SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A California state audit found that the University of California wrongly admitted at least 64 wealthy students over the past six years as "favors to donors, family, and friends."California State Auditor Elaine Howle also found in the audit released Tuesday that campus staff falsely designated 22 of the applicants as student-athlete recruits because of donations from or as favors to well-connected families.The University of California, Berkeley, admitted 42 less-qualified applicants based on connections to staff, leadership, and donors.The audit was conducted in response to the national college admissions scandal that embroiled prestigious universities around the country, athletic coaches and dozens of wealthy parents. 756

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In the latest call to re-name racially charged brands and logos, nearly 1,000 people have signed an online petition urging Trader Joe's to stop labeling its international food products with ethnic-sounding names.The petition says labeling Chinese, Mexican or Italian food under the labels “Trader Ming's,” “Trader Jose,” or “Trader Giotto's” is racist because it exoticizes other cultures.Petitioners argue the names perpetuate harmful stereotypes."The Trader Joe’s branding is racist because it exoticizes other cultures - it presents 'Joe' as the default 'normal' and the other characters falling outside of it - they are 'Arabian Joe,' 'Trader José,' and 'Trader Joe San.'"In response, the grocery store chain said it decided several years ago to use only the Trader Joe’s name on its products and has been in the process of updating the ethnic-sounding labels.The company said it will soon complete the work. 941

San Diego (KGTV)- As Westin Hotel workers fight for better wages, local business owners are fighting to keep business.Hotel workers have been on strike for the past few weeks. Business owners say customers are now avoiding the area and its costing them money.Joey Aiello owns a shoe shine stand that sits outside of The Westin Hotel. He says he’s seen fewer customers this month because of the strike. “People don’t think its a big business but it supports my family,” says Aiello.He says since the workers hit the picket line, he’s lost 00 in business. “The first week they were here I made less than 0 a day. We have to make 0 a day to stay a float.” Other business also say they are concerned about the noise.The San Diego Police Department says they have received six complaints since October 9th. A spokesperson with Marriott International sent us this statement that says in part:“We are disappointed with some of the tactics the union has deployed including the noise levels. We continue to work with local police to address these issues and we are grateful to our guests for their patience during this time.”The Unite Here Union President, Bridgette Browning, says employees are now in negotiations with the hotel. She also sent us a statement that says:“While we are sympathetic to neighboring businesses - we believe the Marriott has the power to fix this strike and the businesses should be demanding that Marriott do the right thing. The workers are not to blame for the low standards that Marriott has created at the Westin San Diego Gaslamp. The workers are prepared to settle as soon as Marriott decides to do the right thing and sign a contract that provides living wages.”For business owner Joey Aiello, he says he won’t be able to make back the money he’s lost. “I just have to work harder and keep everything a float the best I can.” 1869

San Diego (KGTV)- For many people who live on a fixed income buying groceries may be a challenge. But now, 95,000 San Diegans receiving Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, will be able to apply for the CalFresh program (food stamps). “Individuals receiving SSI receives no more than 0 a month,” says Amanda Schultz Brocheo, with the San Diego Hunger Coalition. “For the majority, of SSI recipients, this all the money they have.”In San Diego, 1 in 11 older adults don’t have enough food to eat. “In some cases, we’ve heard of SSI recipients that will pull out a calendar and circle the days they are going to choose not to eat.”The San Diego Hunger Coalition says they are happy about the expansion but say the amount per day the is less than a day. “We determined that here in San Diego County the average CalFresh allotment is .07 a day.” This week also marks CalFresh Challenge Week. The organization encourages San Diegans to try living off a day for food. It’s meant to bring awareness to the food insecurities around the county. “We know that the CalFresh program is our strongest tool to for fighting hunger and also recognize that the current allotment is fairly small,” says Brocheo. “It makes it fairly difficult for people to live on that amount. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Homeless people in San Diego woke up Tuesday morning to find San Diego Police officers going street by street, offering resources.  Police officers lined the streets of the East Village. They were going street by street approaching the homeless in their tents. At one point there were at least eight patrol cars on one block.  SDPD says their efforts are a part of their ongoing outreach to let the homeless know about the resources available to them in hopes of ending the cycle of homelessness.  Most of the homeless received warnings about their property blocking the street or other violations. A few were detained for previous violations. One person was arrested for an outstanding felony warrant. Two people were transported to county mental health. Officers were also letting people know about the new bathrooms installed by the city in hopes of stopping the spread of Hepatitis A.  965
