Quincy Jones is the director at Sage Truck Driving School and says there are a few reasons why people aren’t becoming drivers.“Part of the reason is because the average truck driver is 55 years old and with the shortage of millennials coming in," Jones said.With drivers retiring and young people choosing four-year degrees, it's affecting deliveries. Companies like Coke, Hershey’s and General Mills have all said they have to pay more to get their items shipped to stores, which means wallets take a hit."I think ecommerce has a lot to do with it — just with the demand of everybody having to order stuff to have it delivered to their houses instead of actually going out and shopping for it,” Jones said.Being a truck driver can be a lucrative job right out of the gate, and it only takes four weeks of training. That’s one of the reason Sage student Miguel decided to sign up.“The money is really good, especially in this field — and I mean it’s just a lot to offer, benefits and money,” Miguel said.With a shortage of drivers, some companies are offering big signing bonuses for those considering driving. Solo drivers could receive a ,000 signing bonus, and team drivers could receive up to ,000.Jones believes more people would become drivers if they could afford the training.“With increased funding from the government helping with these new students through and getting them into the industry I think that’s a possible way,” he said.Even though Miguel is sacrificing a lot starting this career, he knows it’s beneficial to everyone.“It’s a full cycle. GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers overnight killed the bear they suspect attacked a 5-year-old girl early Sunday morning near Grand Junction.CPW says they saw the bear they believe to have been involved in the attack walking up to a home about a half-mile away from where the girl was attacked in east Orchard Mesa. The bear was killed before it entered one of three traps that had been set.The agency said officers are “confident” the bear is the same one involved in the attack based on its behavior, but they will continue searching for other bears in the area.The bear’s carcass will be transported to the CPW Wildlife Health Laboratory in Fort Collins for a necropsy."The necropsy, along with DNA results will provide the confirmation, but we are confident we have the right bear," said Area Wildlife Manager Kirk Oldham. "However, we will leave all three traps in place for the time being out of an abundance of caution."The girl, 5-year-old Kimberly Cyr, had gone outside around 2:30 a.m. Sunday to investigate noises she thought were coming from her dog, her mother told CPW officials.But the mother heard her daughter screaming and went outside to see a “large black bear” dragging her daughter. The bear dropped the girl when her mother screamed.Cyr was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction, where she received around six-dozen stitches, her mother said. GENEVA (AP) — The European Union’s Earth observation program says the ozone hole over Antarctica has swelled to its largest size and deepest level in years.Experts at the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service say a strong, stable and cold polar vortex has driven the expansion, and have called for greater international efforts to ensure countries abide by an international accord to phase out use of ozone-depleting chemicals.Vincent-Henri Peuch, who heads the service, said in a statement that the ozone hole was “definitely” among the largest in the last 15 years.“With the sunlight returning to the South Pole in the last weeks, we saw continued ozone depletion over the area,” Peuch said. “After the unusually small and short-lived ozone hole in 2019, which was driven by special meteorological conditions, we are registering a rather large one again this year, which confirms that we need to continue enforcing the Montreal Protocol banning emissions of ozone depleting chemicals.”Since the ban on halocarbons, officials say the ozone layer has slowly been recovering and data shows a trend in decreasing area of the ozone hole.Ozone depletion over the Antarctic continent was first noticed in 1985. 1217

From disproportionately ticketing students of color to mishandling special needs children, some school districts say School Resource Officers, more commonly called SROs, should no longer be in the halls.For Heidi Laursen and her son, Jack, who live in Colorado, the presence of officers in the young boy’s elementary school created a traumatic environment.“I wish they would’ve recognized that he was having trouble,” said Laursen, the mother of the special needs student.Laursen never imagined her son would have such big problems with the police in school.“When they couldn’t handle him or didn’t know what to do with him, they sent him to the security officer,” said Laursen.Laursen said her son was in kindergarten when he began coming home from school unhappy.“He would say, ‘I’m a bad kid, I’m a bad kid, you should get rid of me,'” she said. “And he was 5,” said Heidi.In the process of waiting to get Jack assessed for a special needs class, Laursen got called to the school to pick her son up.“I walked in and he was across the classroom from me by the windows being held by two officers by his feet and his hands, and he was writhing in the air between them,” she said.It’s a sight she said can’t erase from her mind. “I can talk about it now without crying, but I couldn’t for a long time,” said Laursen.Laursen and many other parents and students who have had similar experiences say something needs to change with how schools police students.After much public discussion, Denver Public Schools voted to remove police officers from schools.“While we leaned on the SROs for the ideals of safety, our students were getting ticketed at very high rates, particularly students of color, and another group of students who are handcuffed a lot are special needs students,” said the school board’s vice president, Jennifer Bacon.Bacon said the district is forming a task force to change that reality. “That looks like, mental health support in buildings, social workers in buildings, counselors and academic support,” said Bacon. The task force will spend the next year and a half forming solutions.Currently, there are 18 Denver Police officers working as SROs in Denver Public Schools. The board voted to take that number down by 25 percent by the end of this calendar year, and by the end of next school year, there will no longer be a permanent police presence in Denver Schools.“It’s not lost on us the work we have to do around safety, but safety is also culture, and this is the time we need to talk to children about their feelings,” said Bacon. “We’ll also talk to our staff about preventative measures for students who have ideations of suicide or community harm.”“I think there’s a positive way to support kids that doesn’t have to be with the threat of law,” said Laursen.Bacon said her own experience with law enforcement in school shaped her vision for the future.“When people heard what school I went to, they had an assumption about me,” said Bacon. “That I couldn’t be an honors student, that they had to clutch their purses…and part of that was reinforced by having police officers in my schools and not having officers in schools that were predominantly white."That emotional impact is something Bacon hopes will be erased for students like Jack.“To the extent that little schools can do something to tell them that their lives matter, that if they’re in crisis, if they’re hungry, doesn’t mean they’ll be met with handcuffs, is incredibly powerful. And we will take every opportunity to reset young people’s expectations on how they’ll be treated,” said Bacon.Laursen agrees. Changing our society starts with reshaping the way our young people grow up. “It does take time to find the right solution, but it’s possible,” she said. 3761
