WASHINGTON (AP) — With time running out, lawmakers are closing in on a proposed COVID-19 relief bill that would provide roughly 0 in extra federal weekly unemployment benefits but not another round of ,200 in direct payments to most Americans. That's an issue that President-elect Joe Biden will have to wrestle over with a new Congress next year. The 8 billion aid package to be released Monday would be attached to a larger year-end spending bill that's needed to avert a government shutdown this coming weekend. The ,200 cash payments were popular when they were first distributed after the pandemic hit, and Biden has expressed hope that a second wave might come after weekend negotiations. 712

We see them everywhere. People are flying them all over the place, but there's a more serious, nefarious side to what should just be fun.Hackers are turning drones into devices that steal our personal information."It's got a bunch of peripherals…to hack basically anything over the air," Francis Brown, co-founder of Bishop Fox, said.Brown works to find holes in other companies' security systems. He says drones are now taking the bad guys where they're usually not allowed to go."Anything within the vicinity that's speaking over the air that's kind of an ideal platform to kind of just go land to do a drive by outside the window or go land on the roof and then hack something over the air, Brown said."Hackers attach a little computer called a Raspberry Pi to a drone. It looks like a big computer chip and then it's just flown around."These quad copters basically are little laptops with hacker tools on them," Brown said.Wireless, Blue Tooth, and R-F-I-D signals are all vulnerable, these drone can access places a normal hacker couldn't even reach."Buildings that are centrally located inside a corporate campus. There are you know near the street buildings where you couldn't necessarily see the Wi-Fi from the parking lot because it's a secure campus lesser or a wireless in a conference room on the 50th floor that witnesses are going to get from the ground,"  Brown said. So how often is this happening? Brown says it's tough to track, because companies are embarrassed to say if they've been hacked this way. He says the threat alone, should be a wake up call."One of the biggest advantages from a hacker's perspective is that it reduces your chances of getting caught is even more brazen," Brown said.Brown says anyone could be targeted, from an office park to your neighborhood block preventing drones from being there is extremely difficult.  Signal blockers in those frequencies to stop the drones from flying are illegal. 1961

WASHINGTON (AP) — The CEOs of Twitter, Facebook and Google have received a hectoring from Republicans at a Senate hearing for alleged anti-conservative bias in the companies’ social media platforms. And the CEOs are being put on notice about potential restrictions that may be coming. Some lawmakers are looking to challenge the companies' long-enjoyed bedrock legal protections for online speech. The protections stem from Section 230 of a 1996 communications law. Senators in the hearing extracted promises from Twitter's Jack Dorsey, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and Google's Sundar Pichai that their companies will take needed measures to help ensure election security.Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., asked the CEOs if they have a plan “if the president uses your platforms to say, on the day of the election, that there is rigging or fraud, without any basis in evidence, or attempts to say the election is over.”President Donald Trump has refused to publicly commit to accepting the results if he loses the presidential contest. He also has raised the baseless prospect of mass fraud in the vote-by-mail process.Testifying via video, the executives said their companies are taking a number of measures, including partnerships with news organizations to get out accurate information. Dorsey said Twitter was working closely with state election officials. “We want to give people using the service as much information as possible,” he said.Republicans, led by Trump, have accused the social media platforms, without evidence, of deliberately suppressing conservative, religious and anti-abortion views.Zuckerberg acknowledged that Congress “should update the law to make sure it’s working as intended.” Dorsey and Pichai urged caution in making any changes. The executives rejected accusations of bias. “We approach our work without political bias, full stop,” Pichai said. “To do otherwise would be contrary to both our business interests and our mission.”The companies have wrestled with how strongly they should intervene with speech. They have often gone out of their way not to appear biased against conservative views — a posture that some say effectively tilts them toward those viewpoints. The effort has been especially strained for Facebook, which was caught off guard in 2016, when it was used as a conduit by Russian agents to spread misinformation benefiting Trump’s presidential campaign. 2413

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is seeking to deny asylum to migrants caught crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally.New regulations will block migrants from claiming asylum if they do not come to an official border crossing. They are intended to speed up rulings on asylum claims, instead of having migrants try to circumvent official crossings on the nearly 2,000-mile (3,200-kilometer) border. The move was spurred in part by caravans of Central American migrants walking toward the border. They are now about 600 miles (965 kilometers) away. President Donald Trump has vowed to stop them from entering the country.RELATED: Camp Pendleton Marines sent to U.S.-Mexico borderThe new rules are subject to a presidential proclamation expected Friday in which Trump will invoke the same justification he did for the travel ban. The new rules will almost certainly face court challenges. 903
