BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), watched Friday evening an opera of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) which was adapted from the Chinese classic A Dream of Red Mansions.The DPRK Phibada Opera Troupe staged in Beijing the adaptation of the masterpiece by Cao Xueqin, a novelist in the 18th century. SANAA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese medical mission arrived Sunday in the southern Yemeni province of Aden as part of a cooperation agreement between the two countries, state-run Saba news agency reported.The 45-strong mission will provide medical services to residents of the southern provinces of Aden, Lahij, Abyan and Hadramout, according to the report.The mission includes neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons, thoracic surgeons, pediatric surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists and a number of administrative staff, Jamal Khadabish, director of the Aden-based al-Jomhoriya hospital, was quoted by Saba as saying.The mandate of the Chinese mission would last for one year in accordance with a protocol of health cooperation between Yemen and China, Khadabish noted.

BEIJING, June 3 (Xinhua) -- A draft regulation on the protection of water resources and ecological environment of the Taihu Lake, the third largest freshwater lake in China, was made public Wednesday to solicit opinions.According to the draft posted on the website of the State Council's Legislative Affairs Office, www.chinalaw.gov.cn, local authorities must readjust their economic structure and eliminate outdated industries with high water consumption and pollution.Recycled paper-making companies with a yearly output of less than 50,000 tonnes, as well as other pollutant-discharging companies with backward production capacities, and those do not operate in accordance with national industrial policies or meet discharge standards, could no longer operate near the Taihu Lake, the draft said.Taihu has been plagued by algae due to severe industrial pollution in recent years. In 2007, an algae outbreak forced local water plants to stop household water supplies in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province.The draft said local government would set discharge limits and annual pollution reduction plans for all polluters near the lake.Establishment of new chemical and pharmaceutical enterprises and projects, sewage outlets, garbage recycling facilities, golf courses, floating restaurants, poultry and livestock farms should not be allowed near the lake, the draft regulation said.It also banned storage and transportation of toxic materials, and the sales and use of laundry detergent containing phosphorus near the Lake, and demanded limited use of fertilizer and pesticide.Those who violate the draft regulation would face administrative punishment, in addition to fines ranging from 10,000 yuan (1,464 U.S. dollars) to 500,000 yuan or one to three times of the money involved in their illegal activities, and would have to pay for government efforts to undo the damages they have caused, the draft said.The public is invited to comment on the draft regulation any time before June 30 via online postings, email or letters.

BEIJING, April 6 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday again called for more diplomatic efforts to resolve the Iran nuclear issue."We hope all the parties to further enhance diplomatic efforts on the Iran nuclear issue," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told a regular press conference.Jiang said China had maintained close contact with all the relevant parties and hoped all the parties would take more pragmatic and positive measures to properly solve the issue.China has always committed itself to safeguarding the international nuclear non-proliferation regime, the spokesman said.The United States and its western allies have long accused Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons under the guise of a civilian program, and currently they are discussing a United Nations resolution to impose sanctions.Iran has denied the accusation and stressed its nuclear program was solely for peaceful purposes.
