SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local retiree is back home and recounting how a trip of a lifetime turned into a painful nightmare during a ride on a tour bus in Africa.Three weeks later, the pain remains constant. But Jeannette Craig, 68, is grateful."Just so glad to be back home," said Craig, from her hospital bed at Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center.After saving up for more than a year, the Santee woman set out on her dream vacation to southern Africa in September. She was on a tour bus headed to an elephant preserve in the country of Lesotho when the bus overturned, killing three and injuring the 12 others on board.RELATED: San Diego retiree injured in African tour bus tragedy"I was in shock. Things flying everywhere, people screaming. I was screaming, because I was hanging upside down. The guide couldn't unlatch me out of the seat belt, so he pulled me out and I dropped 4 feet," said Craig.Wearing that seatbelt, a habit of hers, saved her life. She says she'll never forget the grim sight of the injured mixed with the dead, as she was transported by helicopter to a clinic, then taken to another in South Africa.She was diagnosed with a fractured pelvis, a shattered leg and torn ligaments, and broken ribs.After her trip insurance initially refused to cover a medical flight home, her family got involved and eventually, the insurance covered the flight. Craig arrived a few days ago.At Kaiser Permanente, doctors would diagnose additional injuries, including blood clots in her leg and lung, and broken bones in her spine and chest.Craig faces a long difficult recovery. The adventuresome retiree is ready to face it."I look forward to physical therapy, I hope within a year, I'll be hiking," said Craig.That recovery will be a long one. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A North Park barber salon is on the brink of shutting down due to the coronavirus.Melissa and Christopher Cage met in high school. Melissa grew up in Watts and Christopher grew up in West L.A."I love it, you know, it made me who I am. It made me strong," Melissa said.Christopher said it was a dangerous place to grow up, "shootings, drive-bys, everything. That's why I wanted to get my kids away from that."They got married and in 2013, Christopher was laid off. They had three kids with a fourth on the way and at that moment he said he would never work for someone else again.He went to barber school. Five and a half years ago the family picked up and moved to San Diego with a dollar in Christopher's pocket."I think I gave my last dollar to a bum," he said, his wife nodding behind him. They were grateful to live in their aunt's living room as they saved up for a new place. They built up enough money to rent a run-down North Park house. They remodeled it and created Originality Barber Salon. Christopher has a row of barber chairs in the front half of the business and Melissa has a serene intimate salon in the back.Their challenges didn't end when the doors opened. Melissa said their biggest challenge was being accepted by the neighborhood.In 2018, someone spray-painted a racial slur in front of their shop. They cleaned it up and used it as motivation to succeed."I'm not going to fight hate with hate, I'm not going anywhere so you're just going to keep seeing me, so might as well," Melissa said.When the pandemic first hit, they kept their positive attitude, looking at it as a vacation."It was a vacation but then it started to get a longer vacation and I'm like okay, we're starting to dip into our savings now. I'm like we need to start figuring something out," she said.They were able to reopen for a few weeks, due to the county orders, and then, forced to close again.Multiple loan applications were denied. They said they were trudging through the permitting process to work outside. When Monday came and barbers could once again work indoors, Chris said it could be too late.They have a child with health issues, putting her at greater risk for catching the coronavirus, so they're trying to balance safety with finances.The couple said their goal of the business is to leave something for their children. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A nurse who works for the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility tested positive for coronavirus Wednesday, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department says. According to the department, the nurse has been isolated at home. No other information was provided about the individual's condition at this time. The department says it has identified inmates and staff who may have come into close contact with the nurse. INTERACTIVE MAP: Confirmed coronavirus cases in San Diego County"Following the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), no inmates who had contact with this nurse are currently in isolation," the department said. A total of nine employees are considered at low exposure risk. We have been providing comprehensive education to staff on how to reduce chances of exposure and infection. We are continually updating communications with employees to include the latest best practices for combating the virus through training bulletins, signage at Sheriff's facilities and daily updates via email. We have implemented social distancing, virtual meetings, working from home, as well as paused non-essential meetings, travel and training. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new scam appears to target local Amazon customers worried about being victims of package theft.Neighbors at the Escala community in Mission Valley say package thefts have been an ongoing problem for the last few years.Could the trend be providing fuel for a scam? A recent encounter at the housing complex could point to a new method by scammers.Adriana Alberdi, who has lived at the complex for a decade, said she and other residents received an email from the property management company describing a recent visitor.According to the email, the man — described as blond and in his early 20s — was wearing a lanyard connected to a tablet. He had business cards and claimed to work at Amazon. At one point, the man went to the on-site office pushing to install an Amazon Key device in homes. The new service allows Amazon to gain access to a home or car to deliver packages and keep them from getting stolen.The email says the man was "pushy" and "argumentative," before finally leaving. Amazon confirmed the man was not an employee."It's like you're getting robbed of your security. You don't know who to trust anymore," said Alberdi. "This is new. I have never heard about this."Amazon says their employees don't go door-to-door. Anyone interested in Amazon Key has to contact the company by phone or through their website. 1354

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Marine was killed in a hit-and-run accident in the Midway District just after 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night, according to San Diego Police.The victim, who was in his early 20's, was visiting an establishment with his friends earlier that night.At some point, his friends could not find him. Police said he walked or fell into the street in the 2700 block of Midway Drive.Police said a car hit him and took off toward Rosecrans Street. There was no description of the driver or vehicle available. Police were checking surveillance video and his phone to find out more information.
