SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid rising health care costs, some San Diegans are turning to telehealth appointments. On a Monday afternoon, young Josephine sits in an exam room. She's come down with cold-like symptoms after recovering from enlarged tonsils. So her mom, Josie Ruiz, brought her to their neighborhood clinic, La Maestra Community Health Center in City Heights. For this appointment, one doctor is waiting in the exam room, and another is on a computer screen.Dr. Anthony Magit is an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist and pediatrician at Rady Children's Hospital. As he watches from his office, the clinic's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Javier Rodriguez, conducts an exam. Cameras and camera-equipped scopes feed real-time data to the specialist, who then asks questions. The exam is part of La Maestra's telehealth program, which offers virtual appointments to underserved patients."Before telehealth, my previous appointments ... some of them I had to cancel or reschedule," said Ruiz.Ruiz is a single mom who works full time."This is great because in my case I don't have to request a day off to take her to the hospital, which I can't afford to do," said Ruiz.Most of the patients at this clinic don't own cars. For them, getting to Rady Children's Hospital means hours on buses, which can lead to major issues related to work and child care.Six years ago, doctors at the clinic discovered many referrals to Rady Children's Hospital weren't showing up. That has changed. No-show rates went from about 50% to 13% within two years. Across the county, other hospitals are tuning in to telemedicine, from home appointments for rural patients to consultations with specialists across the country. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A teen in San Diego has written a children's book, which she hopes can help in the fight against cancer.Sophia Namazy, 14, wrote "Pigtails, Ponytails, and Fairytales" after seeing her little sister wake up every morning with messy hair. In the book, a pair of fairies come at night and play with it. Sophia says it's loosely based on her sister, Poppy."Her hair was really crazy and frizzy in the morning," says Sophia. "So every morning it would be like that, and I would sketch about it. And I thought I might as well make it into a book."Now that it's published, she's decided to donate all the money from sales to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.Namazy picked that location because it's where her twin brother, Max, goes every year for treatment.Max has a rare blood disorder called Schwachman-Diamond syndrome. His body doesn't produce enough white blood cells."I want other kids to know they're not alone, and they're not going through this alone," Sophia says."I'm really proud of Sophia, writing a book," says Max. "It just makes me happy that she's writing a book for me, to me, and helping support the cancer institute."Their mother, Jennifer Namazy, says the book has helped the family support each other."It's very emotional, but it really helps us all think about how a medical disorder in a family can affect everybody," she says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After releasing a new study showing the link between free, unstructured play and increased brain development, doctors may now start prescribing playtime for young children.The study, titled "The Power of Play" by the American Academy of Pediatrics, says free, unstructured play, "is brain building, a central part of healthy child development, a key to executive function skills, and a buffer against the negative impacts of stress. Furthermore, play builds the bond between parent and child."The study blames an increase in strict scheduling, more screen time and parents' safety concerns as reasons why play time has dropped by as much as 25% over the last 30 years.The AAP is now advising its member-pediatricians to prescribe playtime to kids when they come in for wellness exams and check-ups."The benefits of play cannot really be overstated in terms of mitigating stress, improving academic skills and helping to build the safe, stable and nurturing relationships that buffer against toxic stress and build social-emotional resilience," says Michael Yogman, MD, FAAP, lead author of the AAP report.Local child development experts in San Diego agree, saying free play gives kids life-long skills."That's exactly what children need, especially in pre-school," says Andrea Wilson, the Manager at Rady Children's Hospital's Alexa's Playful Learning Academy for Young Children."That's the opportunity for them to turn-take, build empathy, use their communication skills, learn to be team players."Wilson's school emphasizes unstructured play in its classes. She says parents need to take part at home too, by giving kids choices when they play and letting them lead the way."Tell them, 'You can play with this toy, you can play with that toy,' and see what they want to do from there," says Wilson. "Also ask a lot of open-ended questions and learn with them as well."According to the study, screen-time is one of the biggest reasons kids aren't free-playing anymore. Wilson says it's easy to give kids an alternative, even when they're away from home."Having a bag of books, crayons and manipulative toys is always a better option than putting a screen in front of them," she says.As for how much free play kids need, the study doesn't give a specific set limit. Instead, it says that even as little as 15 minutes of free play showed positive results in kids' stress levels when compared to 15 minutes of being read to.The report also says that parents and doctors need to push schools towards scheduling more recess time, so kids have the chance to explore on their own. 2616

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A showdown is brewing between two San Diego County supervisors about the reopening of the local economy amid the coronavirus pandemic.In a video on his Twitter account, Supervisor Jim Desmond said current California metrics make it impossible for the county to full reopen.During a Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, Desmond plans to ask the county to not follow the state’s tier system, which determines when more businesses can reopen.Desmond said on Twitter: “San Diego has been backed into a corner. The State has given us impossible guidelines, which will keep businesses closed or limited for many more months! SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An apparent SDG&E scam reported by a North County couple turned out to be an actual warning to evacuate, just not for them.The power company is calling a recent interaction with a Poway family a "misunderstanding," after the family believed they had been scammed by someone posing as the company.The Chavez family told 10News this week they received a phone call from someone saying they worked for SDG&E, telling them they needed to evacuate their home while work was being using a helicopter.The message said, “it requires a helicopter. The helicopter is required from the FAA to have certain properties, like yourself, evacuate the home.”ORIGINAL STORY: Family urging San Diegans to be aware of a possible new SDG&E scamAfter calling SDG&E to confirm, they were told there was no work going on in their area. The family believed they had been scammed. But it turns out, the phone call was true — for a different neighborhood.According to SDG&E, FAA does require residents to leave their homes when work is being done in their area requiring a helicopter and special construction.However, when the Chavez family called SDG&E, they didn't use the number the original caller provided.
