Mack Beggs defended his Texas wrestling state title on Saturday by winning the girls Class 6A 110-pound class, to the chagrin of some of those in attendance in Cypress, Texas, the Dallas Morning News reported. Beggs, who was born female, is a transgender male who is only allowed to wrestle against girls. Texas' University Interscholastic League requires that athletes compete in the gender listed on their birth certificate. Beggs told the Dallas Morning News that he has not gone through any gender reassignment surgeries. But that did not stop those in the crowd from heckling Beggs. "They're saying 'steroids.' They're saying, 'Oh, they're beating up on girls,'" he told the Morning News. "It just comes down to technique and who has the most heart. I put too much blood, sweat and tears, I put too much B.S. into this journey that I wanted to come out on top."If Beggs had his choice, he would be competing against boys. "What can I tell people? I can tell the state legislature to change the policy, but I can't tell them to change it right now," Beggs told reporters. "All I can hope for is that they come to their [senses] and realize this is stupid and we should change the policies to conform to other people in my position."Among those who believe it was not a fair bout was Beggs' semifinal opponent Kayla Fitts, who went 52-0 as a senior for Cypress Ranch High School. "The strength definitely was the difference. I didn't anticipate how strong he was," Fitts told the Morning News."I understand if you want to transition your gender," she added. "I understand that totally. But there's a time and a place."Part of the issue has been that Beggs is taking a low dose of testosterone. Miguel Diaz-Canel was officially named as the new leader of Cuba on Thursday, one day after a vote in the country's National Assembly.It's the first time in nearly six decades that Cuba is being led by a man not named Castro.Diaz-Canel, 57, was selected as the unopposed candidate to replace Raul Castro, 86. Castro embraced Diaz-Canel -- who wasn't yet born when Fidel Castro led his revolution in 1959 -- during Wednesday's session, all but sealing his status as the island's next president.Raul Castro is still expected to exercise a large measure of control over the Cuban government and have the final say on important decisions. He will remain first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, a member of the National Assembly and, even if he is no longer president, the most powerful public figure on the island.  832

They traveled thousands of miles from Central America with hope for a better life in America.One young man told 10 News he was fleeing violence, saying police attacked him and stole from him. He hopes for more opportunities, like a job and education in the U.S.Alfonso Rosales saw the migrants as he came over the border, saying in Spanish, they were excited and happy, cheering that they've reached their goal.Several immigrants told 10 News in Mexico they were scared, afraid what the process would entail and of being turned away.One father, Pedro Ismael Varela, said he's worried about being separated from his young son.At the border agents stopped the caravan saying they were at capacity. Members of the group say there's about 20 people waiting at the door for their turn, and the rest of the group waiting in Mexico.The port of entry is a 24 hour operation, and will be open overnight to process people wanting to come through the border."A lot of them get detained, some of them not, that’s the next step, it’s case by case," Alor Calderon, Director of Employer Rights Center said. He added that his role at the border was an "observer" to ensure the migrants are being processed fairly and appropriately.He said those in the caravan understand they could end up in a detention facility, and they're okay with it, "Yes because they’re they’re escaping what they feel is death and escaping what they think is a life without possibilities." 1728

Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's former personal attorney, pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court Tuesday to eight criminal counts, admitting that "in coordination and at the direction of a candidate for federal office" he acted to keep information that would have been harmful to the candidate and the campaign from becoming public during the 2016 election cycle.The charges against Cohen, an attorney for Trump until earlier this year and a member of his inner circle throughout his presidential campaign, bring an end to a months-long investigation by the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York. MIAMI, Fla. – The extremely active 2020 Atlantic hurricane season came to an end Monday and coastal communities are breathing a sigh of relief.However, while the hurricane season officially concludes on Nov. 30, that doesn’t necessarily mean the United States is out of the woods. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says tropical storms may continue to develop past that day.Even without more storms, this season has been historic. We saw a record-breaking 30 named storms and 12 landfalling storms in the continental U.S., according to the NOAA. Before this year, the 2005 season held the record for the most named storms, with 28.Of this season’s 30 named storms, 13 of them became hurricanes, meaning winds were 74 mph or greater. Six of those were considered major hurricanes, with winds reaching at least 111 mph: Laura, Teddy, Delta, Epsilon, Eta, and Iota.Because the 2020 season got off to an early and rapid pace, officials quickly exhausted the 21-name Atlantic list when Wilfred formed in September.So, for only the second time in history, the Greek alphabet was used for the remainder of the season, extending through the ninth name in the list, Iota.“The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season ramped up quickly and broke records across the board,” said Neil Jacobs, Ph.D, acting NOAA administrator. “Our investments in research, forecast models, and computer technology allowed forecasters at the National Weather Service, and its National Hurricane Center, to issue forecasts with increasing accuracy, resulting in the advanced lead time needed to ensure that decision makers and communities were ready and responsive.”NOAA says this was the fifth consecutive year with an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season, with 18 above-normal seasons out of the past 26.Scientists attribute the increase in activity to the warm phase of the Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation (AMO), which NOAA says began in 1995 and has favored more, stronger and longer-lasting storms. These kinds of eras have historically lasted about 25 to 40 years.“As we correctly predicted, an interrelated set of atmospheric and oceanic conditions linked to the warm AMO were again present this year. These included warmer-than-average Atlantic sea surface temperatures and a stronger west African monsoon, along with much weaker vertical wind shear and wind patterns coming off of Africa that were more favorable for storm development. These conditions, combined with La Nina, helped make this record-breaking, extremely active hurricane season possible,” said Gerry Bell, Ph.D, lead seasonal hurricane forecaster at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center.Looking forward, the 2021 hurricane season will officially begin on June 1 and NOAA will issue its initial seasonal outlook in May. 2787
