We’re monitoring live brain waves."She says, in a recording of the brain’s waves, she can see certain brainwave activity associated with challenges like depression or anxiety.“If someone has too much or too little of something, that causes them to have symptoms," Myles said.She says with neurofeedback, they then “train” the brain to perform better.A patient sits in a chair with electrodes attached to their head as they watch a screen with headphones on. Their brain is rewarded when their brainwaves are in a certain range with a screen that brightens and audio that plays louder in their headphones.“The brain is training to do what we’re asking it to do," Myles said.Think of it as conditioning, just like any other part of the body.“Your brain is a muscle, just as if you were to have a sprained ankle or a broken leg. You can’t expect someone to run a race with it," Tripp said.Shelli sees the methods they use at The Mind Gym as a way to treat mental health beyond traditional paths such as medication, and a way to reach breakthroughs that can feel hard to find.“It’s kind of like an onion. It will unfold stuff," Myles said. "So the importance of having a counselor while you’re doing neurofeedback is important.”Though it is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health says Neurofeedback is an alternative method that has shown improvement in treating many mental health disorders. But its report suggests the benefits aren’t long-lasting.“I’m able to sleep for the first time in my life," Tripp said.Tripp says her sessions twice a week for six months have undeniably worked for her.“Colors are brighter, food tastes different, it’s beyond words really," Tripp said. “To know I could have transformed my life so long ago, nobody should be struggling right now that this is out there.” 2506

It is in Michigan, thanks to an old law.Some want to do away with the law that bans unmarried couples from living under the same roof.State Sen. Steve Bieda is leading the way to get ride of the antiquated law."It is actually one of the silliest laws we have on the books."The law was passed in 1931 to stop what it calls "gross lewdness." Unmarried, unrelated people of the opposite genders living together could face up to one year in prison and a ,000 fine.While it's hardly enforced, there is another reason to get it off the books."Because it's still statutory law, in certain tax situations, they have to consider that in doing their taxes."There have been unsuccessful attempts in the past to get rid of the law."It's an easy fix. There's a repealer statute in the senate committee. I'm hoping to get it out in the near future," Bieda added.Some say the law needs to go, but Michigan lawmakers should be focused on more important things.Mississippi is the only other state with a similar law, but lawmakers there are trying to do away with their law too. 1139

It was a moment one lucky Norfolk, Virginia couple didn’t know was coming.Derek Page and his fiancée, Veronica Singer, got a one-of-a-kind gift Sunday for their upcoming wedding in October.“I knew my brother was planning something, but I had no idea it would be this,” explained Derek.Derek’s brother, Alex Page, planned the surprise after coming across a Facebook post.“Instead of getting something off their registry, something that’s replaceable, I just thought it’d be a fun, unique different gift that creates a lasting memory,” said Alex Page.32-year-old Miles Hoyle surprised the couple on their porch by playing a variety of songs on his accordion. The accordionist has been playing the squeezebox for 13 years.The performances are something he calls 'Accordion-at-your-Door' where Hoyle plays songs for special occasions and celebrations - one note and one doorstep at a time.“I enjoy it a lot,” Hoyle said. “I think it helps bring them a little joy too, at least I hope so.”Hoyle started playing outside of people’s homes before the pandemic but said business ramped up right after the stay-at-home order went into effect.“I’ve also played outside a few restaurants on their porches,” he said.Hoyle also plays the accordion in his two bands, The Fighting Jamesons and Mosquito Cabaret, but as the COVID-19 crisis put most live entertainment on pause, his solo performances picked up traction.“I think it’s a win-win for everybody,” Hoyle said.The final song Hoyle played for the couple was Elvis Presley’s “Can’t help falling in love.” The couple applauded after the 15-minute show ended. Derek Page said the surprise left them with lasting memories.“I could not have even expected this, not in a million years,” he said. “This was amazing. The state's minimum age is 18.
