A rare celestial event is about to take place over the morning skies of the United States on Monday involving the Sun and the planet Mercury. According to NASA, Mercury will pass directly between the Sun and Earth, causing a small part of the Sun to be obscured by Mercury’s shadow. Although the effect is similar to a solar eclipse — where the moon passes between the Sun and Earth — traditional solar eclipse glasses will not work for Monday’s transit. Whereas the moon is capable of blocking all of the Sun’s light from reaching the Earth, Mercury’s size and distance means only a fraction of the Sun will be blocked. That does not mean you’re out of luck. More than 60 astronomical groups across the United States will host viewing parties to allow the public to witness the rare celestial event. A telescope with a solar filter will make it possible for people to witness the transit. The transit will begin around 7:35 a.m. ET on Monday and last over 5 hours. For those in the western half of the U.S., the transit will last for a few hours after sunrise, allowing for most Americans the opportunity to witness the transit. AKRON, Ohio — A fight over hot dogs at a Speedway gas station in Ohio on Saturday night led to a wild brawl caught on video that started inside and spilled out into the parking lot, according to a police report.Shortly after midnight, police were flagged down at Speedway 390 East Exchange Street, for a reference to a fight. A 27-year-old woman said she was standing in line at Speedway with her friend when she let another female know that she shouldn’t steal a hot dog since the gas station has cameras.The female and her friends “didn’t take kindly to that comment” and they punched the 27-year-old woman, the report says.A Good Samaritan saw what was going on and attempted to get the group of females off of the 27-year-old woman. An Amber Alert has been issued for a Georgia toddler who was abducted by her non-custodial parent.Baylee Peeples, 1, was last seen wearing a pink shirt with hearts. She has blonde hair, blue eyes, and weighs about 25 pounds. She went missing Thursday in Jefferson, Georgia.She was abducted by her non-custodial parent, Robert Peeples, a 39-year-old man who is 5 feet 10 inches tall, about 190 pounds, with blue eyes and buzz cut hair.The two may be traveling in a white GMC van. A physical struggle between a woman and a group of squeegee kids ended with a gunshot.It happened just after 2 p.m. Wednesday in Baltimore.A woman called police and reported her gun went off after a group of squeegee kids surrounded and began reaching into her car while stopped at a light.The woman told police the group first sprayed her windshield. According to a police report, the group allegedly became very aggressive, and began demanding money, and damaging the car with the squeegee.The victim told officers the group refused to move, and there was no way to drive off without running them over.Out of fear, the woman told police she reached into her purse and grabbed a registered handgun, while still asking them to leave.One of the suspects then reportedly reached into the car and grabbed the woman's wrist, she was holding the gun with.After a struggle, the gun fired into the passenger seat of the victim's vehicle, causing the group to flee.Police say they were unable to find anyone in the group.In their report, the officer wrote the victim had all proper permits to carry the gun.The incident is the latest of many involving squeegee kids in Baltimore.This article was written by Brian Kuebler and Ryan Dickstein for WMAR. 1254
