SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - — San Diegans are not allowing the pandemic to dampen their holiday spirit. This much was apparent at the beginning of Taste of December Nights.Within moments of its opening Friday, a line of cars streamed down Park Boulevard, waiting for a chance to order food from about a dozen vendors lined up at Inspiration Point in Balboa Park. "We've been going to December nights every year, but we didn't want to miss it this year," said Jasper Pascual, of National City, who came with his girlfriend Wendee. "It's something new, something interesting."The pandemic has upended decades of tradition, including December Nights in Balboa Park. Thousands normally pack the event in Balboa Park, enjoying holiday decorations, museums and food. This year, the event is a drive through for food vendors, with participants required to stay in their cars and wear masks. Pedestrians, bicyclists and scooter riders are not allowed. "This event obviously is re-imagined, it's different, but again I think it's the type of event that I think is just what some folks will need," Mayor Kevin Faulconer said as he kicked off the event. A worker from one of the eateries comes to the window, takes an order, and eventually brings the food. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of Black student leaders from Poway Unified School District schools met last week with administrators, principals and counselors to discuss ways to address issues of racism and inequality in the district.The students are the presidents of the Black Student Unions at each of PUSD's five high schools.It was the first meeting since the student leaders sent an email asking to see changes in the district to improve the lives of students of color."Making PUSD not just not racist but transparently anti-racist," said Jade Thompson, president of the BSU at Rancho Bernardo High School.Thompason helped write the email, which also talked about the recently created Instagram account "Black in PUSD,” which anonymously details students' experiences with racism."We just think it was a great way to open up people's eyes cause people like to say not in this community," said Thompson.Superintendent Dr. Kim Phelps agrees, saying, "To hold people accountable, including the district and our teachers and everybody ... I'm proud of our students for doing that.”Phelps and Thompson both described the meeting as productive and positive.Among the issues discussed were student education and assemblies addressing racism. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Virulent Newcastle disease was detected this weekend at a property in central San Diego County, a state veterinarian said Sunday. Friday's detection was identified when a private veterinarian submitted dead birds to the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System, according to state veterinarian Dr. Annette Jones. Response team members from the California Department of Food and Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are working through the Labor Day weekend on control measures, including restriction of bird movement, mandatory euthanasia of infected and exposed birds, and surveillance testing near the property where infection was detected. "We are moving quickly to investigate the origin of disease as well as any movement of birds or equipment that could carry infection," Jones said in a statement. Detections of virulent Newcastle disease have decreased greatly over the last few months, she said. "Our priority remains to stop the spread of the virus and eradicate the disease," Jones said."We have made significant progress toward this goal by identifying and clearing remaining pockets of disease, but this case reminds all bird owners in Southern California to remain aware of VND signs, practice good biosecurity, stop illegal movement of birds from property to property, and report any sick birds immediately to the Sick Bird Hotline, 866-922-2473."Members of the 'home flock' community encourage keeping your birds where they are, wash your hands, change your clothes and shoes after contact with the birds to prevent the spread of the disease.The disease put California on a quarantine, keeping businesses from buying new chickens, leaving cages empty. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Wreath-laying ceremonies were held at cemeteries around the county Saturday to honor the military veterans buried there.The ceremonies are part of the larger Wreaths Across America project.More than 1,000 cemeteries across the country participated, including Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. According to Wreaths Across America, the events are an effort to preserve the memory of military veterans and teach children about the sacrifices they make and have made."Each and every wreath is a gift from an appreciative person or family who knows what it means to serve and sacrifice for the freedoms we all enjoy," said Wreaths Across America Executive Director Karen Worcester.
