including avocados and cars, would be disrupted, along with manufacturing supply lines. The Council of Economic Advisers was conducting studies on the potential impact of a border closure and "working with the president to give him those options," said White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders. When asked about the economic impact of a border shutdown, Trump said, “To me trading is very important the borders are very important but security is what - the most important.” Trump also left open the possibility of closing sections of the southern border instead of the entire border. WEEKI WACHEE, Fla. — Searing pain and immediate swelling were the first signs that 6-year-old Kyden Debyah needed immediate medical attention.While playing in his backyard Monday morning, Kyden said he felt what he thought was a bee sting his right foot near his big toe. Then his mom saw a snake coiled up underneath the tire swing Kyden was about to get on.“I heard him scream 'My leg, my leg,'” Amber Debyah said. Debyah called 911 and grabbed a rake to kill the snake. By the time she came back she said she knew it was bad.“His foot was double the size. It was really hot, red,” Debyah said.First responders told her to try and get the snake so they could identify it and figure out what type of antivenin he needed. First responders brought the dead snake to the emergency room and doctors began administering antivenin for a pygmy rattlesnake bite. In all, Kyden got 18 vials before the swelling subsided and his symptoms started to go away.  The entire time Debyah worried if her son would lose his leg or worse.“I really feel he got lucky after reading other people's stories,” Debyah said. “I feel like if it would have bit him fully with both fangs, it would’ve been a lot worse.”Only one fang injected venom into Kyden’s body. “He was in great spirits the whole time. He was laughing and joking I mean other than the pain in his foot he had no symptoms, no fever, no vomiting. Normal Kyden, except for the pain,” Debyah said.  Kyden might have a low-grade fever, sore joints, rashes, but nothing that will cause permanent damage, Debyah said. Each vial of antivenin costs around ,000.
