SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Carmen Favela was part of the duo that kicked off the Mujeres Brew Club, a Latina-led group that started in 2019 and teaches women the history and basics of craft beer."I thought to myself I wonder how many more women would like to learn more about craft beer, not just enjoy it but understand all of it," Favela said. Up until the COVID-19 pandemic, the club held their meetings at Border X Brewing in Barrio Logan."There is no way I could just cancel it because of COVID-19 or just stop it, it’d be hard for me. It became something I honestly didn’t expect and I knew this was something we needed in the industry," Favela described.Thankfully, Favela didn't have to because the answer wasn't far. It was right across the street at an old vacant taproom brewhouse."It's got a full brewing system and a tap system. One conversation led to another and we were in the space within 24 hours," Favela said.The new space is where the brew club continued to hold its meetings and will make and serve craft beer."Yes, we are minorities and yes it is going to be Latinas and women, but the amount of support and excitement from the girls, from the public ... the beers we plan to make to make there will be an expression of all the girls from all different, all colors basically," Favela said.They served coffee and other non-alcoholics drinks until their licensing got approved, but inside, excitement was overflowing."I think this will hopefully open that door to really celebrate more women in beer in San Diego," said Favela. 1549

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - City leaders say the canyon near the 163 that caught fire Tuesday afternoon was overdue for tree trimming and a homeless flushing.The fire only burned 10 trees but it has many neighbors frustrated that the fire even started in the first place.“That was a pretty big one,” said Councilman Chris Ward on the fire, “we’re pretty scared here in the mid city neighborhoods with the urban canyons which catch fire from time to time.”Ward says he has been trying for over a year to get CalTrans and the City of San Diego to clear out the canyons.Officials have not announced the cause of the fire but it is believe to have been from a cooking fire started by homeless illegally camping.RELATED: Brush fire breaks out near 163“About a generation ago we lost 75 homes in Normal Heights to a canyon fire so this is a real, real danger.” said Ward, “We gotta take this seriously.” 896

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California’s Republicans are hoping to grow the party’s numbers in the state despite current odds.Roughly a quarter of California’s voters are registered Republican and in San Diego the GOP is seeing people jump ship.The San Diego GOP has lost thousands of voters in the last year with San Diego County Voter Registrar reporting 491,783 Republicans in May of 2018— compared to a little more 500,000 in May 2017.“A lot of that is the bullying or the stereotyping that goes on with being a conservative,” said Justin Clark, a 19-year-old conservative running for state assembly in Los Angeles, “you have a lot of people not wanting to identify as conservative, but a large portion of those 'undeclared to say' voters are.”The number of undeclared voters in San Diego is 476,186 in 2018 compared to approximately 461,000 just a year ago.“Whether your for or against the two-party system is irrelevant,” said Clark, “but its how those people feel. It’s why those decline to state numbers keep going up because they want to stay with them, they want to identify as them.”Among the California GOP’ers convening in San Diego the first weekend in May are other young faces.Morgan Murtaugh is a 25-year-old former news anchor running for Congress in California’s 53rd District, which is currently held by incumbent Democrat Susan Davis.Murtaugh says she’s gotten death threats over her conservative political leanings.“I mean my grandparents immigrated here from Mexico,” said Murtaugh, “I’m Mexican and I’m a woman. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Crowds gathering at Veterans Park in Ocean Beach may face fines if they don't follow the county's public health orders.Tuesday morning, city crews put up orange mesh fencing around the park, but a few hours later, witnesses took pictures of two men cutting the fence down.Residents and business owners have been complaining for weeks about large groups gathering on Wednesday evenings gathered to watch the drum circle and hang out in the park.Mark Winkie is the president of the Ocean Beach Town Council. He didn't agree with shutting down the park, but he didn't condone tearing down the fence, either."Disappointing what happened here this morning, but it's important for people to know, as a town council, we really would like education to come first, to notify people about what they need to do when gathering here on such large quantities on a Wednesday," said Winkie.The public health orders banning gatherings of more than ten have been in place for months, but Winkie said it's possible not everyone is aware."Particularly for the drum circle, no city or county official has been out really interfacing with them, SDPD definitely came out, and I applaud their actions," said Winkie.Last week, police broke up the crowd, but did not issue citations.Councilmember Dr. Jennifer Campbell said it's time for enforcement."Everyday more San Diegans are dying, so we have to get tough and I'm telling you if this situation that happened last Wednesday night, happens this Wednesday night, there's gonna be a lot of clamp down, so they have got to stop it," Dr. Campbell said shouting.Violators could be fined up to ,000."By God, that is now the law and, therefore, the county sheriff should be out here arresting people who aren't wearing masks, who aren't distancing, and who are coming together," said Dr. Campbell.It's unclear if the city will put up a more permanent barrier or if anything will be in place by Wednesday evening. 1962

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities have identified the sailor who died after being struck by a spinning helicopter blade as 32-year-old Lt. James Mazzuchelli.Mazzuchelli was a flight surgeon assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 267, Marine Aircraft Group 39 and was stationed at MCAS Camp Pendleton.Mazzuchelli is from Orange Park, Florida and was previously deployed to Japan.RELATED: Sailor hit by spinning helicopter blade at MCAS Camp Pendleton dies“Lt. His willingness to join the Navy and elect to serve faithfully with the Marines should give a sense of pride to all of us who serve our country that we are surrounded by heroes every day.
