LOS ANGELES (CNS) - County public health officials said have ordered the continued closure of LA Apparel's manufacturing facilities in South Los Angeles, announcing that more than 300 workers have been confirmed with the coronavirus and four have died. The company's manufacturing complex on 59th Street was originally closed June 27 after inspectors found "flagrant" violations of infection- control protocols and the company "failed to cooperate" with the county's investigation of what were then about 150 total infections.According to the county Department of Public Health, an official order was issued Thursday mandating the "continuous closure" of the facility.Officials with LA Apparel could not be reached for comment Friday when county officials announced the extended closure."The death of four dedicated garment workers is heartbreaking and tragic," public health director Barbara Ferrer said in a statement. "Business owners and operators have a corporate, moral and social responsibility to their employees and their families to provide a safe work environment that adheres to all of the health officer directives -- this responsibility is important, now more than ever, as we continue to fight this deadly virus."Public health officials said Friday three workers from the plant died in early June, and one more died this month. The agency began investigating conditions at the plant on June 19 after being notified by a "concerned health care provider."According to the department, investigators asked the company for a list of all employees so it could be compared with testing results, but the company failed to provide it.In late June, inspectors found violations at the facility of distancing requirements and infection-control protocols, according to the department, noting that the company was using cardboard as a barrier between workers. On July 4, the company sent the department an "incomplete list" of employees, and by then 198 positive cases had been reported. But as of Friday, that number had risen to more than 300, according to the public health agency.Health officials said that despite the company being ordered closed in late June, LA Apparel reopened the factory with new employees, and company officials tried to prevent health inspectors from entering the facility. 2309

LONDON — Trucks waiting to get out of Britain are backing up for miles and people are stranded at airports as many countries impose stringent travel restrictions over concerns about a new strain of the coronavirus that authorities say may spread more easily. A growing number of countries are halting air travel from the U.K., including Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Italy, and others are considering restrictions, like Sweden, South Africa and Hong Kong. Meanwhile France has banned trucks from the country for a period of 48 hours while the new variant is assessed. British Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said the strain is “out of control” around London and southeastern England — but experts have urged caution, saying it’s not clear if it’s more lethal. In an urgent message Saturday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson closed all non-essential shops, hairdressers, gyms, and pools, and told his country they would have to rethink their holiday plans. He said the new strain appears to be 70% more transmissible than existing strains, and British experts believe this strain is causing the explosive surge in cases in the UK. However, he added "there's no evidence to suggest it is more lethal or causes more severe illness," or that vaccines will be less effective. The World Health Organization and health experts from around the world are researching the new strain, and working to identify what makes it different. On Sunday, COVID-19 testing czar Admiral Brett Giroir told ABC's "This Week" that he doesn't believe a travel ban is necessary at this time. He said health officials around the world have seen almost 4,000 mutations of the coronavirus and there is "no indication" the UK's variant is "overcoming England.""I don't think there should be any reason for alarm right now," Giroir said. Areas that are in the country's top tier, tier 4, which include London and parts of the southeast section of the country, can only get together with their own household and only essential travel is permitted. Johnson also cut back a proposed "Christmas bubble" plan which would have allowed people in the UK to spend up to five days with another household. That has been changed to one day, and only in areas not in the tier 4 restrictions. There were rising hopes Monday that France would allow traffic to flow again, if truck drivers take coronavirus tests on arrival. 2393

LOS ANGELES (CNS) -- With coronavirus cases on the rise, municipalities in the Los Angeles area Thursday began to crack down on residents who flout the statewide requirement that they wear masks while in public. In West Hollywood, sheriff's Capt. Edward Ramirez issued a statement saying deputies have been working to educate violators about the requirement, but people who refuse could now face fines."Beginning this month, we will continue to utilize education and persuasion and hand out face masks, however, we will begin issuing city of West Hollywood Municipal Code citations to people who refuse to follow the face mask order while in public," he said."The citation, which is administrative and not criminal, is 0 plus a fee of for a total of 0 for the first offense," he said. "Our very least option is to conduct enforcement by issuing a citation, but the risk to community health is too great. To date, we have not issued any citations and we still hope not to."In neighboring Santa Monica, a new health order was announced Thursday in an effort to emphasize the need for face coverings. The order outlines the requirement for people to wear face coverings while in public, and for businesses to enforce the requirement for employees and customers. The revised Santa Monica order sets fines for violators at 0 for a first violation, 0 for a second violation and 0 for a third. For businesses, the fines start at 0, increasing to 0 for a second violation and ,000 for a third."As public health experts have shared widely this week, we are in a dangerous period with dramatic increases in cases and hospitalizations," Interim City Manager Lane Dilg said in a statement. "Face coverings are essential. I encourage everyone to try different styles to find what works for you. But it is a critical time to save lives by wearing face coverings whenever we are outside of our homes and not gathering with people outside of our households."The city of Beverly Hills has long been requiring residents to wear masks. It issued a reminder last week, noting that violators can face fines ranging from 0 for the first offense to 0 for the third and subsequent offenses.Gov. Gavin Newsom -- who made face coverings mandatory across the state on June 18 -- announced a "major public awareness campaign" about the requirement on Thursday. The campaign, backed by .75 million in donations, will feature a series public service announcements in a variety of languages. The announcements will be in the form of broadcast announcements and hundreds of billboards across the state. On Wednesday, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said local businesses should refuse service to anyone who refuses to wear a mask."If there's no mask, there should be no service," Garcetti said. The mayor noted that Los Angeles police have not been issuing citations for mask violators, saying the goal is to educate people in hopes of getting voluntary cooperation. 2974
