BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese military official has urged soldiers and officers to learn from the older generations' self-sacrifice and hardworking spirit in completing missions and ensuring the security of the country.Guo Boxiong, Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission, made the remarks Tuesday at a symposium to mark the 100th birthday of Yang Dezhi, former Vice Minister of Defense and Chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).Yang, born in 1911, participated in a series of wars and made great contributions to the liberty of the Chinese people and the founding of the new China. WENCHANG, Hainan, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- China is building a science theme park in the middle of its newest spaceport to promote space science among the country's younger generation.The theme park, covering an area of 1,800 mu (120 hectares) in Wenchang City, southern Hainan Province, is located at the Wenchang Satellite Launch Center. The project is estimated to cost 3 billion yuan (455 million U.S. dollars) and is expected to be finished in 2013, the theme park's designers said.Wenchang Satellite Launch Center, whose construction began in 2007, is planned as the launch pad for China's lunar probe rocket in 2013.At the same time, the theme park will have four exhibition sections, featuring the earth, moon, Mars and the sun. Visitors can even enter parts of the launch station and watch the actual rocket launch, theme park construction officials said.The theme park is being built by China Aerospace International Holdings Limited, a Hong Kong listed arm of the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.There are currently three space launch sites in China, the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center and the Xichang Satellite Launch Center.
BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- China Friday protested two Japanese local assembly members' landing on an isle of the Diaoyu Islands, saying the move seriously infringed China's territorial sovereignty."The Diaoyu Islands and its adjacent islets have been an integral part of the Chinese territory since ancient times," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu reiterated Friday night.According to reports, two members of the municipal assembly of Ishigaki, Okinawa Prefecture, landed on an islet of the Diaoyu Islands and stayed there for a while Friday morning.Jiang said China has lodged a solemn representation and voiced strong opposition to the Japanese side.
BEIJING, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has urged more efforts to maintain steady and rapid economic growth and accelerate the transformation of the economic development pattern over the next five years.Li made the remarks Wednesday at a seminar on goals and policies of China's key 12th Five-year (2011-2015) Plan, according to a statement by the State Council, or China's Cabinet, on Thursday.At the seminar, the State Council solicited advice from senior officials of Tianjin Municipality, Jilin, Jiangsu, Henan, Yunnan and Gansu provinces, on the draft of the guidelines of the five-year plan.After listening to suggestions from provincial-level officials, Vice Premier Li said it is imperative for local governments to accelerate the transformation of the economic development pattern, while maintaining steady and rapid economic growth in the long term to benefit all Chinese people.As for the work next year, Li said local governments should more actively and prudently handle the relationship between keeping steady and rapid economic development, restructuring the economy and managing inflation expectations."More efforts should be provided to stabilize prices next year," he told the seminar.When planning goals and strategies for the development over the next five years, Li said, major indicators, such as the economic growth rates, should be defined "reasonably" and binding targets should be emphasized.Over the next five years, China will open wider to the outside world, expand its domestic consumption, push the reform of the income distribution system, create more jobs and improve its basic public service and social security system, he said.Li noted that local governments should work hard to allow residents' income growth to keep pace with the economic growth rate, and assure that laborers' wage hikes reflect productivity increases.
