(KGTV) - Hundreds of animals evacuated due to the Valley Fire are staying at county shelters.The San Diego County Department of Animal Services and the San Diego Humane Society are working together to rescue animals and care for them until they can be reunited with their owners.Nearly 300 pets and livestock are currently staying at the San Diego County of Department of Animal Services shelter in Bonita and the Iron Oak Canyon Ranch on Campo Road in Spring Valley.All horses should be brought to the Lakeside Rodeo Arena.Alma Pereda brought her dogs to the shelter in Bonita after the hotel she was evacuated to did not accept pets."Pretty hectic trying to get what we can, rescue first your family and then your pets," Pereda.Kelly Campbell is the director of the county's Department of Animal Services."We're working to try to support folks do have teams out in the field who are scouting in areas that may have been inaccessible for evacuations, welfare checks on animals, "said Campbell.They're also trying to balance the needs of pet owners with the requirements of the pandemic."They love their animals, want to come and see them, but need to make sure not in closed quarters due to COVID," said Campbell.Household pets are still being accepted at the shelter in Bonita, but it's at capacity for large animals. BOSTON, Mass. – A statue of Christopher Columbus was beheaded in Boston.A WHDH photographer discovered the vandalism at Christopher Columbus Park on Atlantic Avenue shortly after midnight on Wednesday.WHDH reports that the same statue was vandalized with red paint and the phrase “Black Lives Matter” in 2015. And in 2006, the head was broken off and went missing for six days before it was put back on, WHDH says.The city’s mayor, Marty Walsh, told WBZ-TV that the statue will be put in storage and there will be conversations about the “historic meaning” of the incident and whether it will ever go back up.This Massachusetts statue is one of many that have been vandalized, taken down or destroyed amid the ongoing protests over racial justice following the death of George Floyd.Another statue of Christopher Columbus in Richmond, Virginia, was torn down by protesters, set on fire and then thrown into a lake on Tuesday night, WTVR reports.In other states, there’s a renewed movement to remove confederate statues and monuments, which some say glorify the Civil War-era South. Statues were recently removed from Indianapolis and Jacksonville.And in Richmond, the former capitol of the Confederacy, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam has announced plans to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. BALTIMORE, Md. - "I never thought that I would be on Facebook again, and going on Facebook is literally what changed my life."It was a lifesaving change for Rachel Rockwell.Her old classmate Kate Corzine would be her agent of change.“After having this condition for 12 years and knowing that I eventually needed to look for a liver donor, the time had come.”Rachel opened up on Facebook about her autoimmune disease, Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis. She needed a transplant to survive.She and Kate hadn't spoken in about 15 years.Kate, a nurse, and mother of five did her research on live liver transplants answered Rachel's call for help."I approached my husband and said an old classmate of mine Rachel needs help and I think that this is something that we can do. I'd like to offer my help and after hearing a bit more he said, go for it."There was an outpouring of support for Rachel on social media. More than 50 people responded, but Kate ended up being the perfect match.They met for lunch two weeks prior to their Sept. 29 surgery date in the middle of a pandemic."It has been a challenging year for a lot of people and to have this hope that is shared and the joy that comes from it, it's pretty amazing."There's a lot of darkness and for people to see an opportunity for light and then see that happen so abundantly with Kate is very moving."While Rachel's grateful for Kate, both women are grateful for the medical team at Johns Hopkins that made it happen.Their surgeon, Dr. Andrew Cameron says the amazing story of Kate's willingness to share more than half of her liver with a former classmate.... is a testament to the importance of transplants.Their road to recovery is smooth so far.....Kate's liver is regenerating....and Rachel is on the mend with her PSC thanks to her new organ.“I'm on a lot of medication to keep the liver happy, Kate's liver happy, but a year from now it'll probably seem like my liver."While the two shared sisterhood at Bryn Mawr graduating from the girls' school in 1997. Because obesity is a high-risk factor for COVID-19, there’s been an increased interest in bariatric surgery during the pandemic.Now, there's some evidence the procedure does in fact lower a person's risk of severe symptoms.“When the metabolic profile of the patients improve, patients are getting healthier and seem like they can fight the virus stronger and their outcomes are going to be better,” said Dr. Ali Aminian, Director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at the Cleveland Clinic.The Bariatric and Metabolic Institute identified patients who had weight loss surgery prior to getting COVID and matched them against a control group of obese patients who also got COVID-19. Only 18% of those who had surgery were hospitalized with COVID-19, compared to 42% of the obese patients.None of the people in the surgery group ended up in the ICU, on a ventilator or died. Some in the obesity group did.Doctors believe because they had surgery, that group was healthier.Aminian says the number of bariatric patients at the Cleveland Clinic is almost double what it was last year. He stressed it’s a very safe, but not simple procedure.“It's a tool. It's a very safe tool. It's a very effective tool,” he said. “We help them in the journey, but patients need to use the tools to succeed.”Bariatric surgery candidates meet with a dietitian, psychologist, regular doctor and surgeon both before and after surgery.Despite the evidence of weight loss and surgery improving numerous conditions, access is still an issue. Breonna Taylor's mother, Tamika Palmer, requested a new special prosecutor to review her daughter's case. During a meeting Friday, the Kentucky Prosecutors Advisory Council voted not to approve her request.Tamika Palmer and her attorneys argue Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron did not accurately explain the law to the grand jurors, present evidence correctly, and perform the job bias-free.Which leads to their request of having a new prosecutor appointed to Breonna Taylor's case.While the Kentucky Prosecutors Advisory Council can replace a local prosecutor with the attorney general, the council noted they do not have the legal authority to replace the attorney general."No basis in case law or statute exists for the prosecutor advisory council to appoint a new, independent prosecutor as requested by Ms. Palmer," Chris Cohron, the Commonwealth's Attorney for the Eighth Judicial Circuit in Bowling Green.The council voted unanimously. As soon as the council made its decision, the people watching the virtual meeting spoke out, with one person saying, "You're wrong, and you know it."That's the end of the legal road for Breonna Taylor's family regarding state or criminal penalties.
