SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The preliminary hearing got underway Wednesday for a case that saw the California Highway Patrol reverse course on blame months after a deadly wrong-way crash.Lauren Freeman appeared in court almost a year to the day of the deadly wrong crash on the transition ramp between I-5 and I-8 near Old Town about 2 a.m. Justin Callahan, 35 , who was driving a Volkswagen Jetta, died at the scene, while Freeman and her passenger in a Toyota Camry suffered serious injuries in the crash.The CHP initially thought Callahan was driving the wrong way, eastbound in the westbound lanes, but family members told 10News it didn't make sense because he should have been heading to Ocean Beach from the South Bay after work, and not away from it. After a more thorough probe, investigators determined it was Freeman who was driving the wrong way and driving under the influence. Officers arrested her in November on charges including murder and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated."We're just hoping for justice. The truth came out through the CHP and now we have the justice system to go through," said Tommy Villafranca, Callahan's brother.On the stand, one witness says he was driving on I-8 headed toward Sunset Cliffs, when he and his passenger saw a light-colored 4-door car race past him going the wrong way."I was in the car ... noticed headlights coming in my direction. You see it and by the time it registers, it drove past me ... it was crazy," said Valentino Asuncion IV.10News reached out to a contingent of Freeman's supporters, who declined to comment. The hearing will stretch into Thursday, when the judge will decide if it heads to trial. 1674

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three dogs are getting a second chance at life. Wednesday night they were reunited with a local Marine - after months of being apart. Marine Corps Captain Kyle Watkins has been waiting months to see the dogs he rescued as puppies while stationed in Iraq. Wendy, Hesco and Rooster were flown to the states to be adopted by Watkins and another Marine with the help of SPCA International and Operation Baghdad Pups.Watkins says he couldn't help but feed and care for the dogs, who in turn began to look out for him; their big brown eyes and wagging tails bringing comfort during some rough times. Two of the dogs will stay with Watkins and his wife on their farm in Temecula, the third will be adopted by another Marine.  776

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Tommy Bahama is known for its selection of tropical clothes and button-up shirts, but will soon add exotic drinks and dishes to its list in Mission Valley.The retail chain says it's set to open a Tommy Bahama Marlin Bar at Fashion Valley Mall in Spring 2020. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System is joining the effort to make more affordable housing. The MTS Board of Directors recently greenlit a new 410-unit housing development at the Grantville trolley station. 156 of the units will be affordable and 254 will be market rate ‘student-oriented’ apartments. MTS is partnering with developers Affirmed Housing and Greystar on the project. It is estimated the total population housed on the planned trolley station property will be 1,049 people. The development would be built on top of the current parking lot. The developers will be making their own parking spaces on the site and MTS will be adding 96 replacement parking spots, according to transit officials. In a statement on the prospective parking concerns MTS wrote, “we average about 80 to 120 commuters per weekday that use the park and ride, so we are in the wheelhouse of demand.” MTS says it is currently looking into developing four more of its stations into similar housing in downtown, El Cajon and Chula Vista. Construction is set to begin June 2020 and finish by June 2022. 1116
